What’s your ‘mum uniform’?

Bit of a lame expression but I’m looking to buy new clothes that are practical for school run, park etc but easy to throw on together (ie not buying in outfits) and not too slobby/hideous. Just interested to see what everyone else wears, at 32 I’m too old for teen fashion but not ready for Next/Boden yet 😂

I’m lucky enough to WFH so I wear casual wear on the school run - usually smart joggers and a t-shirt and trainers much like this

Jeans and a t shirt. I buy the t-shirt bundles from rapanui.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 05/04/2024 23:01

Next online is my go to. It has so many brands, not just Next. You can order a ton of stuff and try it on at home.
I am wearing wide leg trousers (Next petite is a god send to me being short) and white converse/trainers alot at mo. Also cargo trousers, yay the 90s revival 😄

I don't know what I like either haha thats the problem. I have no sense of style.

Just shoot me now if anyone ever tells me ‘ooh, you’ve got your Mum Uniform on today!’ I’m a professional with a career, a sportswoman, and an individual with tastes of my own. Dressing in a particular way just to fit in with a mum stereotype would make me die a bit inside.

YaMuvva · 05/04/2024 23:14

I think everyone needs to calm down, OP is only asking for clothing ideas.

OP is this a dumb and run to school vibe or dumb and to work earn a living look? 🤔

Had to Google Cold Water Swimming jacket. I think I know the look you are talking about now!

But if you were an actual cold water swimmer you would have to have one for the school run and one for training!!

In fairness we're by the coast and I assume the mums are going swimming at some point that day, or that it was just the easiest thing they grabbed in a rush. Surely people don't wear them inland?

My go to outfit is jeans, Chelsea boots and colourful jumper, with a big wool coat or lighter jacket.

mightydolphin · 05/04/2024 23:34

I'm 33 and do shop at Next, mainly because my MIL kindly gifts me vouchers for there on special occasions. They do have a good range of brands!

I just got some nice Superdry cargos from there for £27.

I generally wear jeans in the winter with Chelsea boots or knee high boots and a thick jumper in the winter. In the summer I wear floral summer dresses or shorts and t-shirts with trainers.

I do quite like that dark academia look...

Thank you!

Essie274 · 05/04/2024 23:43

I wear plain coloured, loose fitting, midi-dresses pretty much every day - not very practical in the rain, but fine for all other weathers (bare legs in summer, wool tights in winter) and just easy to throw on and look presentable (I really don't have the body for leggings). Wool jumpers/cardigans for layering under/over in the winter, linen or cotton shirts in spring. Usually with trainers - boots when its wet/cold, sandals when it's warm.

I think the OP means your own personal "mum uniform" , as in, what you wear when you're on "mum duty" - I don't think she means that she's trying to look like all the other mums or to fit some stereotype. She's asking what you wear when you are just doing mum things, rather than say dropping off kids on the way to work or sport.

I like this turn of phrase because I use it too in my own head, for example I think of my work clothes as my "work uniform" even though I'm completely free to wear what I like at work, and I have a "DIY uniform ". It's just a way of thinking about those clothes I've chosen specifically for work or DIY or the park or whatever. In my case I've given myself a work uniform that's entirely black and white because I hate choice in the morning. I genuinely love all my work clothes and spent a fair bit of money on them, but I still consider them a "uniform" and don't usually wear them for social occasions.

I’m clearly not your target audience as I’ve worn Jext as a teen, in my 20s, 30s and 40s. Not sure what’s supposed to be old about it.

I’ve bought stuff from Boden for years, what’s wrong with it

JP123459 · 06/04/2024 00:00

High waisted mini skirt with a bodycon top underneath with thick black tights and black Doc Martens. High waisted mom jeans with a nice belt .. Floral mini dresses with leather jacket and thick black tights and Doc Martens again .. Love my DMs. Always have my silver hoops in, feel naked without them and my silver rings too.

I have lived in these since I got pregnant and just bought another three pairs as I accept them as my fate now as ongoing mummy wear.

MooseBreath · 06/04/2024 00:12

Skinny jeans or thick leggings and a T-shirt, Docs, leather jacket in the autumn and spring, coat in winter. All practical and comfortable.

OnGoldenPond · 06/04/2024 01:03

I just carried on wearing the same clothes as I wore before having DC as I was already into slob chic Grin

Lululemon and a baseball cap.

A baseball cap?!

You know anyone wearing one over the age of 14 looks like they are cerebrally challenged.

Leave them to early teenagers, baseball players and American tourists.

Trouble is, as I know all too well myself, is that once you start wearing slob chic, it's very difficult to go back to anything else.

But the comfort of slob chic is a beautiful thing.

I know, I'm no professional or sportswoman but I certainly wouldn't want to think of my clothes as a 'mum uniform', I can't think of anything worse than wearing a uniform on a daily basis.
