Sick of this fucking weather. No wonder we are all ill and fat.

The heating has been on at home at some point every day for the past 7 months. I’ve no inclination to get out and walk or do anything at all after work. I come home and cook comfort food as there’s sod all else to do. Drying washing everywhere, house always looks untidy.

It’s always cold, dark, rainy, depressing. If we’re lucky we’ll get 2-3 months of a bit of warmth and sunshine before it all starts waning towards winter again.

No wonder there’s lots of bugs and colds around, we’re all indoors all the time! Couple the shitty weather with high costs of living, crap public services and it makes me wonder why I didn't feck off to Australia when I was younger.

No point to this post, just a moan!

I am not spending 10 minutes on my doorstep every hour. Its blowing a gale outside at the moment. It is not pleasant weather.
And what really gets me is the mud. There are so many walks I can not do at the moment as they are just a sea of mud. A local walking group I planned to go out with at the weekend cancelled their walk as the fields were just too muddy to safely walk across. Even paved paths often have large flooded puddles to navigate.
It is not that it is raining that is the issue. It is that it has gone on so long and the conditions that creates.
It has been the wettest 18 months since 1836.

England drenched after the wettest 18 months since records began in 1836

Warmer atmosphere will continue to hold more moisture and contribute to rainfall, scientists say

If it makes you feel any better I’m a gardener and also been perpetually ill this year. It’s been a bad winter for bugs!

But you really should go outside. Even if it’s undercover just to get fresh air. The headaches and grogginess I get if I don’t go out every hour or so is unreal. We are designed to be outside. Cold or warm. Luckily at home I have a porch and just sit there for a cuppa and mumsnet for 10 mins every few hours. Currently there. It’s spitting and cold. But my head feels clear, my eyes have remoisturised.

Try it out.

It's feckin pouring and the wind is howling, I can absolutely guarantee that I would NOT feel better if I just 'tried sitting out' 😳

NoisySnail · 09/04/2024 13:12

Going out earlier just to empty the bin was bad enough!

NoisySnail · 09/04/2024 13:13

I just assume those saying just to get a decent coat are living in parts of the UK with better weather.

I just sat outside in the howling wind for 10 minutes, as suggested by that poster, and was a) cold and b) miserable.

Fizbosshoes · 09/04/2024 13:19

Most of us are in the uk and are generally prepared for some rainy windy weather this time of year. Of course you can go for a walk in the rain and take kids out in the rain. Sometimes it's a novelty to put wellies on and jump in the mud....except its really not when that's been the only "going out" option for months!

But it gets tedious when almost every day is wet and windy. For people taking time off in school holidays, if anything like me when my kids were young, you might bank on a few nice days to do outdoor stuff/maybe free activities and then go to a museum or indoor place on rainy days.
And yes it doesn't rain all day every day but most people are either restricted by work/pets/children or other caring responsibilities that it's not always a choice what time to go out and take advantage of the 45 min of dry weather between 4.50pm and 5.35pm!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/04/2024 13:20

I walk to and from work every day.
In the last 6 months I can count barely a dozen walks that have been done in the dry.
i have good shoes and a coat.
i cannot drive there due to parking issues.
i most days have to take a full change of clothes with me.
Over the winter months I got to work and it was still dark and it was already dark when I left again.
i walk, run and garden in the rain.
And I've Had a guts full of this shit weather.
And no I'm not going to wear a fucking puddlesuit.
Struggling with this weather isn't because we're doing it wrong.
Its because it's shit

Rain and cold shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the outdoors entirely, although I get that it’s not very cheering. My favourite season has recently switched from summer to spring, despite the weather I’m really enjoying seeing all of the changes in the enviroment.

It took me 25 years to realise LAYERS keep you warm. You need to be trapping layers of warm air against your body. I could never find a coat warm enough to be comfortable outside. You want tights under leggings under trousers, T-shirt under light cardi under sweatshirt. 2 pairs of socks. Big scarf or shawl up top (never understood scarfs, it’s blocking cold air coming down the neck of the cold) and a hat, hood up.

I know that’s depressing for April, but experiment with combinations. It’s crazy how much warmer it is than a big coat alone.

cliovillee · 09/04/2024 13:24

Also I love the base assumption that everyone can drive. Plenty of us can't. I would love to just hop in the car and drive to soft play but I can't do that - if I want to go to soft play I have to walk 20 minutes to a bus stop, in the rain and wind, where I then wait, in the rain and wind, until the bus decides to show up, then walk for 20 minutes the other end, then do it all again in reverse.

I don't think my manager will be too happy if I ask to go outside every few hours Grin
I do open windows, it's not a sealed unit I'm sat in at home

alwaysrootingfortheantihero · 09/04/2024 13:35

You only have to look at the Met Office data to see that some of the UK has had relentless rain since July - with the exception of September, large parts of Western and Northern UK have had measurable rainfall (>0.2mm) more than 25 days EVERY month.

Just because you live in a drier area doesn't mean it's not bloody grim for people that don't.

I don't even live within the worst parts and know that we haven't had more than 24 hours without rain here since February.

It's relentless and yes there has been the odd dry morning/afternoon here and there but the forecasts are often so wildly wrong, it's impossible to plan. Plus everything is just so soggy...

NoisySnail · 09/04/2024 13:42

My friend started keeping track of dry days and says we have had 2 dry days in the last six weeks. That is a lot of rain. And nearly every day there is lots of rain. Not just one quick shower, but rain throughout the day.

Clarencefloss · 09/04/2024 13:46

Im sick of it too. So done with this rain it’s utterly depressing

Clarencefloss · 09/04/2024 13:47

Agreed it’s utterly depressing

TonTonMacoute · 09/04/2024 13:50

I live in the countryside and have racks of weatherproof clothing and boots. Here in Cornwall we are used to rain, god knows, but I've never experienced anything like this year.

Today is at least sunny but it's very very windy. I do go out in potter in the garden most days but it's so waterlogged I can't do a lot of the stuff that needs doing. I am utterly, utterly fed up now

Thegreatgiginthesky · 09/04/2024 13:54

Chypre · 08/04/2024 18:47

Where I live in the south west it's windy (WINDY!!!!) more than anything, rain never sticks for long, we always get bits of blue sky and sunshine throughout the day. But this year so far never long enough to get the washing out, that's true. Maybe it has to do with El Niño/La Niña cycles.

Get the octopus energy tracker tariff. I love the wind now because on windy days my electricity costs go down to 11p / Kwh!

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/04/2024 13:55

Today the wind, combined with high tides has meant that the river has broken its banks in various places.

Like everyone else, I’m thoroughly sick of it.

Plumeface · 09/04/2024 13:55

1.54 in Bristol and I've actually got the washing out. Send my 8 year old for a run around the garden and he came back in 2 minutes later complaining it was too cold and windy but never mind, a win is a win.

TheSilenceofTheMajority · 09/04/2024 14:00

Cue all the jolly middle class people coming along to tell you to put on an extra jumper and splash in some muddy puddles, but I’m with you OP - it is shit, and bloody depressing. I’ve had enough of it, want to feel the sun on my skin.

At least three posters saying that, including myself, are in Scotland where it’s colder throughout the year and rains more! Maybe we’re more used to it 🙈😂

BatchIt · 09/04/2024 14:02

I just went out with the dogs in my “proper” outdoor gear and really tried to look on the bright side. The only moment of enjoyment I got was when the horizontal freezing rain stopped chapping my left cheek when I turned around to come home, and started painfully battering my right cheek instead.

And I’d waited 3 hours for a gap in the weather, which lasted exactly 10 minutes…

Stop with the "jolly middle class" bollocks. It's nonsense.

piscofrisco · 09/04/2024 14:08

I just tried to go for a walk at lunch time. My only available time for exercise this week is during my lunch breaks. Freezing wind and sideways rain. On the basis that I've got meetings all afternoon that I can't really look windswept for I had to give up. Fucking weather.
