Sick of this fucking weather. No wonder we are all ill and fat.

The heating has been on at home at some point every day for the past 7 months. I’ve no inclination to get out and walk or do anything at all after work. I come home and cook comfort food as there’s sod all else to do. Drying washing everywhere, house always looks untidy.

It’s always cold, dark, rainy, depressing. If we’re lucky we’ll get 2-3 months of a bit of warmth and sunshine before it all starts waning towards winter again.

No wonder there’s lots of bugs and colds around, we’re all indoors all the time! Couple the shitty weather with high costs of living, crap public services and it makes me wonder why I didn't feck off to Australia when I was younger.

No point to this post, just a moan!

It's the dankness and cold and lack of sunlight, of course it's depressing.

The birds don't thrive in poor springs either, rubbish Aprils and Mays wipe many chicks out. Horrible for everyone.

BrendaSmall · 09/04/2024 16:04

It’s wet but not cold!
were in the south west and not had heating on that much over the winter, not had it on at all since beginning of March, when the sun shins it’s starting to warm up, at least in between showers I can get the washing out on the line and dry it

Whinge · 09/04/2024 16:08

It’s wet but not cold!

Surely that depends on where you are. Confused

It might not be cold in the SW, but where I am it's currently blowing a gale and chucking it down. I'm wearing a jumper and wondering if I should put the heating on.

Here's your sticker, well done you.

What do I need a sticker for, when I have my health and vitality, just saying we're not all sedentary weather haters

Howyoualldoworkme · 09/04/2024 16:17

I'm on the South Coast and it's been shite for months. And today it's even more shite and there's floods everywhere.
I really want to wear my nice dresses, dry my washing in a sunny breeze and just feel warm.
I've got suitable clothing and shoes, I'm just sick of wearing them

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/04/2024 16:19

Yeah that's me
sedentary weather hater
forgot it's not just puddle suit wankers on here

You have obviously never been in a caravan in the rain in Wales. Fun active things' whatever the weather? What on earth are they, without paying squillions for indoor play or dragging cold, fed up kids (yes I know about appropriate clothes, thanks) around in the rain and the mud?

Kids often take their cues from the adults! Generally we find that if we’re upbeat and positive about an activity then they will be too.

Right! I'm in the SW (where it is generally windy and rainy but not cold at the moment) but manage to understand that's not indicative of the entire country.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/04/2024 16:25

I'm positively upbeat that this weather is beyond shite
Ahhh
that's better

Sure, plenty of children enjoy being outside. But no amount of cajoling and cheery encouragement from an adult is going to make being outside in the freezing rain a more enjoyable experience than soft play or other indoor activities.

RampantIvy · 09/04/2024 16:29

I guess when the summer haters start their moaning, we can tell them that there is no such thing as bad weather and they just have an attitude and clothes problem.

The irony is that a lot of summer haters won't wear summer clothes and still insist on wearing skinny jeans and jumpers in the mistaken beilief that summer clothes make them look fatter.

No they don't. If you are slim you look slim in what ever you are wearing and if you are more curvy than you would like to be, wearing a jumper won't hide your curves, so you might as well wear a loose linen shirt and loose cotton trousers and be comfortable.

God the "just put on waterproofs and Get Out There" brigade are insufferable.

Aren't they just.

Anyone trying to say walking in the wet with the right clothes on is anywhere near as nice as a warm, dry, clear walk is having a laugh. It's just not

I agree.

My car was giving me an ice warning this morning as it was 3 degrees. I'm in the SE

Hippobot · 09/04/2024 16:30

Totally agree OP. It's bloody miserable. We've had 2 half decent days since October. I don't recall a winter being this wet, and for so long, ever. The storms we are getting are far more frequent and worse than anything we've ever had before. There's hardly a tree left standing where I live. The fields cannot drain away the volume of rainwater that keeps on falling so the roads are permanently flooded and fields have turned into muddy lakes. Can't get any gardening started. It's meant to be spring! If this is how it's always going to be now (or worse) with climate change then it's a bleak prospect. I just keep telling myself that climate change for other people will mean drought, famine, sea levels engulfing their homes and unsurvivable temperatures...that helps to make me grateful to live somewhere where I won't burn to death or die of thirst or end up under sea level. It does not, however, combat the symptoms of SAD from this endless winter.

If it makes you feel any better, my ex-sister-in-law lives in Queensland, Australia, and is absolutely fed up with the cyclones, monsoon rains and flooding they've had there. The government have been warning people to check their gardens for snakes sheltering from the floods and crocs that have come out of the rivers with the flood waters. Then there's the 49°C temperatures.

guineapigthyme · 09/04/2024 16:42

It's the bloody wind for me! I've had my shed and fence blown down already this year and I'm worried about my roof as it's not in the best condition. I get a bit worried whenever it's windy.

The wind rips right through my house and makes it chilly (not really sure why it happens but there is obviously a gap somewhere as my understairs cupboard sometimes blow open!)

It always seems to coincide with recycling night too, so I either have to hang on to my 26 different coloured recycling tubs full of rubbish for another week, or put them out and have to go and pick up rubbish from up and down the street the next day. The bin men do a good job but don't seem to have a set route as they can turn up any time between 5am and 5pm so it's not as simple as putting the rubbish out at the last minute.

If I didn't have a job and a pet I'd be off to Tenerife ASAP! I might check out some holidays anyway on the off chance I can nab some last minute annual leave and find someone to watch the guinea pigs!

That's fine, I like grumpy people. Relentlessly positive people do my nut in.

Yes agree. Strangely, they are rarely the most interesting or fun people to be around!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/04/2024 16:47

See I'm just back from a week in the sun.
my mood and energy levels improved.
my joints stopped aching
I slept better
i love being out doors.
The way the dark wet months sap my energy and mood and resilience is something that is getting worse as I get older.
My menopausal anxiety has never been worse than this winter as the Best therapy for it is being outside and being active
But hey we're just grumpy and lazy and need to embrace those puddles and adopt a positive mental attitude

It was always one of my top requirements in a man. I used to have a boyfriend who was all bouncy and positive about EVERYTHING. It was like going out with a labrador. My darling DH is a relentless curmudgeon and I hope he never changes.

If it makes you feel any better I’m a gardener and also been perpetually ill this year. It’s been a bad winter for bugs!

But you really should go outside. Even if it’s undercover just to get fresh air. The headaches and grogginess I get if I don’t go out every hour or so is unreal. We are designed to be outside. Cold or warm. Luckily at home I have a porch and just sit there for a cuppa and mumsnet for 10 mins every few hours. Currently there. It’s spitting and cold. But my head feels clear, my eyes have remoisturised.

Try it out.

We are designed to be outside

What exactly do you mean by this?

Since humans existed, they have sought shelter. Housing is a basic human standard that we expect for citizens. We are not animals who can easily survive life outside. We need protection from the elements. Yes fresh air is good and some daylight is useful for vitamin D production. But overall we are better designed to be inside.

The best people have some healthy cynicism and a dark sense of humour. Those who skip through life merrily spreading their one-dimensional positivity bore me senseless.
