AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

Wow, lots of replies and pretty much unanimous 😂
The seller got back to me and agreed to let it go for £260! I’ve bought it!
I have a confession though, it was a ring not a necklace. I was super paranoid someone would find it and buy it! Sorry anyone who went looking on EBay, you were on wild goose chase. The rest of the story is true though!
I’m a bit nervous to share the photo, to most people it’s probably not that exciting looking, so don’t be too disappointed… 😂 however, I really love it and the photos don’t do it justice. In real life it’s gorgeous. Anything I’ve found similar is either far more expensive or not quite what I was looking for.

yay!!!! really really delighted to hear it

I am a shameless buyer of fancy shoes 🤦🏼‍♀️ I don’t even try to justify them anymore … they’re just my weakness! I have a cull every so often and give them to friends or donate them so the joy carries through. I think your new piece of jewellery is fab. I hope you have years of enjoyment wearing it 💖

If you’ve wanted it for so long it wouldn’t be an impulse purchase that you might regret. You could always sell it if you change your mind.

Lovely ring! Congratulations on all countsSmile I totally agree with @Pipsquiggle, wear it all the time and don't "save it for best"!

ShoesShoesShoesAndMaybeMoreShoes · 05/04/2024 18:50

Oh I posted too soon. Re saving for best, I was just going to say I LOVE shoes and always bought my "good" shoes on the basis of every day wear, rather than saving for best (to also justify cost per wear Grin)

Now I have a disease/disability that means I can't walk unaided anymore, let alone wear heels. I am currently lying on my bed wearing purple PJs and my nude Bianca Louboutins Grin (my DH helps me put on/take off) and I am getting great pleasure from admiring them even lying down. My DDs borrow (and will inherit) all my shoes and I've told them not to worry about scuffs etc as they are there to be worn not wasted.

I'm so glad you bought the ring! My toe nails are also painted coral!

pollymere · 05/04/2024 20:15

Sometimes these things are important to remember that you are your own person. Not a Mum or a Wife. I have a very expensive piece of jewellery that I bought when my DH reminded me I didn't need permission to buy things and that I shouldn't wait to have it for an anniversary gift but buy it for this reason.

Newmum110 · 05/04/2024 20:31

Absolutely love that ring, worth every penny

@Weetabixagain I think it's a lovely ring! Congratulations! Edited, since you did mention what stone it is. I would not have guessed coral. So pretty!

I bought recently some vintage shoes in a vintage clothes shop, probably 1950s, French, a very very pale almost white blue and very delicate trim with a delicate heel, look hardly worn! Not sure I’d ever wear them but they’re so pretty.

My dream is to find shoes from the 1920s which I’ve seen described in a novel I’ve read where they have a jewelled heel. Novel is called Taking Chances by Molly Keane (M J Farrell). She describes clothes in all her novels in a wonderful way but especially in that book.

I regret buying some diamond stud earrings from a very good young independent jeweller who then moved business. I did get a nice engraved ID bracelet in gold for my 21st birthday from there though and a diamond pendant. The earrings were such a good price and well made though.

(I’ve got diamond screw back studs now, don’t wear them much as don’t like colour of them).

Thanks all!
To answer a few questions, it was £250 in the shop (closing down sale price), but I like it so much I’m willing to pay the additional £50.
It’s ‘but it now’ and unfortunately, the seller doesn’t give the option to make an offer.
I don’t want to put a photo on just in case someone on here likes it too and buys it 😂that alone tells me I should just go for it.
I can’t tell how long the eBay listing has been up, but it was sold by the auction house in January.
The guilt is real though, maternity leave is an expensive time, there’s always something else to be buying/ spending money on! And £300 is a lot of money for me.
Buuut I think you are all convincing me of what to do 😂

Send the seller a cheeky offer, times are hard for most people at the moment, they might sell it for what you first saw it for- you can only ask! Good luck 🤞

contact the buyer I meant to say

Let’s face it, it’s unlikely to go down in value, so convert your savings into an asset that can be sold for at least what you paid for it, if you need to, in future!

AdoraBell · 06/04/2024 11:13

Looks gorgeous, I’m glad you bought it OP

BusterGonad · 06/04/2024 11:25

That is beautiful. I'm a sucker for pearls.

Zoomattheinn · 06/04/2024 12:19

Congratulations OP. I think you have not only bought a beautiful ring, you have got yourself a bargain.
the gold price is at an all time high of c$2300 a (Troy) ounce. It has rise 15% this year and it is predicted to go to $2500 this year. The geopolitical situation, a strong US economy and high demand from India and China is pushing the price higher.
if it is 18 carat it will have the mark 750 in the hallmark and there are two diamonds whose total carat will also be marked on the inside of the ring. 0.3 or some such depending on size and weight. I don’t think a jeweller would be able to source that ring wholesale for much less that £260 and possibly more. Look after the coral as per PP. Enjoy your wonderful find.
