AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

If you can afford it, then buy it.

yutu · 04/04/2024 13:32

Do you have enough saving to buy it? If so I d say go for it, its not you would find something £300 to buy every month.

RavenswoodFalls · 04/04/2024 13:34

Buy it if you can afford it. You can always put it back on eBay if you change your mind.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 04/04/2024 13:36

How much was the shop originally selling it for?

blackoverbillsmothers · 04/04/2024 13:37

Buy it or you’ll regret it. Do you have a photo of it?

FleaDog · 04/04/2024 13:39

Contact seller with a lower offer, negotiate a bargain?

PossumintheHouse · 04/04/2024 13:39

If you have savings specifically for clothes and make up, I don't see why you can't deviate a bit and buy a piece of forever jewellery. You've already spent too much time regretting not buying it the first time, by the sound of things.
You could always ask the eBay seller if they're open to a slightly lower offer. How long has it been for sale?

JosiePosey · 04/04/2024 13:42

I voted YABU for all the nonsense about guilt. If you like it, have the funds for it, want it, then just buy it.

desperatedaysareover · 04/04/2024 13:42

you deserve nice things

AIBU to buy the necklace?

Photo please. Does it have a BIN or offers option?

Can you afford it? If you can then buy it.

If you can't then.....don't.

You say that things are tight at the moment so i probably wouldn't buy it (but, i am Mrs Frugal)!!

But, i assume that if you have a budget set aside for clothes and make-up then you could probably easily afford it.

Go for it!

K0OLA1D · 04/04/2024 13:50

If you can afford then go for it. Is ebay selling it cheaper?

I'd love to see a picture.

Weetabixagain · 04/04/2024 13:56

Thanks all!
To answer a few questions, it was £250 in the shop (closing down sale price), but I like it so much I’m willing to pay the additional £50.
It’s ‘but it now’ and unfortunately, the seller doesn’t give the option to make an offer.
I don’t want to put a photo on just in case someone on here likes it too and buys it 😂that alone tells me I should just go for it.
I can’t tell how long the eBay listing has been up, but it was sold by the auction house in January.
The guilt is real though, maternity leave is an expensive time, there’s always something else to be buying/ spending money on! And £300 is a lot of money for me.
Buuut I think you are all convincing me of what to do 😂

Buy it.
If the money is for clothes and make up it doesn't sound like you're struggling to pay bills. It's spare money. So you'll wear your old clothes and wait a bit for more make up. Sounds fine.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 04/04/2024 13:58

Buy it and then show us a picture 😄

Februaryfeels · 04/04/2024 13:59

Life is too short not to buy it

And wear it

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 04/04/2024 13:59

Buy it. Save by not spending elsewhere.

It doesn't matter that there isn't the 'Make an offer' option. You can still politely message the seller and ask if they would accept, say, £250. I've done it successfully several times. Some sellers can't be bothered with Make an Offer because buyers can take the piss and waste their time with ridiculous low balls.

Don't buy it if you cant afford to spend £300 on a necklace.

Why are you fixated on this particular piece?

FUBAR77 · 04/04/2024 14:05

Putting it simply,if you buy it on your deathbed you won’t regret it and if you don’t buy it you will regret it for years

This made me laugh. You’re so right 😂

Put it your watch list. Invariably when I do this I get a 'special offer' discount email through at a reduced price. I bet that will happen to you

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 04/04/2024 14:08

You've regretted not buying it so much you've been searching for one like it so just buy it.

I technically can afford it, it just feels very extravagant for someone on maternity leave 😂 if I was at work I’d probably just buy it.

To answer your question, I had walked past it dozens of times and I was always drawn to it. That and I’m massively stubborn and was really annoyed at myself the first time round for missing the chance to buy it.

Can you just ‘watch it’ or no….

I would think it’s a bargain for £300 - price of gold has gone up. It’s an investment.
Buy the necklace, just buy some cheaper make up/clothes if needed. I think you mentioned it’s coming out of that fund?
