Bullshitter at work - could this be true?

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 06:09

There's a woman at work who is basically full of lies. A few people have fallen for it , but in order to have done everything she's done, she would need to be 200 years old.
Her latest tale is that she was caught speeding on the motorway at 120mph but the police let her off with a warning. Surely that cannot be true? I was under the impression that the police always act on speeding that is this dramatic. What do you guys think?

Also, she absolutely did not assist in her own operation after coming round removing her oxygen and tutoring the surgeon. I'm willing to bet money on that

I agree but from my viewpoint and I'm standing by it, unless one has irrefutable evidence, the woman could be telling the truth.

What we must never forget is that some peoples lives are very, very different to that of us and we must always keep an open mind, unless presented with the facts that counter that.

Then I can only hope that your credulity serves you well, and encourage you not to keep your mind so open that your brain falls out 😊.

I could say the same, but I wont.

That is your prerogative. Just as it is your prerogative, please afford the doubt that I am raising

Thank you and I do wish you a good evening. (For the official record, it is a sincere wish as I am like that all of the time)

Yet you don't afford the OP the benefit of the doubt when she said she wasn't jealous, and that she knows the woman is lying.

WhatTheFuckIsThat · 06/04/2024 18:17

I couldn't ever be bothered to listen to a bullshitter like that. I know someone who reckons -

her husband is on 1 6-figure salary (he isn't, and she does a cleaning job. Nothing wrong with that, by the way)
She said the pub she occasionally works at has her "name above the door" - of course it hasn't.
Her daughter "taught herself to read at the age of 2". Nonsense.

I simply say "That's nice" when she starts, then change the subject.

Remember I've worked with her for a few years so the first few were spent giving the benefit of the doubt and noticing how many crazy stories there were. This didn't all happen yesterday

Ok, I will raise the white flag and award you with the benefits of any doubts I had.

However, please do come back and share with us when you find out that what she says was true, incredible to believe but true

I must go out in about 7 minutes.

The reason is that I'm interested in the thread and am completely at liberty to post that someone has already made the useless, negative point that you did.

You didn't care enough to read the thread but you did care enough to make a pointless comment. Must be a reason for that too?

I didn’t carry on reading because my point was that I’ve already stated please carry on reading the thread but leave me alone there seems to be an issue that you have to keep doing this go about you day have a lovely one👍

Absolutely not i was just saying why do you care meaning let it just go over your head …I don’t appreciate you being vile to me calling me names thankyou …I’m entitled to my opinion and I won’t be giving you any more time enjoy the rest of your day

Nodancingshoes · 06/04/2024 18:26

I find there's always one bullshitter in every workplace..We had one who told us her dad was a millionaire and she lived in a huge manor house. The stories got more and more outlandish and by this point I already knew it wasn't true. I just tended to smile and nod...

Nicetobenice67 · 06/04/2024 18:39

Sometimes when ppl lie like that maybe there is something behind it for instance making themselves feel important to others as to get attention..I feel quite sad about ppl like that tbh I would just let it go over my head

One night in the 1980s I was stopped by the police on the M11 at 110mph. It was 2 in the morning and there was literally no traffic on the road. I was in a hire car and had a foreign driving licence. Stone-cold sober, I just wanted to get back to my hotel near Cambridge as quickly as possible. (I still have no idea why I did it, though. Crazy.)

Anyway, the cops scratched their heads a bit and called HQ, then one of them said "Alright, we're just going to give you a bollocking... er, a caution". I can still remember his Welsh accent. And that was it, they read me the formal caution and I was on my way. I assume I was saved from further proceedings because it would have been too much hassle for them to book me with my non-UK licence.

As ever when the police stop me, I was extremely apologetic and cooperative. I do that even when I think they have no reason to stop me, which certainly wasn't the case here. Not my finest hour.

This reminds me of a tale told by a friend of mine (also in the 1980's) who had a Mercedes sports car.

He was driving very fast up the A1M late one evening, and was eventually pulled over by a police car, flashing lights and all. The officer said "We had a heck of a job catching up with you"!

Yeah apart from the side eyeing of a few colleagues, we do let it wash over us. We have other things to discuss while the kettle is boiling, like what we are watching on netflix or the time I punched a shark that was attacking prince Charles and he made me the Duchy of cheese which is why I get free cheese forever.

You have no evidence that they are "lies" as you put it. I'll put it to you again, could it just be you are a tad envious of this persons lifestyle?

I'll put it to you again

This is a bit weird - you seem to be getting rather over-invested in trying to prove that the colleague may be all of the things she claims and that the OP is somehow 'envious' of her. It's a chat forum - not a cross-examination - and nobody is Head of the Chat Police.

The likelihood of the colleague being all the things the OP says she's claimed to be/has happened is about as likely as Lord Lucan or Shergar reappearing. Does it occur to you that you're wrong, rather than the OP - and perhaps the colleague has an inferiority complex? Keeping on about what 'evidence' the OP has is just ridiculous - are you the colleague?

("I put it to you again, Mr Jones, were you in the vicinity of number 10 Downing Street on the night of the 10th March, wearing yellow socks, a tracksuit and disguised as Boris Johnson?").

MumblesParty · 06/04/2024 12:44

@LordEmsworth youve clearly never had the misfortune to work with a serial liar. It’s actually surprisingly annoying. I think it’s because it starts to feel as if they’re taking the piss out of you, assuming you’re stupid enough to believe their rubbish. It’s hard to explain, but when someone lies day in day out, just for the sake of it, it’s really bloody irritating.

Everyone at work is really bloody irritating tho...

My point actually was, what difference does it make, whether this one thing is true. If this one thing is true, it doesn't make everything else true, and vice versa. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day...

FallingAngelRisingApe · 06/04/2024 20:17

Oh! We have one of these: she's simultaneously too poor to buy her lunch but also going on a fabulous holiday which she discusses with her partner on her phone (at great length) during work hours.
She's also constantly "buying" expensive stuff from the internet (also during work time) but she's also very financially embarrassed because her only income is her role in the organisation as relief staff.
Not only that, she is very highly qualified to work in banking and finance, but can't work the simple spread-sheet I made to make evening cashing-up more simple for everyone.
She's been accepted for several high-flying roles after exceptional interviews, yet here she is, 3 years later, still in her relief role with us... She also has one of those "abrasive personalities" which makes her an absolute pain to manage.
People have been known to take leave when they see her name on the rota.

Ugh.

There's no issue. How very peculiar you should think that.

I wrote to you twice and the second time was to answer your question.

TopOfTheCliff · 06/04/2024 20:31

Thinking about this I have a seven year old relative who has started boasting to us about how rich his DF is ( he’s not!) and how many thousand tools he has. DF is also “an excellent driver with super quick reactions who can drive right up behind other cars as he can stop so quickly”. He is becoming rather obnoxious. We are trying to work out a solution. He will become very unpopular at school if he carries on. Maybe she is the grown up version of my little relative!

SoupChicken · 06/04/2024 20:54

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 07:29

No it doesn't begin with N
It's weird at work as some people are totally sucked in by her and some are just side eyeing each other. This is quite outing but she once said she removed her oxygen mask in an operation and guided the surgeon how to do it as she knew he was doing it wrong

Hahahaha, I used to work with someone like her, every story started with ‘when I was in the army’ - it turned out she had been in the TA about 30 years earlier.

EnglishBluebell · 06/04/2024 22:09

If I told you all the things I've done/messes I've got tangled up in/places I've ended up etc you'd be branding me a bully bullshitter but it's all true! I mean I know these people do exist, who make shit up because they think it makes them seem more interesting but don't assume it's always bullshit

Ofcourseshecan · 06/04/2024 23:05

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 06:41

I don't take it to heart and it doesn't bother me in a negative way, but they really are embellished ridiculous stories
I don't want to put exact details as someone might recognise.
But imagine being 35 , and already you've been a doctor, a vet, a solicitor , ran your own business and had 3 children. You've also solved a murder by overhearing something at a pub and been part of the team that brought down the Rochdale grooming gang despite never being near Rochdale

I’d be inclined to tell her about your top-secret exploits with the SAS, and how you’d been shortlisted for a Nobel Prize.

Oh dear, do we need to clear it with Nicetobenice67 first* *before posting anything? There's the rest of us thinking it was....oh, the horror of it! - a chat forum!!!!😂

🤣 that actually sounds more believable than your bullshitting colleague having woken up during her operation to advise the surgeon on it. What a bellend she is.

I'd be tempted to bullshit one up her every time.

Oh what a coincidence, that happened to me too. Everyone clapped and then they kept me awake to give advice on the surgery they were doing in the next room over the intercom.

pinkstripeycat · 07/04/2024 09:10

Oh I wish I knew sometime like this! 😂

I’d have laughed out loud at this and the taking everyone’s pulse Ive have stared at her and smirked.

Dsis told me a tale of a tall storyteller once. Apparently she lived in a penthouse flat and the people above were very noisy. 😂 That was one of her smaller tales
