AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

I bought a beige leather jacket on mat leave 22 years ago and I never regretted it, and in fact often thought how glad I was that I bought it then, when I could afford it, as once the kids grow everything becomes more expensive and catered around their needs! I say go for it, then share the picture so we can see how pretty it is!

Mummasals · 06/04/2024 22:07

Quite frankly I think that you’re an utter sod…..how many people are now on ebay trying to find themselves a new piece of jewellery that evokes a response like this ring did in you! Hope you’re happy 😝 enjoy your new ring - you sacrifice a lot as a new mum, you rarely splurge on yourself so wear it with pride and as a reminder that you are worth the odd treat!

Wow, lots of replies and pretty much unanimous 😂
The seller got back to me and agreed to let it go for £260! I’ve bought it!
I have a confession though, it was a ring not a necklace. I was super paranoid someone would find it and buy it! Sorry anyone who went looking on EBay, you were on wild goose chase. The rest of the story is true though!
I’m a bit nervous to share the photo, to most people it’s probably not that exciting looking, so don’t be too disappointed… 😂 however, I really love it and the photos don’t do it justice. In real life it’s gorgeous. Anything I’ve found similar is either far more expensive or not quite what I was looking for.

Yay I'm so happy for you. I hate the remorse of not buying something. I missed a good deal on something I wanted last year, have stubbornly refused to pay twice as much and still don't have the item nor am I likely to without biting the bullet any paying more. It's a gorgeous ring, congratulations on your new treasure!

My husband is an auctioneer with a specialism in jewellery and he said you’ve got a good price 😘

Thanks all!
To answer a few questions, it was £250 in the shop (closing down sale price), but I like it so much I’m willing to pay the additional £50.
It’s ‘but it now’ and unfortunately, the seller doesn’t give the option to make an offer.
I don’t want to put a photo on just in case someone on here likes it too and buys it 😂that alone tells me I should just go for it.
I can’t tell how long the eBay listing has been up, but it was sold by the auction house in January.
The guilt is real though, maternity leave is an expensive time, there’s always something else to be buying/ spending money on! And £300 is a lot of money for me.
Buuut I think you are all convincing me of what to do 😂

Totally different thing, but my son wanted some golf clubs which were buy it now with no options for an offer, I messaged the seller and we agreed a price and he sent me the offer in ebay, so it can be done. Good luck, buy the necklace you clearly love it

Well done, OP

I used to collect a certain category of thing, and it was really cut~throat scene.

New people to the scene were trusting enough to ask things like ''I've seen an XYZ on Ebay, Is it an {insert maker's name}...and the more experienced would be straight onto it, putting offers in if the thing was any good.

One woman said she asked a fellow collector if an item was any good, and that she was going to think about it and buy it after putting her daughter to bed...and guess what.. this prompted the person she'd told to buy it out from under her.

Play your cards very close to your chest in any collecting scene.

Jewellery I know noting about, but that seems a very fair price if those are natural diamonds and flash in the sun.

I'm glad you got it!

oakleaffy · 06/04/2024 23:25

@Weetabixagain I REALLLY regret not buying a screen print for £35 of a policeman smoking a spliff.
It was signed BANKSY in pencil, from Greenleaf Bookshop, Bristol, in 1996 or 7

The cost of framing would have been another £35.

Those early screen prints sell for over £25,000 now.

Someone who bought a few sold them and bought a house in Bath CASH.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Banksy was unknown then.

Tremour · 06/04/2024 23:25

Just buy it and take it from the money you were going to spent on some clothes

cleareyesofbrown · 07/04/2024 00:11

Pleased you have your ring OP, I do admit that I was hoping you wouldn’t post a picture or link to your necklace, as I assumed someone else would buy it out of sheer spite.

Happy there is a nice end to the story

Its beautiful 😊

Ruthietuthie · 07/04/2024 00:18

Well, it's lovely! Enjoy wearing it.

Sasqwatch · 07/04/2024 00:24

msg the seller and ask if they’ll accept an offer. It’s worth a shot.

Sasqwatch · 07/04/2024 00:26

See you’ve got it, hurray.

DodoTired · 07/04/2024 00:30

go for it. A necklace can make an outfit and you can wear it forever with different pieces

JohnSt1 · 07/04/2024 01:19

It's not a lot of money if you can manage it. I think you were right to buy it.

Snead808 · 07/04/2024 02:05

If you can afford it, buy it!! You're already regretting not having bought it in store, so you obviously really want it. Also, you have just had a baby so definitely deserve a treat that's just for you. Get it and enjoy!

Crispsandcola · 07/04/2024 02:20

You should definitely buy it. Look at it as an investment/future heirloom if it makes you feel better. I don't like seeing money being thrown away on pointless fashion items but I love the idea of you cherishing and enjoying this item for years to come - go for it.

Dartwarbler · 07/04/2024 08:13

MSE advice….depends on what you earn and how you feel about that…

Justify the purchase by shopping at op. shops for your own clothing for a while.

You can still send the seller a message making an offer AFAIK. Some sellers don't like you doing this.

Viviennemary · 07/04/2024 09:05

I missed the update? Good you got the ring.

zingally · 07/04/2024 10:08

I'm glad it was a ring, and not a necklace - and that you didn't post a photo until the deal was done!
If you'd posted a picture, some meany would have reverse-image searched it and bought it. Purely to be nasty, but telling themselves "it was just too nice to turn down!" I never fail to be astounded by the petty meanness of other people.

I'm glad you got it OP! It's a lovely ring and that pink stone is so pretty - and I agree, very unique! I hope you get many years of joy from it. :)

Todaywasbetter · 07/04/2024 10:38

I salute you

pitterypattery00 · 07/04/2024 10:48

I'm glad you bought it OP - it's so easy to fritter away money on things that mean nothing to us or on disposable things whereas you'll have this and it will bring you joy forever.

Around 20 years ago I had similar angst about buying a bag that I adored. Looked at it in the department store several times over months before finally deciding to go for it. I was a student at the time and at £45 it was a small fortune to me. But I went on to use that bag regularly for about 15 years (til it finally wore out!) and I never stopped loving it. Used to get so many compliments on it and I was really proud to own it. I hope your ring brings similar joy!

Kasperber · 07/04/2024 11:15

I’m so pleased you got it OP. Enjoy wearing it. It’s beautiful. Things you fall in love with that are one-offs, I think you should get while you can if you can afford to. It’s not always about price. I’ve bought an old ceramic tile , a mad looking cuddly toy cat and a small picture I love. They bring me pleasure every day. There’s so much sadness, suffering and general shittiness in this world so grab anything that you love and will make you happy I say.
