AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

Do it........... you can afford it, you love it, you've thought about it and admired it for years, and wear it every day when you do. Not everything in life has to be about denying yourself the small pleasures that make you feel good!

Inyourwildestdreams · 05/04/2024 05:15

A lovely purchase @Weetabixagain 😊 So glad you got it!

I always think if you see something and you’re still thinking about it later or going to the lengths of trying to hunt it (or similar) down then you know it’s something you really want 😊 and the fact you found it…it’s meant to be. It would have been rude of you not to buy it really 😅

If you have any guilt about the cost (which you shouldn’t!) then do what I do and have a small wardrobe clear out and stick a few bits on Vinted 😊

OneSeriousPerson · 05/04/2024 05:27

I really want that shrimp now 🫣

isthismylifenow · 05/04/2024 05:58

Oh that ring is gorgeous.

The shrimp necklace on the other hand....

Trickedbyadoughnut · 05/04/2024 06:28

Lovely, congratulations! Definitely an investment piece 👌

Mouthfulofquiz · 05/04/2024 06:57

@Daffodilsandtuplips £100 for a 22ct ring? He’ll be keeping that to sell on for about £400 I expect.

malificent7 · 05/04/2024 07:00

I love the shrimp necklace!

Thanks all!
To answer a few questions, it was £250 in the shop (closing down sale price), but I like it so much I’m willing to pay the additional £50.
It’s ‘but it now’ and unfortunately, the seller doesn’t give the option to make an offer.
I don’t want to put a photo on just in case someone on here likes it too and buys it 😂that alone tells me I should just go for it.
I can’t tell how long the eBay listing has been up, but it was sold by the auction house in January.
The guilt is real though, maternity leave is an expensive time, there’s always something else to be buying/ spending money on! And £300 is a lot of money for me.
Buuut I think you are all convincing me of what to do 😂

Add it to your 'Watch list' or put it in your basket... then wait a few days. Some sellers will make you an offer.

Otherwise you should buy it - or you'll feel the regret for ever! 😀

Op, it's beautiful and unique. You deserve it, enjoy.

RedSuedePump · 05/04/2024 07:54

it’s a gorgeous ring. wear it and enjoy it! x

RosyappleA · 05/04/2024 07:55

Beautiful ring OP.
I do believe jewellery calls us sometimes, I remember losing a stone on my engagement ring and having a miscarriage. I always felt it was a bad sign.

Anyway I have been looking at some gold stud earrings as I am tired of getting new silver ones every so often and cleaning them so they aren’t so dull and this thread has convinced me to buy them!

Clarefromwork · 05/04/2024 07:57

If you haven’t brought a pram yet I would say try and get a good second hand one or just not spend loads on one. We spent about £1000 on a travel system one which I wouldn’t do again (got carried away I think!) and you could easily make a saving there to justify the ring!

NoBunnyHome · 05/04/2024 08:12

There is no sense of satisfacton and joy like that of getting a 2nd chance at a much coveted item - and securing it.

Nice ring, OP.

Is coral ethical?

Is coral ethical?

🙄The item exists. She isn't sending children to mine for it. Surely the best thing to do is honour the piece rather than have it harvested for nothing as it sits hidden away somewhere.

BirthdayRainbow · 05/04/2024 08:43

Don't rain on her parade. She's happy with the £800 she got.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 05/04/2024 09:08

It is a beautiful ring. I have something similar, but with two smaller coral stones.

Do be aware that coral needs to be carefully looked after. No hot water, hand lotion, you can't ultrasonically clean it. Keep the ring out of direct sunlight when not being worn

That being said, I have a coral pendant that is over 150 years old that is still is lovely condition.

Is coral ethical?

Some species are endangered and cannot be legally imported into the UK. However, unlike ivory, there is no restriction on the sake and purchase of coral products within the UK.

Should you buy coral? I don’t buy new coral to use in jewellery but I do buy secondhand jewellery to take apart and re-use the beads. It goes really well with pearls and I’d rather reuse a broken necklace than have it end up in landfill. I consider waste to be more unethical.

It’s a very pretty ring

CurlewKate · 05/04/2024 10:08

Buy it- then post a picture.

dottydodah · 05/04/2024 10:24

Daffodilsandtulips I got £30 .00 for a broken gold chain!

Thank you: it was a genuine query as you don’t see much of it about anymore. So I was curious and appreciate your taking the time to answer 🙏🏻

notanoxfordcomma · 05/04/2024 10:35

Ahhh I am so pleased for you OP! Enjoy that beautiful ring and the rest of your mat leave!!

Pipsquiggle · 05/04/2024 10:41

Lovely. Well done.

Wear it all the time - don't just use it 'for best.' Your price per wear will be paid back with a few months.

Fireangels · 05/04/2024 10:59

It’s lovely, and will always remind you of when you had your baby. I have a ring from each of the births of my babies. When I had my eldest daughter my husband gave me a ring with aquamarine stones. That daughter gets married this year and it will be her ‘something borrowed/blue’ on her wedding day 💕
