Bullshitter at work - could this be true?

crochetmonkey74 · 06/04/2024 06:09

There's a woman at work who is basically full of lies. A few people have fallen for it , but in order to have done everything she's done, she would need to be 200 years old.
Her latest tale is that she was caught speeding on the motorway at 120mph but the police let her off with a warning. Surely that cannot be true? I was under the impression that the police always act on speeding that is this dramatic. What do you guys think?

I worked with a girl who told us her Mum used to be married to H Samual and so she could walk into any branch and have whatever she wanted for free at any time. Also that she actually sung all of Kylie's songs and Kylie mimed them. There were many more things but she was hilarious and had no idea that we all thought she was batshit 😂

😂The "H" in H Samuel stands for Harriet, and she died in 1908.

Blondiebeachbabe · 06/04/2024 14:40

I'm married to a cop, and I have also been a cop in the past. No way in hell did she get a warning for doing 120mph.

But with all the other tall tales, you know she's a liar anyway.

I'd laugh at her tbh.

I bet if you've been to Tenerife, she's been to Elevenerife, eh? LOL.

PonyPatter44 · 06/04/2024 14:52

I used to work with one of these as well! She apparently lived a life of high adventure, her boyfriend was something senior in the Navy and was on the COBRA committee, some Eastern European men were plotting to abduct her so we had the police involved at work and she had to be escorted to her car (I thought we should have let them abduct her - they'd have brought her straight back again!). She used to make stuff up about other people at work and get them into trouble. She was definitely dangerous and not wired up right.

She now has a child who is permanently ill and either in hospital or being blue-lighted to hospital. She posts all the details of the child's illnesses all over her social media. Im very very suspicious about this, but very limited to what I can do. She's not getting so much engagement now, so the child appears to be getting more unwell. It's worrying.

These people are only entertaining as long as noone is actually suffering.

It is usually an automatic ban over 100 - I’d have though definitely at 120.

No it’s not. The guidelines are 6 points or a short ban. Plenty of magistrates favour the points as they follow you round rather than a ban which is over quickly and only a minor inconvenience.

I know someone who went 100 in a 30 and didn’t get banned (despite my protests to the contrary!).

my uncle bullshits. I used to trustingly believe every word until one day, at work, I proudly told one of his stories. In front of the person it actually happened to. I was mortified.

After that I only believe half of what he comes out with, and I notice discrepancies in his stories but I just let him continue. I think some people just enjoy the attention and they don’t feel like they’re lying.

FizzyDucks · 06/04/2024 15:02

Some of these stories are completely batshit. It's really interesting.

I knew a girl at school who made up a boyfriend, sent herself texts from a different phone pretending they were from him, sent herself flowers etc. We started to get suspicious and then suddenly he had a horrible car accident and he was on life support and then...died! It all came out as a total lie in the end. In her case I think it was a self esteem thing, pretty sad really. I do wonder if she has graduated to adult bullshitter now or whether she grew out of it.

I also used to work with a lady who wasn't the bullshitter herself but her boyfriend was and she believed all of it, even though it was the most ludicrous stories - for example, he knew Beyoncé and had VIP tickets to see her but there was always a reason they couldn't go last minute etc. He had claimed celebrities owed him money so this nice lady was loaning him money. It was awful. We all tried to tell her but she just didn't want to hear it. Luckily she is no longer with him.

Delphiniumandlupins · 06/04/2024 15:05

My DH and I used to know someone like this. Nice enough bloke but he'd served in all the armed forces, built several houses single-handed (replaced the kitchen and two bathrooms one weekend), travelled everywhere (usually sailing/rowing solo or flying his own plane) etc. We never challenged him because it was always interesting what he would come up with and we didn't spend much time in his company. We still, 40 years later, use his name to describe a particular kind of tall tale.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 06/04/2024 15:07

OP, with some respect, are you envious of her?

When I worked at times I though WTH people fitted in going out to eat after work, visiting friends and doing shopping? This is because I wanted a rest and they did not

Everyone has missed a fundamental point re the OP re "speeding."
It could have easily been the woman had the KMP showing on her car in place of MPH and there only speeding a little ie 5 mph on a standard motorway

I recall the time when one lady who was really jealous of others doing well taking the p out of a young office assistant as the office assistant had claimed dad owned a plane - she'd only mentioned this as people were chatting about fear of flying. I told this girl to show us a pic and to all - there it was a plane, a twin propleer thing, dad as pilot as he enjoyed flying and did PT flights to cover costs as there are a lot of costs keeping a plane airworthy plus storage

Therefore, either ignore this lady or give her then benefit of doubt.

Why not live and let live and not waste your life thinking if someone at work really does what they say or not.

Probably because it gets annoying on here when chat threads on a chat forum get policed by people who attempt to shut it down with the 'I don't understand' thing.

It’s my opinion why would you care and I stand by that …I understand other ppl may not think that way but it is still MY OPINION have a fab day

crumbledog · 06/04/2024 15:16

Used to work with one of these. She was a terrible administrator, would never finish any work given and would add clip art to official documents, presumably to compensate for terrible quality of whatever she’d typed. She took on the job role by proxy of wherever she was working, same if she read and article about a holiday destination, she’d been there snorkelling, water gliding, parachuting from 10,000 feet - she was very unfit, so it was obviously lies.
She eventually went to work in doctors surgery as a receptionist, so probably worked her way to top surgeon by now.

Hahahahhaaha definitely not envious at all. Her tales are silly and clearly lies. Nothing to be envious of

120? I drive a 2.2 and it doesn’t like doing over 95. In our area, 120 would indeed be an automatic ban.

We had an elevenarife at my old work, you could see her thinking about how to outdo anyone else’s stories. It was entertaining but I never understood why she felt the need, she was attractive, entertaining and certainly didn’t need to embellish or exaggerate to be popular. Maybe serious issues? Who knows, I’m certainly no expert.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator it does become impossible to give somebody who embellishes, exaggerates and invents stories 'the benefit of the doubt' when you know (over time) that three quarters of what they say is fiction.

I'd recommend being a bit more guarded than to give them the benefit of the doubt! OP doesn't have to react, say 'ok, citizen's arrest for telling porky pies'' but she can privately think 'oh, off to the races'

Anyway, the woman I know who is like this, I'm not jealous of her because I want people in my life to feel a connection to me and enjoy my company. I know she's always off doing something but I wonder (genuinely, i am wondering) do any of those people enjoy her company Specifically hers.? Not the gang she assembles. But hers. I feel like it'd be hard to say yes. But what do I know.

TeaGinandFags · 06/04/2024 15:19

I feel your pain, OP.

Being near such people is annoying and draining.

The best advice I can give is to turn it into a game that you can play. Invent the most ludicrous bollocks and see how she reacts. Your starter for 10 is your forthcoming holiday in Elevenorife where you will be painting the Pope's portrait.

Enjoy 😁

I'm not going to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who says she woke up in an operation and guided the surgeon who she somehow knew was doing it wrong!!

I used to work for a big 4 accountants. In the execs office they had EAs/PAs there. One of them was of Greek/cypriot origin but British born.

She told another PA and all the other EAs/PAs that she was engaged to a wealthy Greek/Cypriot man and had a huge engagement ring but couldn’t wear it out as she was worried it would get stolen. We erred on not believing her. I think she’d had a fling with one of the office boys too so to go from that to almost a millionaire was a bit of a stretch. She kept on promising to bring the ring in one day, when she’d be driven in by his staff but never did. She’s left there now. Unmarried apparently or no one hears from her.

67Namechange · 06/04/2024 15:21

There was a guy on one of those 'motorway cops' shows who was doing 150mph and he just got a fine

depending on the operation, this is theoretically possible... if she was sedated rather than having a full ga

what operation was it?

also certain brain surgeries are done awake with patient involvement

That's hilarious. the woman i know like this, she'd mentioned having a perforated bowel. whatever that is. Sounds serious. Anyway, at some school fundraiser she was having her second glass of wine with some wings in a chilli and garlic sauce and I said, it's so amazing that you can eat normally with your perforated bowel. Her husband's head did a 360 degree swivel. he looked at her like. Really. I'm a cow. :-p

I don't take it to heart and it doesn't bother me in a negative way, but they really are embellished ridiculous stories
I don't want to put exact details as someone might recognise.
But imagine being 35 , and already you've been a doctor, a vet, a solicitor , ran your own business and had 3 children. You've also solved a murder by overhearing something at a pub and been part of the team that brought down the Rochdale grooming gang despite never being near Rochdale

I do know someone who by 35 ish was a doctor, teacher and lawyer (as in an actual lawyer, not just had a law degree).

LlynTegid · 06/04/2024 15:29

Depending on the nature of your work, ask her to stop telling such lies in front of you. The 120mph story you could argue affects you because someone you knew was seriously injured or died in a road crash where speeding was a cause.

It could have been 120kph, so if she cannot read a speedo properly she needs glasses and you could complain to the DVLA about her fitness to drive.

Then when she next tells a lie, complain formally about her. It is unwanted behaviour.

No it doesn't begin with N
It's weird at work as some people are totally sucked in by her and some are just side eyeing each other. This is quite outing but she once said she removed her oxygen mask in an operation and guided the surgeon how to do it as she knew he was doing it wrong

That would make me burst out laughing if I heard it being told with a straight face.

One of our colleagues does say "oh right" at everything and refuses to give any emotional response. Some of our younger colleagues seem to believe every word she says though. I came into the staff room one day and she was taking everyone's pulse. God knows what that was about

😂😂😂You have a live one OP
