AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

Can you just ‘watch it’ or no….

I would think it’s a bargain for £300 - price of gold has gone up. It’s an investment.
Buy the necklace, just buy some cheaper make up/clothes if needed. I think you mentioned it’s coming out of that fund?

Very good point about the price of gold. I’ll use that one to justify it to the husband 😂 he’s always banging on about investing 😂😂

I'm normally pretty frugal, but as you've been thinking about it for ages, I say go for it - don't let it slip though your fingers again! Especially as maternity leave isn't the most glamorous time 😀
You could always plan to sell on your maternity/baby clothes to recoup some of the cost?

Tel12 · 04/04/2024 14:12

You can message the seller with your offer. No harm in asking.

LetItGoHome · 04/04/2024 14:12

I probably wouldn't spend that much on a necklace whilst on mat leave. But then again you might have loads more money than me. So only you can answer this question unless you are prepared to be much more open about your finances! 🙈😂

Could you ask for it as a birthday gift from a partner or group family gift? It can be kept on one side until the big day. My husband would be delighted to be tipped off on a gift he could get me. Especially one I'd love so much.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/04/2024 14:14

Yes get it. If you can afford it then why not? Are you linked on Ebay with your Nectar card (if you have one)? It all adds up.

Can we see the necklace when it's safely with its new owner please? Grin

Buy it. Have you a pic? But buy it. Now

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 04/04/2024 14:15

Lol @Weetabixagain it sounds like fate! You have both the means and the justification now!😊

merryandbrightdelight · 04/04/2024 14:15

But it! And please show us a picture I'm quite excited to see it 🤣

Peridot1 · 04/04/2024 14:16

Can you suggest to your DH that you buy it now but it’s for your birthday. Or Christmas. Or both.

My DH hates shopping so is normally very happy when I help him out by doing his shopping for him!

its2024 · 04/04/2024 14:16

I must admit I'm a nosy bugger and just looked at eBay for necklaces going for £300 with no best offer. Couldn't guess which one it is but there's a interesting green one with 28 watchers, if it's that one it's certainly unique, and I don't think it's that one but if it is YABU

Overthebow · 04/04/2024 14:18

mat leave is only a short time and you’ll be back to earning soon. If you have a decent income, financially stable and a household savings buffer in case anything goes wrong then buy it. I’m on mat leave too and still spending as normal, I can more than make up for it when I’m back at work.

Cherrysoup · 04/04/2024 14:19

Buy it. I massively regret not buying a beautiful carved bed because we didn’t need it, but could have sold our then bed. Still regret it 25 years later!

mynewname0324 · 04/04/2024 14:19

Buy it!
I really wanted a McQueen/Damien Hirst collab scarf when I was on mat leave but decided it was too extravagant when I wasn't earning. I regret it to this day (well over a decade ago).

You loved it enough to find it again after the shop closed. You're meant to have it & make savings in other ways. Smile

fancyfrogs · 04/04/2024 14:21

Buy it then show us it Grin

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/04/2024 14:23

Have you bought it yet? Grin

its2024 · 04/04/2024 14:25

Ok ignore me, I missed the 18k gold bit so it's not the green shrimp on ebay!

Prinnny · 04/04/2024 14:25

What’s that saying..never give up something you can’t go a day without thinking of..

I’d email the seller asking if they’ll take £250, shy bairns get nowt, if they say no just buy it anyway!

I’ve just done a search to match that criteria and I’m guessing you’re looking a shrimp necklace? 😂 if you are, no it’s not that one. Not to my taste 😆 It’s hilarious though. Whoever buys that, I want to be their friend.

Buy it.

In years to come you will look at it and think of it as a gift to yourself for carrying and birthing your baby.

A lovely reminder of a special time of life. Life’s too short for regrets.

Weetabixagain · 04/04/2024 14:09

I technically can afford it, it just feels very extravagant for someone on maternity leave 😂 if I was at work I’d probably just buy it.

To answer your question, I had walked past it dozens of times and I was always drawn to it. That and I’m massively stubborn and was really annoyed at myself the first time round for missing the chance to buy it.

You risk missing the chance a second time, if you don't get a move on.

its2024 · 04/04/2024 14:30

@Weetabixagain yep it's the shrimp but I missed you said 18k gold. Cant believe that one has 28 watches, perhaps they watching thinking who the hell would buy that

timefornewme2023 · 04/04/2024 14:33

Buy the necklace !

noctilucentcloud · 04/04/2024 14:37

I agree with others who've suggested buying it now and asking if it can be a birthday/christmas/both present from one or more people. That might ease your guilt? (Which I also get, but if you can afford it and love it and will use it then I think there's nothing wrong with buying it for yourself)

DollyBantry · 04/04/2024 14:38

Buy it! I just splurged on some beautiful earrings that I had been coveting for aaaages and always thought “nope, I shouldn’t, I mustn’t …”
They are honestly making me so happy just wearing them and seeing them in the mirror as I pass by, my kids have actually noticed them and complimented me on them (amazing!) so it’s totally worth not having a few other treats for a few months just to justify the splurge.
Go for it!
