The heating has been on at home at some point every day for the past 7 months. I’ve no inclination to get out and walk or do anything at all after work. I come home and cook comfort food as there’s sod all else to do. Drying washing everywhere, house always looks untidy.

It’s always cold, dark, rainy, depressing. If we’re lucky we’ll get 2-3 months of a bit of warmth and sunshine before it all starts waning towards winter again.

No wonder there’s lots of bugs and colds around, we’re all indoors all the time! Couple the shitty weather with high costs of living, crap public services and it makes me wonder why I didn't feck off to Australia when I was younger.

No point to this post, just a moan!

It feel it does for a lot of people. I always put on a bit of weight in the winter and then lose it in summer, purely because I'm out walking in the warmer weather. When it's cold and raining I just want to sit under my blanket keeping warm and have no desire to go out!

We've had another day of rain and I'm totally fed up of it too. Going to the lakes tomorrow and the weather forecast is pretty much 80-90% rain all day, not feeling excited to go and can only hope the forecast is wrong 😔

I live in the lakes and popped in to the yha in hawkshead today…. I was feeling shit myself about the weather, but felt so sorry for those in there who were camping or in yurts hiding away in the lounge area

I’m totally sick of this rain!! No free park or nice walks so having to pay loads for indoor activities.

Yes I could walk in the pouring rain however then I have to dry all my clothes, all my DD’s, wash the dog & the clean up takes longer than the miserable walk🤣

Cat cant/won’t go out so she’s scratching the carpet.

Mostly though, my hair only has to smell moisture & I can scare kids from 30m. Looks like 20 backcombed brillo pads😩

😂😂😂😂

Curlewwoohoo · 08/04/2024 20:58

El Nino, isn't it. Might last a few more years, unfortunately. The parks here have flooded at least once a month for the last 7 months.

User135644 · 08/04/2024 20:58

I usually like spring weather but it's still grey, wet and miserable.

It's not cold though, it's stuffy weather.

Oh for a few months of early-mid 20s temps with blue skies and a gentle breeze. We'll soon be moaning about hot and sticky weather in the 30s though come summer and you do less exercise then.

Hibye23289 · 08/04/2024 21:01

OP I get you, when it's sunny I feel so motivated and want to head straight out in it and make the most of it and it is free but when it's grey and miserable with no nice bkue skies or views to look at and the clothes and shoes covered in mud then no! I have decided I prefer Spring over Summer now because we tend to get better weather, although it is obvs dodgy at the minute. August has rained for the last few years from what I can remember and then yes it us back to Winter again and 'Pumpkin Spice Latte's' 🙄

Nothing that decent appropriate clothing wouldn't fix though either

40 mph winds, gusts of 50mph, off and on showers (so you have to cover up) and warm temperatures (so you stew in your waterproofs. No amount of "appropriate clothing" will

  • make anyone enjoy this weather
  • dry the swamps local parks, my garden, local paths
  • sort out the local rugby and football pitches so matches don't have to be cancelled every other week due to standing water
  • make my laundry dry faster

I don't drive and I am out in all weathers. There is nothing enjoyable or virtuous about soaking clothes or destroyed umbrellas.

I agree! I wear a £400 paramo jacket. I’m warm… if a bit toasty! But still miserable.

I can’t talk to dh properly because we both have hoods up constantly

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 08/04/2024 21:02

@Misthios @Hedjwitch another Scot here and last June was lovely but feels like another lifetime ago now. I'm further north and it's been brass monkey Baltic since early September, with rain for weeks and weeks now. Our river is so high it's regularly flooding across the road. Fields are under water, everywhere is sodden, paths are treacherous. I have all the appropriate weather clothing you could ever need and it's still fucking miserable to go out.

Caerulea · 08/04/2024 21:05

For some people this relentless windy, grey & damp (I'm in the SW & it's been MONTHS) is a real mental health issue.

I don't know what all the smug 'well it's fine for me' is all about. Good for you! That's great. Really pleased you're not affected. It isn't necessarily about 'getting out' it is a lack of sunlight & it affects a lot of people to the point it increases suicide rates. There are mountain-shadowed villages that literally get spots of light reflected into them via heliostats perched up high.

So rather than sneer at those struggling, try just a little bit of empathy.

TheGreenManalishiWithTheTwoProngedCrown · 08/04/2024 21:05

I can’t imagine how people with horses haven’t given up keeping them en masse.

Even the horses were looking fed up on my drive to work this morning.

QueenMegan · 08/04/2024 21:06

It's quite nice here. I like rain and mud I'm weird

Oh my god it’s just a bit of rain, honestly you’d think people have never seen a British spring before.

Nobody alive in this country has ever seen a Spring like this before. HTH.

England drenched after the wettest 18 months since records began in 1836

Warmer atmosphere will continue to hold more moisture and contribute to rainfall, scientists say

Wellhellooooodear · 08/04/2024 21:17

It really us depressing but I've been forcing myself to go for a walk after work every evening evening if it's pissing down as I do feel better for it. I also plan on slapping on some fake tan at the weekend!

HellsBells67 · 08/04/2024 21:17

West of Scotland coastal here and it is just non stop bloody rain and grey skies. I have never suffered from SAD but am teetering on the brink here now. Had a week in the sun last month, feels like years ago already.

GingerPirate · 08/04/2024 21:18

Hm.
I'm not ill or fat, so far.
But I agree wholeheartedly, OP.
Hate rain, damp, mud and water on spectacles.
Oh and there were at some point in the morning
five little snails attached to my bedroom window
(outside).
😁

My allotment has been underwater for large stretches of the past seven months.

Should have planted rice.

Oh! This made me laugh, thank you (I haven’t been to my allotment since Christmas , 😬)

Life is what you make of it and you make your own choices.

The weather may have been shite but we have still had loads of fun!

You only get one shot at life... it's short and precious.

You are definitely exaggerating 🤣
(unless you’re in Scotland or somewhere I suppose, I don’t know what the weather was like there).

Umm yes I am in 'Scotland or somewhere', there are 5 million of us, believe it or not some of us even have internet now. I'm truly not exaggerating, you can see from the other Scots on the thread (hello! Great to finally have dial-up eh?).

mjf981 · 08/04/2024 21:23

Move to Sydney 😀 (to be fair we just had 2 days of torrential rain, but 90% of the time it’s great)!

Sick of this fucking weather. No wonder we are all ill and fat.
Isitautumnyet23 · 08/04/2024 21:23

OP, it is totally ok to moan and not criticising you at all for that. Last week actually turned out much better than expected in the SW - everywhere was packed when the sun shone, people enjoying every rain free day, it was so nice to see. I think with this weather, you just have to get out when you can. Get a really accurate weather app and walk when you know rain is unlikely.

Do you do an exercise class/swim? Would you feel motivated going with a friend to something once a week indoors for the winter months? Gym, swim followed by a jacuzzi somewhere? Im not a gym person at all (prefer walking) but that would still appeal to me in the winter.

Junk food does make you feel rubbish but we all eat it. Can you treat yourself at the weekend to yummy food/alcohol and limit in the week?

Just suggesting ideas that could help but I think its ok to whinge after a very long winter!

I completely agree with all of this, OP @Wayofliving

Absolutely miserable 😭 everything seems to be getting worse here. I wish I’d relocated to America in my early 30s and still considering it. I have a friend who relocated to Florida from Sweden and I’ve had to mute her on social media as I’m jealous seeing her pictures 😂 obviously the US has its own issues but I just mean in terms of getting proper sunshine it would be better ☀️ I used to live near NYC and even when it got cold there would still be more blue skies and sun than here where it’s just this wall of grey sky for months on end.

I’m off to SE Asia for ten days at the end of this month and I’m looking forward to wandering about each day for hours in the sunshine and being active and eating smoothies and fresh noodle dishes!

I have dark skin and I believe the lack of vit D is especially detrimental to me So I take high strength vit D pills now . But I’ll be soaking it up on holiday. I’m seriously considering moving for good next year though as November-February is tough for me here.

alwaysmovingforwards · 08/04/2024 21:24

Speak for yourself by all means. But staying indoors eating comfort food is a choice.
