Guy lied about which university he went to

We were talking about our backgrounds etc. And he told me he'd been to the 'uni of' of the town, which has a good rep.
I live pretty much next door to that uni so I asked him if he'd lived in halls close by.
He said no he'd lived in an area in the South of the city as his campus was based there.
The area he mentioned is a very nice, affluent neighbourhood and I had a look at the campus.
It turns out the 'uni of' doesn't have a campus there, it's the 'poly' that has a campus there.
I couldn't care less what uni he went to or even if he went to uni, I went to one of these so-called 'lesser' unis for my masters and I think in the grand scheme of things nobody really cares where you went, the right people wouldn't anyway.
However, the lying is a red flag for me. I get it was maybe to try and impress me or that he felt embarrassed, but the lying makes me uncomfortable. Would you say this is a red flag?

God, he needs to run for the hills, you are out of your mind.

Nah he is the liar.

If I’m honest you’re both throwing a few red flags.

Him if he wasn’t being truthful and you for looking it up… honestly that’s a bit creepy if you ask me.

These people are in their twenties. Looking people up is the first thing you do once you've met them - on social media, LinkedIn, Google etc. I'm guessing you are a bit older?

I was doing this when I was dating and I’m 34 and haven’t been single since 2012!

There you go! These days, anyone who doesn't look their potential new partner up online is the odd one, imo.

Reminds me of this 😂

I’d dump him for saying “Uni” instead of “University” to be honest!

I have a friend who seems to be doing this with their son, I wonder if it's the same city. The thing is- the son is completely transparent with people so all it has done is create awkwardness. We have wondered if she actually knows the difference.

Isn’t it entirely possible that she doesn’t? Most people don’t know this stuff unless they have been involved in applications or have been there themselves.

My ex did the same. And then lied about pretty much everything else.

Same here. I wouldn't think anything beyond a quick 😏 in a work or work-related situation, but in a personal situation it's more of a meaningful deception. The ex went on to be deceptive about a great many things.

My degree might not be quite what it says on my CV! But I have always told partners and close friends - I'd expect them to care more about my integrity than my qualifications.

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 11/04/2024 14:58

I wouldn't count upon LinkedIn for 100% accuracy.

Back in 1981/2, I did a one-year industrial training certificate at Preston Polytechnic. Ten years later, Preston Poly became the University of Central Lancashire.

One of my then-classmates proudly claims on her LinkedIn profile to have studied at "Lancaster University", complete with coat-of-arms of the University of Lancaster - not even UCLan! No dates of study given, just the initials of the training body whose certificate we both achieved, and a one-word subject description (a subject which to this very day is not offered as such at the University of Lancaster).

What a pointless, senseless little lie from a woman whose profile clearly shows she has over 40 years' experience in her field to be proud of.

In my field you are required to provide degree certificates for all degrees, and I’m fairly sure there was something I needed to provide a full transcript for.

Ha ha ha. "I lie on my CV, but please care about my integrity!" 😆

Not in my field, obviously!

One of my lecturers did get fired for not having a degree, though ... I imagine they'd verify before hiring these days.

To be fair to her, is it possible that Linked In auto-offered her a pick list when she typed in Lanc… and she mistakenly selected the wrong one?

For ages my profile said I went to a school in NI that had the same name as my actual school. It even had a coat of arms but I just figured it had changed since I was there!

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 11/04/2024 15:34

That's a good point, @TimeandMotion - I hadn't considered it could just be an auto-fill error. Ironic if it is, though, as our course and subsequent line of work included proofreading skills and emphasised the need for accuracy! Grin

This is what it offers. Maybe she was just in a hurry, or mis-picked, or she got mixed up about what your ex-poly had been renamed as?

Guy lied about which university he went to
AreThereSomewhereIslands · 11/04/2024 15:49

...Aaaaaaah, @TimeandMotion - you've solved it! She was of Ghanaian heritage - but she definitely did her certificate at Preston Poly with the rest of us!

LilyPAnderson · 11/04/2024 15:51

I went to the Oxford College of Further Education. Then it changed name to something like Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, but then it changed again to City of Oxford College.
When I fill in my information on websites, sometimes the original name isn't available on the lists, so I've put down all the names on different online forms.

pastypirate · 11/04/2024 15:56

I thought it might be Leicester but I don't think the geography was right.
I had an ex I am pretty sure lies about going to Cambridge because he wa really vague about it. Maybe he did go to the other Cambridge 😂

Anyone who says or mumbles that they went to "Oxford" or "Cambridge", just ask them which college they went to.

If the "Oxford" one says Brookes, then you know 😆

lollymad · 11/04/2024 17:40

Might depend on when too. My degree certificate clearly says 'Uni of...' because although I went to X X University College, my degree was accredited by the main Uni.

gingerninja · 11/04/2024 17:48

Me and my husband tell similar white lies all the time about where we went to Uni (same place) because it routinely scores very very low in league tables and it’s embarrassing. It was a total dump. We’ve obviously never done it when it matters ie for jobs but I think you researching it is more concerning frankly

Talib · 11/04/2024 17:51

many people do this because "Uni people" tend to judge institutions when younger.
When ppl get older they care less.
Sometimes that odd 'oh' from someone is enough for you to not mention the institution again.
I went to a good uni....things happened ended up graduating from a lesser place near where I live , switching to a lesser degree.
The number of ppl who used to give that wry look made me wonder why I should allow them to do it .
So I mention the good uni I left and mention a degree that is better to certain crowds.
I figured out it's just easier
