To think snobbery around the Kardashians is a bit pathetic?

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 13:37

Just doing a rewatch of the series and was discussing it with a colleague. Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

He does know who they are. Whenever they’re mentioned someone always pretends not to know who they are or pretends to never have heard of them. Clearly they think it makes them hugely intelligent and superior.

AIBU to think this is annoying and if you don’t want to discuss a subject don’t join in the conversation?

OPs just said that he did say he's never heard of them...

She said initially that he claimed to have never heard of them (which sounds unlikely as it’s all the op ever seems to talk about at work) and then said that he said he didn’t know much about them.

Perhaps this poor chap is fed up with the op farting on about them all day long and it’s his way of telling her to shut up.

😆 are you not embarrassed with that comment?

I’m more embarrassed for all the posters who can’t recognise a sarcastic reply to a rude comment.

So now he says he doesn’t know much about them, not that he’s never heard of them.

Read it again.

I know what you mean OP, same people who claim they don’t watch Tv

I don’t watch tv. I don’t own a tv. 🤷🏼‍♀️

thecatsthecats · 07/04/2024 14:45

I'm far from a follower of the Kardashians, but my brain is like a sponge. I got all sorts of shit at work for answering a fastest finger first question about them in a pub quiz.

There's nothing special about not knowing something. Most of us don't know most things.

(It was far more tragic, IMO, that someone could answer ALL the questions about soaps for example rather than display a broad range of knowledge about the world even outside of their interests.)

ButterflyKu · 07/04/2024 14:36

There was nothing to suggest that your comment was sarcastic. You’ve made a thread about being annoyed when someone says that they don’t know who the Kardashians are. So it would seem that you may not be a fan but actually someone who ‘lives for them’ as you put it

Annoyed when someone interrupts a conversation to lie about not knowing who they are.

ShoNuff · 07/04/2024 14:48

People have completely different interests and cultural reference points. It doesn’t make them snobs.

I know who the Kardashians are, but I know plenty of people who really don’t follow social media or popular culture and wouldn’t have a scooby who any of them are.

I can name one Taylor Swift song. I have no opinion on her. I just don’t know much about her, other than she is very popular right now. I’ve never been into pop music, so 🤷‍♀️

Read it again.

I’ve read it thanks.

In your first post you said Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

Then later you said He didn’t say he didn’t know much about them.

Not knowing much about them is not the same as never having heard of them.

You need hobby in that case. What does it matter to you if someone 'pretends' or not? Ignore and move on.

See there are plenty people who simply don’t believe this. Same as there are people who don’t believe that some of us couldn’t name a single Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran song. (I’ve actually seen Ed Sheeran live, before he was famous, and I still couldn’t name one of his songs!)

I think the issue is getting mixed up here. It isn't about whether this guy likes the Kardashian's or not or whether he knows the ins and outs of their lives. It's about someone claiming not to have heard of something so that they can somehow feel superior or make someone else feel inferior to them.

Is it annoying when people claim not to have heard of something or someone that is a huge part of pop culture (whether we agree with it being such a part or not)? Yes it is.

Imagine if someone had said they'd never heard of Ronaldo, Harry Potter or ABBA? I'm into none of those things, but I know what they are.

When someone claims that they have never heard of something when they so blatantly have, it is very rarely to be nice and normally from a place of judgement.

Exactly this! Thank you.

I actually love this particular colleague to pieces but it’s so bloody annoying. It’s not just him and the Kardashians, but as a PP said people lie about not having ever heard of many people in pop culture because they think it’s beneath them.

Where did I say he said he didn’t know much about them? You’ve either misread or are making stuff up.

How do you know they are lying though?

Don't let it bother you. Just be content in your own likes and interests.

Great. I’ve got my hobby. Let’s say it’s running. I speak to a fellow runner who I know to watch the Kardashians. We’re chatting to each other and a man wanders over to tell us he’s never heard of the Kardashians, when he absolutely has. AIBU to think he’s pretending to never have heard of them just to demonstrate he is far too clever for such fripperies, and this is annoying and snobby?

YABU to care. Hypothetical man sounds like someone to be avoided and forgotten.

Is it Marie kondo who says to lose stuff that doesn't bring you joy? Sometimes the same has to be said of people.

He’s great company and a close friend. He’s just annoying when he does this.

It’s not just him, I just used this example.
