As the title says really, Aibu to think shouting out in agony due to leg cramp in the middle of the night is somewhat over the top?
Dh did this last night and I thought something was seriously wrong! I've had cramp myself and usually quietly stretch out or sometimes stand to sort it, certainly don't shout out in pain.
But I am prepared to admit I'm bu if others have had it much more severely than I have, I've just never heard of it being that bad.

Calf cramp is literally the worst pain I've ever felt. Maybe some people get it worse than others, so you can't sympathise with your husband. I don't scream my head off or anything, but I'm not in control of myself and know I do make noise and swear. So no, I don't think people loudly reacting to a cramp is over the top.

(I realise that's pathetic and I'm lucky not to have had worse!)

ginasevern · 03/04/2024 16:59

Until last year I thought calf cramp was another level of pain, until I got camp in both hamstrings. Jesus Christ, enough said.

TheDefiant · 03/04/2024 17:04

Having seen the horrible movements of a leg in cramp I can totally understand why shouting at night and wakening someone up can happen.

Have you no empathy?

I woke my DH up in agony with cramps when pregnant.

It's awful pain.

If it's a leg cramp running cold water over the foot can really help.

Createausername1970 · 03/04/2024 17:11

Oh yes! My DH sleeps through it, but it not unusual for me to rocket out of bed in the middle of the night, clutching my calf and/or thigh (when both go together its agony) shouting FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCK at the top of my voice, and walking round the room still clutching and vigorously rubbing the affected area. If I startle the dog, she joins in.

But DS still snoozes on, completely unaware.

justasking111 · 03/04/2024 17:14

Yes during pregnancy. I would sit on the edge of the bath running the shower head over my calf. Awful. Never had them that bad since.

MoreCandles · 03/04/2024 17:16

But when you have cramp really badly you cannot help screaming

I get it so bad I shout out in shock. I've trained myself to shout "Cramp! Cramp!"
so that family members know exactly what's going on and don't panic.

Dh has done this to me a number of times. I have had cramp myself, so I know it is really painful, but being woken up from a deep sleep like that is a pretty shocking experience. If the person is awake when the cramp strikes, they should be able to control themselves and not shriek at the top of their voice, but if it happens while they are asleep, it may be too much to expect them to keep it quieter.

Incidentally, since dh has been drinking tonic water every day, he hasn’t had any incidents of cramp - I believe that the quinine in the tonic water may have something to do with it.

Inara80 · 03/04/2024 17:22

When I get leg cramps, it is agonising. The pain can come in waves and the muscles are rock solid.

Whilst OP may not experience it that badly; for others it is absolutely awful so sympathy should be forthcoming :-)

I’m with you I’ve had cramp a few times recently ( think I am deficient in something) and it is agony. I quietly drag myself to the top stair and stretch it out. I wouldn’t consider shouting and waking up the house.

Surely nobody is 'considering' screaming and waking other people up. It's a natural reaction 🤷‍♀️

Either you have a higher pain threshold than many of the previous posters, or you haven't experienced cramp bad enough to understand.

DerekFaker · 03/04/2024 17:35

This thread reminds me of the ones about loud sneezing.

"Can't you control it and hold it in or sneeze quietly? I do."

"No, it's physically impossible for me to stifle them."

"Attention seeker!"

Some people really seem to struggle wiith understanding that people are all different.

Have you ever got the pregnancy leg cramps. Horrendous!! And yes I cried out because I thought my leg was going to fall off at one point! So yes YABU

And nobody warned me about that in the pregnancy advice books 🙈

Daniki · 03/04/2024 19:42

@justasking111 I know me either! That should definitely be mentioned 😂

ALongHardWinter · 03/04/2024 19:55

I have occasionally woken my entire household shouting because I have had cramp! It's bad enough in the calf muscle, but in the back of my thigh....😟

I think I don’t deal vocally with pain. I fell and broke my wrist and the loudest thing was the snap. No moaning during labour, in fact I was pretty silent as in too much pain to talk. When my appendix burst they didn’t really believe me/ my mother as not demonstrating enough pain. Until the ultrasound. It’s not a good thing medically as they can’t find veins or get lines in and blood pressure does weird things.

Luckily I’m fairly healthy generally. I wonder if it’s an evolutionary trait in the same way that dogs and cats hide pain. Pretty sure my ancestors would be the quiet limpy members of the tribe who just keep going.

Needanewname42 · 03/04/2024 21:22

Anyone know that science / reason why pregnant women get cramps?

I regularly get cramp in my toes and feet but calfs was a different level of pain. I'd rather give birth than that and yes it ached for days after it

jannier · 03/04/2024 21:33

Depends I've had mild cramp woke me up had to stretch etc. Then I've had full blown shit somebody is stabbing me cramp no way could I suck it up quietly.

Looneytune253 · 03/04/2024 21:34

Ooooh yeah I've had many different cramps but certain midnight calf cramps have me screaming out in agony. YABU

Chatonette · 03/04/2024 21:35

I’ve reacted the same way—it feels like a horse has kicked you in the calf! Used to happen loads when I was pregnant, for some reason.

DearSilverGirl · 03/04/2024 21:37

I think when you wake up with cramp you can end up shouting before you’ve really woken up properly and worked out what is going on.

Londonrach1 · 03/04/2024 21:38

Yabu. Poor guy leg cramps are hell some times. Cool tiled floor and stretching can help. Well do in my case and my dh leg massage

RandomButtons · 03/04/2024 21:38

The middle of the night leg cramps I get are worse than giving birth to my 10lb baby, so he’s not being unreasonable if he’s experiencing the same.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 03/04/2024 21:41

Not sure he’s ever even mentioned having cramp or actually had it.

I only ever get it after a very long flight if I stretch my legs when I go to bed. It’s horrid, but not cry out in pain horrid (for me).

Bambam2019 · 03/04/2024 21:41

Currently pregnant with baby no2 and have had awful leg cramps in both this and last pregnancy. Gets worse the later on in pregnancy I am. First pregnancy my partner woke up in a panic a couple of times when seeing me stomping about the room in pain and grunting (although not shouting out in agony..!) thinking I was in labour!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/04/2024 21:43

I get cramp in my leg if I don't drink enough water, really painful.

Last time I screamed before I even properly woke up.

If he's up weeing a lot and getting cramps in his legs he should see a Dr though.
