Sick of this fucking weather. No wonder we are all ill and fat.

The heating has been on at home at some point every day for the past 7 months. I’ve no inclination to get out and walk or do anything at all after work. I come home and cook comfort food as there’s sod all else to do. Drying washing everywhere, house always looks untidy.

It’s always cold, dark, rainy, depressing. If we’re lucky we’ll get 2-3 months of a bit of warmth and sunshine before it all starts waning towards winter again.

No wonder there’s lots of bugs and colds around, we’re all indoors all the time! Couple the shitty weather with high costs of living, crap public services and it makes me wonder why I didn't feck off to Australia when I was younger.

No point to this post, just a moan!

While the constant wet is depressing and tiresome, I do not agree it should prevent you getting out if you're walking or exercising. I train with my running group a few times a week all weathers and all year round. It is much harder in the rain and mud to psych myself up to go, but at the end of the day our skins are waterproof, and the hot shower when back feels great!

Have you seen the price of food there? Those fuckers can't afford to eat. It's nothing like the fucking shop!

I understand where you're coming from OP. I hate grey and murky British winters and spring this year is not my idea of how spring should be.

I'm lucky. I'm retired so can pick the best part of the day to get out and most days have managed to miss the rain or at least get out when it's only drizzle. Even so, I've only been walking around my local streets as footpaths anywhere else are far too muddy to be enjoyable. I'm also very lucky in that I've been able to spend a couple of weeks in Spain in February. I've aimed to do that for a while and it does get me through winter. Without that I'd probably be pulling my hair out by now.

It is far, far worse for people with small children or if you are working and unable to choose the times of the day to get out. And also for those who live in a part of the country where they more commonly get poor weather . It must be really frustrating to be told how nice the weather is in London/SE.

Jovacknockowitch · 09/04/2024 10:51

I am normally the cheery git who comes on and says the UK weather is lovely etc, but this year is getting beyond a joke for rain. As a PP mentioned, the relentless nature of it has rendered many of my regular dog walks a quagmire with major trip (slip) hazards.

I don't like it stupidly hot though so will moan if it gets above the high 20s

Haydenn · 09/04/2024 10:52

People in this country are ill and fat regardless of the weather. Yes it’s tiresome at the moment, but I don’t think the state of the nation improves markedly after a good summer.

Lovemusic82 · 09/04/2024 10:54

The rain and wind is tedious but I still walk in it, though at the moment I’m recovering from surgery and can’t go walking, in a way it’s been nice that the weather hasn’t been great so I haven’t missed much. I was going to venture out today but it’s so windy out. It does look like the end of the week maybe a bit better.

alloalloallo · 09/04/2024 10:54

It’s pissing down with rain again and we’ve got a yellow weather warning for wind here today.

I live in a holiday area and it’s been a washout for
months. So many events were cancelled due to the weather last summer - huge events that are small local businesses main source of income during the year. The firework event that is a local charity’s main source of income was cancelled, and then the rearranged event was cancelled due to the weather.

I’d usually be thinking about chucking my horses out-out about now, but until the ducks have moved out of the pond that has appeared in their field and it’s dried up a bit, they’re still in at night. Farmers are struggling, we’ve had major flooding and massive land slips. It has been that bad.

I’m still out and about loads. I have horses and a springer spaniel and, believe me, I have a vast array of appropriate clothing and boots. I could open a shop, but they’re just clothes, they’re not some kind of magic shield, it’s still bloody miserable. Standing in a field trying not to be killed by a horse that’s off its tits due to the wind up its arse while up to your knees in mud is not fun.

Chypre · 08/04/2024 18:47

Where I live in the south west it's windy (WINDY!!!!) more than anything, rain never sticks for long, we always get bits of blue sky and sunshine throughout the day. But this year so far never long enough to get the washing out, that's true. Maybe it has to do with El Niño/La Niña cycles.

Yes partly the El Niño that we are slowly phasing out of. But also partly a climate change issue- warmer air holds more moisture, so warmer winters tend to mean wetter winters. I’ll need to double check but I have in my head that for every degree warmer, 7% more water vapour is held in the air….

its gross outside. The constant wind and rain makes it difficult to do anything- my garden is a wet swamp, the horses are depressed with hardly any time out in the fields. The kids aren’t playing out as much as the lawn is sodden and muddy from the dog. Even the chickens have stopped laying 😂

TotoroElla · 09/04/2024 11:02

I live in the South East so we get lots of warm weather. Not had the heating on atall in March. Lots of nice sunny weather. But still so much going around! I have just caught Whooping cough!

Sometimes we have to do the opposite of what we feel like. You could do some exercise indoors if you don't want to go outside - gym, tennis, badminton, swimming? Maybe join a nice gym with a spa too so it feels like a treat.

susansaucepan · 09/04/2024 10:36

My Solutions :

  1. I got a tumble dryer . No more wet clothes everywhere and no mould and mildew .

  2. Got a nice warm coat , not a flimsy fashion coat . This included trading my pretty wool peacoats for long sensible rain proof coats with hoods and zips .

  3. Got decent leather boots so that my feet are toasty all year round and I don't have to walk around in soggy trainers . Avoid suede boots they are a nightmare to keep clean in the rain .

  4. don't worry about going out everyday, we have indoor days , shopping mall days , soft play / trampoline centre days . But atleast couple times a week we go out in nature to local parks , nature parks , woods etc

  5. if need be just drive everywhere but anything is better than being stuck indoors by yourself or with young kids.

@susansaucepan

i want to wear a flimsy fashion coat though

im sick of wearing the same stuff over and over

Realduchymarmalade · 09/04/2024 11:04

I think this is one of those threads where people’s answers are very regional.
West Wales here, high on a lone hill, and I don’t mind rain and have become used to being outside regardless. But I agree with you OP, the sheer volume of rain and wind here has felt almost biblical in the sense I keep thinking of Noah and his family in the ark as our house has been constantly thrashed by rain and high winds. While the world beyond is lost in fog and mist. What I find makes a difference is that as soon as the sun peeks out from the thick grey covering on gloom, you must drop everything and go out. And I say that as someone drowning in babies, toddlers, older children and animals.. it’s not always easy but when the sun comes out even for a little where, I try to get myself as as many of the household as I can - out into the garden or out for a brisk walk. It makes a difference.

Quite!! And I bloody hate boots as well. I want to wear my converse.

Menomeno · 09/04/2024 11:05

I have mobility problems and I can’t walk wearing heavy clothing or footwear. I do get out for walks when it’s dry (walking is the only exercise I can manage), but I wouldn’t get to the end of the street if I were rigged up like a North Sea fisherman in heavy boots.

Vcal2017 · 09/04/2024 11:06

I’m in Australia, and it’s raining here too. Days of constant low level drizzle that makes roads and paths dangerous.

Totally agree! It has been shite in London!

I don't just mean a bit of rain here and there - it has been dark and gloomy and a bit like living at the bottom of a well. Everything sodden.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/04/2024 11:09

But atleast couple times a week we go out in nature to local parks , nature parks , woods etc

If you are going into the woods then we are not talking about the same sort of weather. You can't go into the woods near me because after six months of rain the forest floor has turned into deep mulch. Trees are falling over because there is nothing solid for their roots to grip. And this is in the SE.

edgeware · 09/04/2024 11:10

I’m sure I read am article last week that this is the rainiest year (so far) for 105 years.

Augustus40 · 09/04/2024 11:12

I do agree the weather is awful in this country. Luckily I live in the middle of the country so not full north. There is lovely signs of spring coming now. Daylight hours are longer which brings fresh hope.

Just hope and pray we get a half decent summer this year unlike last summer which was utter pants though!

BezMills · 09/04/2024 11:13

YADNBU this weather can get in the bin.

Two mostly sunny days then we've just had record-breaking tide driven by the storm winds, flooding out half our town. I need two calm dry days to fix a Velux window in my house, god knows when I might get that.

Fuck off with the mad weather, please thanks

A field near us has been waterlogged since before Christmas. It now looks like a salt marsh / shallow lake, and in the last few weeks has had seagulls swimming in it.

We have an actual flock (if that’s the correct word) of swans on one near me!

GoodnightAdeline · 09/04/2024 11:14

Raining again here.

I (honestly) think we have had 2 days here where it hasn’t rained since January.

You can go to places with managed paths, there are a lot near us. Anywhere a bit more off-piste is like the Somme.

DivergentTris · 09/04/2024 11:16

The only thing I hate about this weather is the whining about it. I mean it's not ideal weather, but for Pete's sake get over it and get on with it.
My husband constantly whins about the poxy weather and I ignore him until he changes the subject.
There's enough stuff that bothers me in life that I can work towards changing for the better without whining about something like the weather that I can't do anything about. Its such a waste of energy and headspace.

I’m sure I read am article last week that this is the rainiest year (so far) for 105 years.

It's also been the warmest winter on record worldwide, and I reckon it was unseasonably warm in the UK too:

I've only skimmed a few replies but I'm struggling to understand why more people don't appreciate a lot of this is due to serious climate change, it's not just a bit of an inconvenience! Years ago snow at Easter wasn't unusual.
