To think snobbery around the Kardashians is a bit pathetic?

Just doing a rewatch of the series and was discussing it with a colleague. Sure enough another colleague pipes up with ‘I’ve never heard of them, don’t know who they are’.

He does know who they are. Whenever they’re mentioned someone always pretends not to know who they are or pretends to never have heard of them. Clearly they think it makes them hugely intelligent and superior.

AIBU to think this is annoying and if you don’t want to discuss a subject don’t join in the conversation?

I think it would be very hard to have never heard of them. I could come up with several names although not attach them to the correct faces - I can however still identify all the Osmonds! This work colleague is obviously using "I've never heard of them" to mean "I know virtually nothing about them". Is it snobbery, possibly. Is it justified snobbery, possibly. I can admire OP's tongue in cheek responses while not sharing her regard for celebrities (perhaps I should learn more about them before judging but I worry that every click and Internet search adds to their wealth and sense of self-importance).

Thank you.

I don’t hold them in high regard really. I have it playing in the background on lazy days sometimes and do admire their ability to keep themselves relevant and I envy their money and lifestyles, but I also think they’ve got many faults.

I enjoy their show the same way as I do Mumsnet or watching Corrie. I just can’t stand the faux bewilderment people express when they’re mentioned. And I do think calling them thick is mired in sexism, the same way as people who’ve never used Mumsnet disparage it by saying it’s women talking about nappies and dresses.

I love that bit in big bang theory when penny is testing and expanding Sheldon's knowledge and he is trying to name the Kardashians and she is doing physics questions.

I could definitely see certain people not knowing. They're a bit of a generation.

I vaguely know a few things:

One did a never wear fur campaign then wore fur.
The dad invaded one of his daughter's privacy by trying on her underwear (so creepy) maybe Kim.
One got plastic surgery on her lips and then started selling lipstick to get her look.
One is bullied for being fat when she is perfectly normal.
Kim was married to Kayne.
One or several of them exploited women by using their bodies to grow a baby.
Kim flew out some women from a war torn area (the only thing on this list that's positive, but at least it's something)

Anyotherdude · 07/04/2024 17:39

I think he is just having an opinion about them. It’s not great for you, as he sounds as if he’s judging you for finding their lives fascinating, while he doesn’t think they deserve the hype.
Might be worth asking him what topics he finds more fascinating: at least then you can judge him for his football/gaming/politics/world affairs/airfix kit habit and you’ll be even!
I did the same to the anti GoT crowd at work, and the anti HP relative who thought that JK Rowling was the devil incarnate for her books being so popular! (And that was before Trans-gate)

MsLuxLisbon · 07/04/2024 17:40

No, not really. He probably doesn't know which one is which. I find worship of them far more 'pathetic' if I'm honest. What do any of them even do?

PlasticOno · 07/04/2024 13:40

Just normal life. I know they’re a reality TV family and that they’re of Armenian descent. That’s literally the sum total of what I know. Not everyone is that attuned to reality tv.

I see their name bandied about but still don't know what they actually do for their 'fame'.

Big tits, big arses, TV programmes and seemingly little else. But give the people what they want etc.

I read I live for them as tongue in cheek. But, of course, a post about snobbery and reality TV 'stars' is a deliberately confrontational attempt to fill a quiet Sunday afternoon

I suppose. It's all sport on the radio of a weekend, and I just can't bear sport on the radio (clearly have my own issues there!) so I come here!

Sallibays · 07/04/2024 16:39

Passed the bar, became a qualified lawyer and works to get wrongly accused people out of prison. I'm not a fan but they aren't thick

Can I just point out that she didn’t pass the bar nor is she a lawyer, also even if she has that would make ONE of them a lawyer…. that doesn’t necessarily mean the rest aren’t thick as pigshit.
Disclaimer: I’m not say they are or aren’t, I don’t know.

Oh I could definitely butt into sport conversations with "I've never heard of xyz"

I had hoped for a discussion about why there is such snobbery when it comes to the Kardashians and why people pretend to have never heard of them. A couple of posters have touched on the sexism element but largely it’s just turned into people hurling insults at them and me. Predictable I suppose.

They play themselves as thick fucks, so they're treated as such. They don't command respect. Good for them that they're loaded etc, but money doesn't equal respect.

She most certainly didn't. She passed something called the 'baby bar' after FOUR attempts (I only know this because one of my friends who is a lawyer was scoffing about her) I get so tired of people saying that they are these smart, savvy women. They are grifters who think it's ok to rent other womens' uteri, rip off real creators, and tell constant lies. I hope and believe that when the mother dies they will fade into obscurity.

tiggergoesbounce · 07/04/2024 18:13

There are definitely people who don't know much about them. My brother and his Mrs would have no idea about them. They may know them as a rich celeb family but they wouldn't be able to name any of them, except maybe Kim at a push but even that i think they wouldn't be 100%. They don't say that as being snobby they just don't move in circles with people who are interested in that sort of TV. They also couldn't name a current soap opera characters.

I personally don't know a lot about them either, other than Kim started making her money out of that staged sex release video she was supposed to know nothing about.

And I may be wrong as, as i say i don't know about them but i am under the impression they all do social media things to tell young girls how to look and profit from it. I feel they may be part of the trend of getting procedures done themselves but then tell girls how to look "beautiful" using their products.

The baby bar only has a 20% pass rate.

I do think their normalisation of renting other women’s wombs is grotesque. I also think they bully (Taylor Swift, Black Chyna, that woman who was Kylie’s friend, Jordan?), have exceptionally dysfunctional relationships and present unrealistic beauty standards.

But they have addressed the problems with surrogacy (Khloe, which was a surprise), and beauty standards (Kendall).

I find them interesting to observe as a phenomenon and certainly Kris is not thick. I don’t think they present themselves as stupid, I think they try and present themselves as business women, and I think Kris, Kim and Khloe are successful business women in their own right.

Even if it has a low pass rate, taking four attempts to pass when you have all the time in the world to study and no pressures or money worries is hardly impressive. I agree with the rest of your comment, though.

I wouldn't call them businesswomen "in their own right" they were nepo babies and Kris married 2 wealthy men. She was definitely money savvy but they've not come from nothing.

Exactly what I know about them too. And they all have names starting with K. And their father used to be a male athlete, and is now winning woman of the year awards.

Have never seen their show, have no interest in their lives. Have never seen an episode of Towie, or Geordie Shore, or Made in CHelsea, or any of that style of TV. It's just not my thing - nothing snobbish about it.

Crunchymum · 07/04/2024 18:22

I think we should be taking the Kardashian's very seriously. They are the very epitome of all that is wrong with the representation of women in the media.

We are normalising this terrifying and unnatural version of "beauty" and it needs to be challenged.

Not knowing who the Kardashian's are is doing young women a disservice. We should all know who they are to be able to explain to our DD's why they should not aspire to this notion of beauty.

Same should be said of all the women perpetuating this 'world view' of beauty. Botox, lip fillers, fake teeth and hair, tiny waists, big arses are not beautiful. Natural is beautiful.

I’m not saying that they’ve all collectively said surrogacy is wrong and exploitative, but it was interesting to hear Khloe talk about feeling guilty over it, feeling uncomfortable about the transactional nature of it and so on.

It’s rare for celebrities to speak out against their experience of surrogacy. I was surprised they aired it.
