AIBU to buy the necklace?

A jewellery shop local to me closed down late last year. There was a gorgeous necklace in the window that I’d been looking at for ages, but I didn’t buy it. It was really unique looking and Ive never seen another like it. But at the time, I didn’t think I could justify spending that much on myself.
Since the shop has shut I’ve had major regret about not buying it. So much so that I started googling and looking around for another necklace similar, when lo and behold, I’ve found the exact necklace on eBay! I did some searching around on sold catalogs for auction houses and it looks like the shop sold off some of its stock since they were shutting down, and it’s ended up with another seller who has put it on eBay.
However, it’s £300. I’m currently on maternity leave, so things are tight at the moment.
I have savings I’ve been keeping for clothes and makeup, but I feel guilty spending that amount in one go. However, I know I’ll be so sad if someone else buys it! It’s the sort of item I’d keep forever (18k gold).
I feel like I’ve been give a second chance to buy it!

Would I be unreasonable to buy it?? Help!

I’m so glad you’re going for it (may be overly invested in this thread). Life’s too short and if you can afford it why not? I’ve had similar dilemmas before about buying something, largely due to an upbringing where any type of spending was frowned upon. The things I’ve taken the plunge with have brought such joy that I don’t regret it for a moment. Fingers crossed you get it but I think you deserve to splurge.

I bought an expensive bracelet that I dithered about for months. It was expensive ( for me) and like you I felt I couldn't justify it.

20 years later its still my favourite piece of jewellery!

Flopsy145 · 04/04/2024 16:01

Please post a pic when you have paid for it 😂

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/04/2024 16:02

I still pine after a picture I didn't buy over five years ago. Some things just speak to you.

Same. Two pieces of artwork I fell in love with. By the time I went back they were gone. This thread has been triggering. 😂
I also really regret not buying a hand-carved bed covered with woodland animals. Every so often I'll look on eBay and other selling websites.

pavedwithgoodintentions · 04/04/2024 16:10

Good luck with the seller!

26 years ago when I first started work I saw a ring in a jewellers which I loved on first sight, and each time I walked past I had to stop and have a look at it. Nothing fancy but quite distinctive. When I changed jobs a few years later I didn't walk past that jewellers any more and forgot about the ring. 2 years ago I was pottering on ebay and saw the ring again. I bought it. I love my ring.

Ah, the things that get away... For me it was a red bag in a hippy shop in Whitby when I was a young teen. It had been cut (probably when a stock box was opened) so needed a big repair and was very very cheap - I convinced myself that the person on the till would think I couldn't do it myself (I could have) and got myself so twisted in knots that I bought a deep blue Spectacular nail polish instead. It went goopy and I still think about the bag. I do get attached to objects though 😆 people would buy and sell woven wraps for sometimes more than £300 when I had my son. I was on a tight budget but did buy and sell a couple (not at that price!!) and I still have one beautiful one. It's not getting used (involuntarily one and done here) but I still love that I have it.

Muses about an idea for a thread, about "The object/ thing that I wish I had bought, and now regret not doing so".😁

I think it might make me sad!!

LadyKenya · 04/04/2024 16:29

Oh sorry@Grumblevision🌸I know that I have kicked myself a couple of times, when I have not bought something, for one reason, or another, and have not forgotten about it, and have not been able to find anything like it again.

It doesn't matter that there isn't the 'Make an offer' option. You can still politely message the seller and ask if they would accept, say, £250. I've done it successfully several times. Some sellers can't be bothered with Make an Offer because buyers can take the piss and waste their time with ridiculous low balls.

this. I have made offers and had offers made to me by message. Some I have accepted and some not, some have been accepted by the seller and some not. I have never been offended by being asked and have always had polite responses from sellers.

godmum56 · 04/04/2024 16:39

for me its the stupidest thing, a really large amethyst solitaire on qvc. Total bargain and I still regret it.

Weetabixagain · 04/04/2024 16:40

Still waiting on a reply from the seller…
All the stories of the objects that got away are making me even more sure I’ll buy it, whatever the seller comes back with!

Gowlett · 04/04/2024 16:53

I bought myself a a ring in a jewellers closing down sale (they’re still open!) for the same price as your necklace. I love it.

BusyCaz · 04/04/2024 16:58

I have had a look and think I know which it is, does it have a pearl? If it is it's beautiful, good luck on the offer x

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/04/2024 17:08

It's the hologram pendant of Yoda isn't it OP? 🤣

dottiedodah · 04/04/2024 17:09

I would most certainly buy it .Every time you see it, it will remind you of your baby.Think of it as a maternity gift to you from you!

thesleepyhoglet · 04/04/2024 17:12

Weetabixagain · 04/04/2024 13:56

Thanks all!
To answer a few questions, it was £250 in the shop (closing down sale price), but I like it so much I’m willing to pay the additional £50.
It’s ‘but it now’ and unfortunately, the seller doesn’t give the option to make an offer.
I don’t want to put a photo on just in case someone on here likes it too and buys it 😂that alone tells me I should just go for it.
I can’t tell how long the eBay listing has been up, but it was sold by the auction house in January.
The guilt is real though, maternity leave is an expensive time, there’s always something else to be buying/ spending money on! And £300 is a lot of money for me.
Buuut I think you are all convincing me of what to do 😂

Message the seller directly and explain you'd like to buy for £250

300 quid for THAT. And it's only 'small'. 😂

RogueFemale · 04/04/2024 17:13

@Weetabixagain I can’t tell how long the eBay listing has been up, but it was sold by the auction house in January.

If you do a very specific search for the item and sort by 'newest first' it'll give the date the listing started.

Whatwouldnanado · 04/04/2024 17:38

It’s less than a pound a day for a year’s wear. Go for it and enjoy wearing it, don’t keep it for best.

Goodadvice1980 · 04/04/2024 17:39

Oh crikey! This is bringing back memories of the house I regret not buying in the 1990’s 😂🏠

Whatifthehokeycokey · 04/04/2024 17:43

If it's not going to put you in debt or make you feel guilty, but rather is going to bring you joy, do it.
