AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

Well done OP! I also love vintage rings and I have looked at the rings from that seller before, they are pretty reasonablely priced. Besides those fine jewllery items do hold vaule much better than other things like shoes or clothing. I have bought a few rings recently and the last one was £300. I was so pleased with it and every time I looked at it it just made me smile, so definitely worth it.

It’s a very pretty ring!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/04/2024 22:32

umm that's a very different necklace :)

meant to say, I thought the seller would come back with a counter offer of £275

awopbopaloobopawopbamboom · 04/04/2024 22:37

Yay!! It's gorgeous!! I've decided you need a matching blazer to wear with that to debut your new ring.

Zarah786 · 04/04/2024 22:48

Buy it and put an extra £25 back into savings every month, for a year, to build that £300 back up.

Notmollybutdolly · 04/04/2024 22:50

OP I love it !! So nice !

Peridot1 · 04/04/2024 22:57

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/04/2024 23:02

Was the ring the right size for you, OP? If so, it was definitely meant to be. I'm glad you bought it.

BirthdayRainbow · 04/04/2024 23:06

That shrimp necklace is terrifying !

Daffodilsandtuplips · 04/04/2024 23:34

Buy it, it’s an investment. You can always sell it if the bailiffs come knocking, I sold some old jewellery last year to jewellers shop that bought old gold, odd earrings, broken necklaces, curb chains, etc, it was just all in a box sitting there. he offered me 800 quid. He was very fair, could have ripped me off as I hadn’t realised there was a 22ct gold wedding ring of my aunts among it all, I thought it was 9ct.It was quite heavy, he said it was solid gold and not hollow. He offered me £100 for that alone! I nearly fell off the chair in shock. I thought I’d be lucky to get £500.
Oops, missed your update I’m pleased you bought it. Very unusual but I lie it.

Dencar · 05/04/2024 00:40

Push present for yourself - buy it!
You deserve it.

RobertaFirmino · 05/04/2024 00:45

Ooh, you need a nail polish that matches the stone!

DarkDarkNight · 05/04/2024 00:47

Buy it, you obviously love it. Then please post a screenshot of the necklace as I want to see it now.

Oops, I’ve seen the ring now. Very pretty.

kkloo · 05/04/2024 00:56

Delighted you bought it! It will bring you lots of little moments of joy.

I saw a Ted talk a while back about where we find joy in life and it was mainly talking about fun architecture and interior design as far as I recall but it was talking about how we get joy from things like that and they all add up over time or during our day.

I'm not a jewellery person but I have other stuff that I normally wouldn't have bought because they're expensive but I just really wanted them and they do bring me lots of little bits of joy through the day like my favourite blanket on my bed or a really pretty mug etc. I always appreciate them.

It is coral, yes

I LOVE coral and diamond. So glad you got it. I had a similar anguished watch and wait relationship with a coral and diamond ring, and bought it. Have never regretted it for a moment. It’s brought me to much pleasure.

MsAmerica · 05/04/2024 02:46

This is generally a minority opinion, but I generally wouldn't spend that much on jewelry unless it's antique. When you buy new jewelry, it loses value the minute it's yours.

dontcryformeargentina · 05/04/2024 04:08

Good purchase. Coral, diamonds and 18k gold. The gold prices will only go up. You've made the right decision.
