Obvs name changed for this one!

I have come to Butins Skegness as a family and our fairground apartment is FILTHY! there is mould on the ceiling above the kids bed and round the kitchen window, poo on the bathroom door, blood on the curtains, sauce all over the microwave, brown ick all over the kettle, the floors haven't been swept or hovered and there's hair and blood on the master bed! Is this the standard I expect here? I'm just about ready to pack up and head home! They have offered us another apartment but I have to take all the stuff down 2 flights of stairs rather back up another 2 flights! Ita also eaten.the first couple of hours of our holiday and really taken the shine off.

AIBU is this what you expect when you pay to come to butlins?

I haven't heard anything good about pontins!

To be fair, I don’t even know if it’s still going as a business! I kinda hope not 🤣

Glad they moved you.
That's grim even by skeggy's very low standards.

When I went as a kid the chalets didn't even have bathrooms. You used the showers at the end of each block.
I bloody loved it.

My mum - not so much 🤣

That's camping! I love camping BTW

A friend went a couple of years ago and her reports were that tge place needed to be ripped down. There was mouse poo and holes in the walls!

Having a little Google 4 of them shut with no notice last November!

My dd’s most memorable trip to butlins skegness was when a woman have birth in the pool. Well, not in the water. That got her out before that bit.

op, ask them to provide early access queue jump passes in the package of making up for the crapness.

No. We're talking 40, 45 years ago and the basic cheap chalets didn't have bathrooms. You had to use communal showers that were at the end of each block of chalets.

I loved it. It was the most exciting part of the holiday

I was a weird kid.

EllaPaella · 08/04/2024 22:13

We went there in 2014 and will never go again. Minging doesn't even begin to describe it. When we arrived there were hairs all over the bathroom and I even found a pair of dirty knickers under one of the beds. It obviously hasn't improved over the last 10 years.

TheChosenTwo · 08/04/2024 22:17

Oh god that’s a dreadful start to your time away, hopefully the rest of it will go without a hitch and the kids will enjoy themselves at
least.
I went on one of the themed adults weekends in Bognor years ago, it was an aunts 40th or something. 8 of us in 2 adjoining apartments. My sil and I were in a twin room and ended up topping and tailing when she got in her bed and pulled the duvet up and smelled BO from its previous occupant. Closer inspection revealed ginger pubes in her bed 🤮 absolutely revolting,
they hadn’t even made an effort to change the sheets. The other apartment had a full ashtray left behind for their arrival and the curtains had what appeared to be shit stains on them.
We complained and a few of us left a day early, it was absolutely revolting.
I’ll never forget seeing 3 people shagging in the Bob the builder ride - sadly an unforgettable weekend for all the wrong reasons and I’ve never felt compelled to return!

Nudgethatjudge · 08/04/2024 22:17

Filth is not acceptable wherever you are paying to stay.

I always thought at the start of the season, accommodation at holiday parks would be at its best and its the end of season its got potential to be a horror scene.

pootlin · 08/04/2024 22:24

Cheap should mean basic, not dirty.

How much was it OP? I’m guessing it wasn’t even cheap.

Amybelle88 · 08/04/2024 22:27

I went to Skegness butlins a few years ago - we only had a silver room with one bedroom and I can't fault it.

I am a bit of a clean snob truth be told - I'm even fussy about who's house I drink a cup of tea in, so I was very pleasantly surprised,

That being said, im also not surprised at this, there are always rooms like this and it's a shame 🤢

CaffeineIsntCuttingIt · 08/04/2024 22:35

I live very locally to one of the other butlins sites and have alot of friends working there. Some of the stories I've heard would turn your stomach.
The one that always sticks in my mind is that a cleaning team went into an apartment after one of the themed "adult breaks" and found a turd in the kettle and plenty of used drug paraphernalia lying around for them to dispose of. Apparently it's not even that rare an occurrence. How off your face do you need to be to shit in a kettle?🤢

StMarieforme · 08/04/2024 22:41

We go regularly and have never had a dirty apartment. Move and ask for compensation

Sagittarius · 08/04/2024 17:49

I know some people look down on others who go to butlins and haven etc . When you book these places, you book
knowing you aren't going for a luxury holiday, but for fun.

Yes they may be basic, but you ANBU to expect a clean and tidy apartment on arrival. Complain and take photos for evidence, but I'd personally see what the alternative accommodation is like first before packing up and going home, despite it being a faff.

My thoughts. OP paid for a service.

Also the pool is shut and half the fiarground is out if order! This just gets worse but at least I have a clean bed tonight.

Also there are massive queues to do anything that we should have been at the front of but we have been moving our stuff and trapsing around picking up keys and stuff!

The pool doesn't open in the evenings. Did you not read the information on the website. They have half the fairground open if it's not that busy, but swap the rides over regularly iyswim?
I take 3 grandchildren ages 11-17 regularly and they love it all.
The shows are great for kids! Did you book your activities online before you went?

StMarieforme · 08/04/2024 22:46

HelloMiss · 08/04/2024 19:33

All Butlins are like this.....dirty,rundown, shabby

Even the 'upgraded' parts of the sites are below par

I go regularly and they are not!

twilightermummy · 08/04/2024 22:46

I've been a number of times times, stayed in pretty much every accom they have to offer and always found it clean. However, when I went in 2021. I had an expensive necklace stolen by the maintenance team. Luckily it was insured but I needed to involve police. I vowed never to go again but my children have fond memories of it and are begging to go back.

We've been on other other UK breaks with Park dean and to cities etc but this is the one they keep harping on about. They go abroad every year too. I guess it is just pure hyper fun for them but I tend to need a week in bed after it all so it's not much of a holiday imo!

I feel for you though as the pool is the highlight. They should offer you a discount if you ever want to go again. They're good for things like that. Perhaps show them this thread too.

Cheshiresun · 08/04/2024 22:49

So sorry, did you get it sorted or asked to get moved? Sometimes just another apartment/room can be so different.

Always fantasise about going to Butlins as I haven't been since I was a child in the 90's! However, posts like yours put me off and I think I would be disappointed.

I always think of this article. Makes me giggle.

It's no holiday camp...

Gone are the knobbly-knees competitions, donkey derbys and wake-up calls. Butlins has entered the 21st century. Deborah Ross, who was desperate to go there as a child, takes her own son along to see if it lives up to her dreams

Wow! That may explain the brown around and inside the kettle in our 1st apartment!

No the swimming pool is fully shut! There was apparent some issue with it last year and they are still trying to fix it! The slides and lazy river are open. The dodgems have space and a sign but no cars or base there at all the waltzer is out if order and I believe the chairoplains is out if order too.

If you want to feel better, you can watch videos on YouTube of people reviewing butlins and pontins accom.

I haven't been to butlins/pontins as an adult but would never go. It seems so dreary and sad... and sticky. Isn't Haven better for a budget holiday? I have good memories there

OutOfTheHouse · 08/04/2024 23:41

when you book Butlins you don’t expect the Hilton but you do expect it to be clean.

We have been given a clean apartment which is good but I'm all wound up and finding it hard to be positive.

Just read the entire article it's fair to say it's not aged well! The fat bashing and the talk of ethnicity and snobbery that was more acceptable/wide spread in 2003 make it a tricky read but putting them aside I can see where she is coming from. It's a bit of low budget holiday fun that the kids will enjoy even if we don't!

As a teenager I was in a county band (yep band geek here) and we would have residential weekends at Skegness Butlins to do intensive rehearsals. It was always kind of grim. One time lots of our band members were taken down with food poisoning after a trip to the "Oral reef Cafe" (dilapidated signage) - they'd had the chicken curry. Funny, I thought, so had I and I wasn't ill, but then again I had got there later than everyone else and the meat in my curry was clearly not chicken. I had noted that at the time. No idea what it was but at least it wasn't full of bacteria... Yay?

valensiwalensi · 09/04/2024 01:16

Unfortunately yes that does seem to be the norm, seem a fair few videos on tik tok about it and their trip advisor page is…. Interesting
