The heating has been on at home at some point every day for the past 7 months. I’ve no inclination to get out and walk or do anything at all after work. I come home and cook comfort food as there’s sod all else to do. Drying washing everywhere, house always looks untidy.

It’s always cold, dark, rainy, depressing. If we’re lucky we’ll get 2-3 months of a bit of warmth and sunshine before it all starts waning towards winter again.

No wonder there’s lots of bugs and colds around, we’re all indoors all the time! Couple the shitty weather with high costs of living, crap public services and it makes me wonder why I didn't feck off to Australia when I was younger.

No point to this post, just a moan!

I live in the warmest driest part of the south east so I think it’s easy for some people to forget or not be aware of what it’s like in other parts of the U.K.

BezMills · 10/04/2024 07:56

Where I live we have one of the best climates in the UK and the weather has been filthy here since September. I can only imagine it's even worse everywhere else.

Tessisme · 10/04/2024 07:57

Raining in Belfast again. Not quite as windy, so at least that's something. We're having carpet fitted and had to clear three rooms. A hundred trips up and down to the shed with DS1's Lego and our garden is a muddy mess. Expecting Shrek to stride past the window any time.

Tessisme · 10/04/2024 07:58

At least the trips to the shed have burned a few calories🤣🤣

They happen quite often here. They just aren't as big as they are elsewhere.

I stand corrected on when a tornado hits the UK.

However, In my 42 years never been an issue to me or anyone I know. So I don’t think I need to worry about them as that poster suggested I should.

When was the last time a tornado hit the UK?

There was one in Manchester a couple of days before Christmas.

Agree.

Not sure if where we live in Oxfordshire is the warmest and driest but from many of the posts, we have been very lucky. DH has been talking to his mum who is in the NE and knows the weather is usually worse there. I’ll be honest, I’m hoping he keeps it in mind every time he thinks and talks about moving up there and what the reality would be for us and how badly affected he and DS1 would be. He runs 4 days a week and has been able to get out and do so even with it being windy. Can’t recall the last time I didn’t see a runner outside my window most of the Easter break. He would struggle massively if we lived where his parents and other posters have said they live. DS1 is autistic and has to go out at least once every day otherwise it is a day full of tantrums and meltdowns.

I grew up with extreme weather, low and high temps for days on end, flooding, etc so can easily cope. However, I would struggle to cope with days of restlessness of DH and DS1 because they can’t go outside.

Laughing at the talk about tornados in the UK.
Some MN really are dramatic 😂

I dont think people are saying we should worry ourselves to death about them, just that it's completely understandable why people are fed up with this kind of weather. Who actually enjoys a tornado?- even a small one. I dont- I get concerned about our roof and fencing coming down and having the expense of having to replace it.

I can't say I losse any sleep worrying about them, just thought it was an interesting fact.

peloton2024 · 10/04/2024 08:34

I wasn't saying I was worrying about them but there was a tornado in my area in December so when you read "there's no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing"
It's a bit... yeah ok because there is obviously such a thing as bad weather

Menora · 10/04/2024 08:54

@phoenixrosehere I live between south east and east anglia we do not get as much rain as everyone else. I believe it is literally half. We get good temps too. I have always been shocked when I have driven up north from a warm sunny east anglia and seen it get more and more overcast the further I drive. I think I would find it hard to live in those areas so I do feel for people who do

AnTeallach · 10/04/2024 09:08

It's official - Edinburgh has now already had 200% of the average April rainfall, and its only the 10th, fgs! There's more (lots more) forecast today. I feel justified in being sick of this!!

However, for those saying they haven't been able to go out for weeks, or can't move north because of the weather, give me a break! Most of the rain is torrential and there are breaks in it, if you actually want to go out. Timing is all, though I appreciate not so easy to work around for those with FT jobs, wheelchairs and/or caring responsibilities.

But OMG, roll on blue skies, sunshine and warmer temperatures. It's currently 7c and no, my heating's not yet off.

mellongoose · 10/04/2024 09:11

I think the real issue is for farmers and fishermen.

Farmers can't plant/grow because the ground is sodden. Fishermen can't get out because of the constant winds.

We are going to be in real trouble with our food production this year I fear.

Well no, it isn't bliss.
Will you be on the summer haters thread if and when we get some warm weather?

I'm a big fan of walking in all uk weathers.

Allfur · 10/04/2024 09:20

SabreIsMyFave · 09/04/2024 22:59

It's just the 'just move abroad' thing that jarred me. Because the vast majority of people cannot do that. And most don't WANT to .. The UK weather has been shit for MONTHS, but I still wouldn't live anywhere else. Nope.

So what's the point of moaning about it then

Allfur · 10/04/2024 09:24

AtomicBlondeRose · 10/04/2024 06:53

I love the classic Mumsnet cognitive dissonance of insisting that a walk in the pouring rain is pure joy, while admitting in the same sentence it’s because there’s nobody else outside.

If something is fun, free and generally nice to do it is usually very popular (hence the traffic at Dovedale on a sunny day), so if nobody else wants to do something, surely that’s a very good sign that it’s actually a bit shit?

The traffic doesn't help climate change, maybe we need to be less reliant on cars

It's fine and cathartic to just have a moan, there doesn't need to be a point to it.

I'm sure if you had had suitable footwear, a proper coat and a positive attitude it would barely be noticeable! 🙄

Jovacknockowitch · 10/04/2024 09:27

errghh I am so sick of toxic positivity.

We had a rare dry day yesterday but it’s back to raining today and obviously rained last night as the ground was wet early this morning.
