To think snobbery around the Kardashians is a bit pathetic?

Just doing a rewatch of the series and was discussing it with a colleague. Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

He does know who they are. Whenever they’re mentioned someone always pretends not to know who they are or pretends to never have heard of them. Clearly they think it makes them hugely intelligent and superior.

AIBU to think this is annoying and if you don’t want to discuss a subject don’t join in the conversation?

I don’t really have any feelings on them, but fair play at least they’ve done well for themselves on their own merit …unlike the Royals

scrapes barrell bottom 😁

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 07/04/2024 14:10

I’ve actually got a bit of a soft spot for Kim K. She’s definitely not thick as mince. She passed the ‘baby’ Bar exam which isn’t something easily done. She’s been very vocal about wrongful convictions and even threw her weight behind getting a mans execution commuted. I also think she’s handled the abuse Kanye has thrown at her with dignity. It cannot be easy to co-parent with someone so mentally unwell.

Bazinga007 · 07/04/2024 14:12

I have heard of them, never watched their show, I know they are mostly made of plastic and one has done porn.

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 14:12

lovehatelovehate · 07/04/2024 13:58

How are you so sure he has heard of them?

Because he’s spent the last ten years telling me he’s never heard of them whenever they’re mentioned. He has a daughter for whom he buys Kylie products. When challenged he says ‘well all I know is their dad was involved in the OJ Simpson trial and Jenner was in the Olympics’.

He absolutely knows who they are. He just likes to pretend he doesn’t because it’s too low brow to have even heard of them - and makes a point of specifically joining the conversation to explain this.

A stamp serves a purpose though ( well not with Royal Mail at the moment, but generally does)

You realise they are still people? Saying they serve no purpose is canny shit.

PinotPony · 07/04/2024 14:13

To answer your OP, of course people can join a conversation to say they don't know much about the topic. Isn't that just how we learn from each other? As a super fan, perhaps you could educate them...

If you think they're being disingenuous, you're mistaken. Just because you "live" for the Kardashian's, doesn't mean other people have a clue about them.

If you joined in a conversation about 17th century Russia, it wouldn't be annoying or rude to say you knew nothing about it!

I'm aware of who they are. I don't particularly like what I see. It all seems very vacuous. So I choose not to engage with any of their content. I can't understand why you feel so protective about them to be honest. Bit weird.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/04/2024 14:07

Tbey lack culture though. Thats why l hate them. Bet they’ve got art worth millions on the wall and don’t even know about who painted them.

Do they ever read a book? Discuss social issues? This is what l called them thick as mince. I k ow they’re successful, but they’re horrible role models.

I couldn't tell you anything about art. Does that mean I'm not "worthy" according to you? Why do you get to decide that?

I don't like them for various reasons, but I can't stand people who are so up their own arses and think that "intellectual" people are superior to others. I like people based on whether they are kind, generous, helpful personally, not based on how many artists they can name.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/04/2024 14:13

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 14:01

Fine, so then why join the conversation?

Don’t listen, don’t join in. But no, they break their necks to come and tell you they’ve never even heard of the Kardashians.

Why not? It’s not an exclusive relationship. You can have a conversation with more than one person. Maybe they wanted to be provocative about such a vapid subject?

Who knows?

😂😂😂😂yeah ok

Remove art and add science then. Or maths, or history or anything beyond contouring and botox

Juicyj1993 · 07/04/2024 14:14

I can see why people might not be a fan of them/know very little about them. But I also find it hard to believe that someone hasn't heard of them at all. I don't like them, but they are all over the media.

I think you'd have to be someone who doesn't have an interest in pop culture and hasn't for the last decade to have not heard of them.

How often are you talking about them for this to be an issue?

ButterflyKu · 07/04/2024 13:59

You live for them? And you’re a grown adult?

Yep. From dawn to dusk my every waking thought is of the Kardashians. Considering changing my name to Dash and living in an LA tent so I can catch a glimpse one day 🤞🙄

The purpose of the show is entertainment. If someone was discussing Neighbours I wouldn’t interrupt to explain I’d never heard of Neighbours because I’m too busy reading Tolstoy.

Oh I totally agree. I was just using the OP's words.
I do believe they kick started the culture of lip and face fillers, botox, boob jobs, lipo, bum lifts, eye lifts, Turkey teef etc to the mass degree we see now. Young adult women ruining their faces and bodies before they have even fully grown into themselves.
I doubt they have read a book between them.

🙄 Get a grip.

I would bet my house that they all have a hundred minions who do the hard work for them. Likely lots of young intern types.

And of course many successful "businesses " have this operating model but to claim Kim K is the driving force is Hilario

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 07/04/2024 14:19

Hilarious

I agree it’s very strange. It’s one thing to be a fan of someone and take an interest but living for someone you don’t know? That’s a bit dramatic no…

Or could it have been sarcasm? Let’s have a good think 🤔

But the person didn’t interrupt to talk about Tolstoy😂😂😂

Why on earth would anyone interrupt a conversation on Neighbours to talk about Tolstoy?!

Deadringer · 07/04/2024 14:21

Notsuretoputit · 07/04/2024 13:44

Why join a conversation about them then?

They are not thick as mince. It sounds so jealous and bitter when people speak about women who’ve launched such a cultural and financial empire like that.

They are famous because they have famous fathers and are attractive looking and very actively court publicity. Selling shit to impressionable people with more money than sense hardly makes them part of a 'cultural and financial empire' even if it has made them rich. I am aware of them because my dd used to like their show until she turned 20 and grew out of it.

AmiShitsaline · 07/04/2024 14:21

It took her four (?) tries to pass a first year law exam.

Fair play to her for trying, but I don't think it does much to dispell the 'thick as mince' charges tbh

Why is it an issue if people join in and say they haven't heard of them? Just carry on with the conversation surely?

Because he has heard of them. It’s a very, very sheltered person who hasn’t. It’s disingenuous snobbery.
