To think snobbery around the Kardashians is a bit pathetic?

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 13:37

Just doing a rewatch of the series and was discussing it with a colleague. Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

He does know who they are. Whenever they’re mentioned someone always pretends not to know who they are or pretends to never have heard of them. Clearly they think it makes them hugely intelligent and superior.

AIBU to think this is annoying and if you don’t want to discuss a subject don’t join in the conversation?

You know he wanted you to think that he is above such lowbrow entertainment.

Fwiw I think the Kardashian/Jenners are a bunch of vacuous, manipulative, mean girls and I will be avoiding any and all promotion of them in my home.

Mercurial123 · 07/04/2024 14:24

I think it's absolutely fine to not acknowledge their existence. They are major scammers. But if you like them OP, that's all that matters.

HelloMiss · 07/04/2024 14:06

Op you sound obsessed with them

Completely. They’re all I think about.

Tbey lack culture though. Thats why l hate them. Bet they’ve got art worth millions on the wall and don’t even know about who painted them.

Do they ever read a book? Discuss social issues? This is what l called them thick as mince. I k ow they’re successful, but they’re horrible role models.

In fairness they do do both of these things.

OP posts:
FilthyforFirth · 07/04/2024 14:25

You're going to hate my comment then, christ bad enough you watched it once but rewatching the Kardashians?!

TheOriginalEmu · 07/04/2024 14:26

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 13:44

Indeed! Stop with the ingenuity.

To paraphrase Inigo Montoya, “I don’t think that word means what you think it means”

😂

CatamaranViper · 07/04/2024 14:26

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/04/2024 14:14

😂😂😂😂yeah ok

Remove art and add science then. Or maths, or history or anything beyond contouring and botox

I live for them ❤️

😆 are you not embarrassed with that comment?

idontlikealdi · 07/04/2024 14:27

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/04/2024 13:39

The Kardashians are not worthy of any mention.

Thick as mince

While I don't have any affinity with them they are not 'thick as mince'. They are hugely successful, particularly Kylie

To answer your OP, of course people can join a conversation to say they don't know much about the topic. Isn't that just how we learn from each other? As a super fan, perhaps you could educate them...

If you think they're being disingenuous, you're mistaken. Just because you "live" for the Kardashian's, doesn't mean other people have a clue about them.

If you joined in a conversation about 17th century Russia, it wouldn't be annoying or rude to say you knew nothing about it!

I'm aware of who they are. I don't particularly like what I see. It all seems very vacuous. So I choose not to engage with any of their content. I can't understand why you feel so protective about them to be honest. Bit weird.

He didn’t say he didn’t know much about them.

If I claimed I’d never even heard of Russia it would be a bit odd.

So now he says he doesn’t know much about them, not that he’s never heard of them.

CatamaranViper · 07/04/2024 14:30

Don't they also do a load of charity work and speak up about social issues?

I mean I do think they've done more harm than good with their focus on 'beautification'.

candgen625 · 07/04/2024 14:30

Honestly couldn't pick them out in a line up. Heard of them. I know they like to look good and maybe do plastic surgery!! Height of my knowledge.

However "snobbery" goes both ways. A colleges who prided her self on being "an Essex girl" and liked for the only way Is Essex once pretended she didn't know who hitler was when he came up in conversation! Now that's ridiculous

idontlikealdi · 07/04/2024 14:31

Oh and Kim has passed the mini bar and works a lot in women's rights

And just to be clear, with everyone failing to read the OP properly in an ironic mad dash to say the Kardashians are thick, I couldn’t care less if people join my conversation to slag them off, criticise them etc. Would be happy with that discussion. It’s when they speak just to pretend they’ve never so much as heard of them.

If you're having a quiet chat with someone in a breakroom or outside of where people are working, I can see the argument of someone being rude for butting in and that they have a choice whether to listen or not. I can also see it rude and baffling to have had the 'I don't know who they are' conversation with the same person for ten years. That reminds me of teenagers I know who love to do it with people they've had a lot of drama.

If either the volume and/or place of the conversation is leading to people not getting much of a choice whether they listen in or not, then I can see that as also being rude and have less sympathy. The easiest way to stop that is to not bring it up where they are.

I do think it's a bit rude to presume people who've actually never heard of them must be 'very very sheltered'. With entertainment industries and media being as disconnected from each other as they are now, it's quite possible to be actively engaged in one part with little exposure to another. Comparing an American entertainment family, however big their businesses are, to a major country is a bit odd.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 07/04/2024 13:46

Agree he most likely has heard of them I mean, it's hard not to really.

I however am a total snob when it comes to people like the Kardashian's. Vacuous, zero talent and they are making millions by changing their faces every year and making our young girls believe that by buying their average products they too, can achieve such unrealistic beauty standards.

Yup I'm a judgey cow at times.

👍 agreed

How often are you talking about them for this to be an issue?

Twice a day every day.

OP posts:
pictoosh · 07/04/2024 14:35

Yes it is disingenuous snobbery...and frankly, anyone who validates the Kardashians should be prepared to field some of that.
What he really means is, "Don't be so stupid.", but he's not allowed to say that outright so opts for the pass agg approach instead.
What of it?

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 14:35

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/04/2024 14:20

But the person didn’t interrupt to talk about Tolstoy😂😂😂

Why on earth would anyone interrupt a conversation on Neighbours to talk about Tolstoy?!

Fuck me.

Or could it have been sarcasm? Let’s have a good think 🤔

There was nothing to suggest that your comment was sarcastic. You’ve made a thread about being annoyed when someone says that they don’t know who the Kardashians are. So it would seem that you may not be a fan but actually someone who ‘lives for them’ as you put it

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 14:37

AmiShitsaline · 07/04/2024 14:21

I know what you mean OP, same people who claim they don’t watch Tv

Yes, the kind who tell everyone who’ll listen they don’t have a TV - and then the watch it on their laptop.

OP posts:
Juicyj1993 · 07/04/2024 14:37

I think the issue is getting mixed up here. It isn't about whether this guy likes the Kardashian's or not or whether he knows the ins and outs of their lives. It's about someone claiming not to have heard of something so that they can somehow feel superior or make someone else feel inferior to them.

Is it annoying when people claim not to have heard of something or someone that is a huge part of pop culture (whether we agree with it being such a part or not)? Yes it is.

Imagine if someone had said they'd never heard of Ronaldo, Harry Potter or ABBA? I'm into none of those things, but I know what they are.

When someone claims that they have never heard of something when they so blatantly have, it is very rarely to be nice and normally from a place of judgement.

TheOriginalEmu · 07/04/2024 14:26

🙄 Disingenuity. I’m sure you could work it out.
