Would your partner wake you up shouting due to cramp?

As the title says really, Aibu to think shouting out in agony due to leg cramp in the middle of the night is somewhat over the top?
Dh did this last night and I thought something was seriously wrong! I've had cramp myself and usually quietly stretch out or sometimes stand to sort it, certainly don't shout out in pain.
But I am prepared to admit I'm bu if others have had it much more severely than I have, I've just never heard of it being that bad.

Calf cramp I may not shout

Thigh cramp - well that's like expecting someone in labour to be quiet

But the shout out is instinctive/ reactive not "oh I better wake dh to help "

Bellyblueboy · 03/04/2024 13:31

Depends. I shout in pain from leg cramps occasionally. Sometimes they are just annoying - sometimes the pain is overwhelming. I get dizzy and see stars.

you don’t sound like a particularly sympathetic person. Not everyone experiences the exact same physical symptoms as you!

Gorgonemilezola · 03/04/2024 13:31

DH gets leg cramps at night, very rarely, but he is in agony with them, and tbh anything I can do to help, I would. Cramps can be excruciating - it's why it's so dangerous if you get one while swimming.

Foostit · 03/04/2024 13:32

It depends how bad it is. I’ve had it when it’s so bad that it looks as if your calf has caved in, I definitely screamed!

Toottooot · 03/04/2024 13:33

ginasevern · 03/04/2024 13:24

Yep. I'm a long time cramp sufferer and you cannot "gently stretch" your leg with a full blown attack. The pain in indescribable and yes, I leap out of bed and hobble round the bedroom shouting obscenities.

Then for a good 3-4 days afterwards your leg is still incredibly tender from the cramps and you’re scared of going back to bed incase whatever position your leg is in aggravates it again. And aye, you canna help but scream oot fan it’s that’s bad.

Yes! I've had sudden cramp in a calf only very occasionally. The sudden pain is excruciating and I find myself hammering the calf muscle with my fists to try and reduce the pain. Putting weight on the affected leg is very difficult and the soreness can last for a couple of days, even with pain relieving gel. My sympathies to whoever gets these. 🌹

Exactly how mine is..i can't stand its just holding my breath whilst cursing and shutting my eyes through it....😔😁...so sore for days too xxx

FastFood · 03/04/2024 13:47

Cramps are a thing.
Calf cramps are another one, it's agony.
It generally happens at night and really takes you by surprise so I understand how someone can be quite vocal with them.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 03/04/2024 13:49

As someone who suffers from leg cramp, no I do not. It's nasty at the best of times but if it is bad enough to wake you up, of course you'll yell.

DerekFaker · 03/04/2024 14:00

I think an issue is too, you're probably asleep/half asleep, you move your legs and BOOM! So the pain gives you a shock and wakes you up as well.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 03/04/2024 14:04

I've had it once and as another poster said, it was worse than labour. I also regularly pop my knee, i shout in pain from that too.

I was going to say this. I once got it both thighs at the same time. That was fun. I think that may be linked with mild dehydration.

Cramp can be absolute agony

When I was a teenager I had some really awful ones that made me sit up and yell out from the pain. Luckily I’ve never had them as an adult.

Same here. I suffered dreadfully as a teenager

midgetastic · 03/04/2024 14:15

Fentymans tonic water has quinine which is great if you know cramp might happen - if you know possible triggers for yourself

If it's very regular- doctors may also offer something

RisingSunn · 03/04/2024 14:17

YABVU! They can be the worst thing!

BogRollBOGOF · 03/04/2024 14:17

At least labour builds up over the course of 40 hours 😉

They are incredibly painful. It's like being attacked in your sleep and the fear that if you attempt to move your foot, you'll rip the solid mass of muscle that's locked. Then a few waves of it and panic at more crushing tension on each round.

As it wears off, there's the depressing realisation that you're going to be sore and limping the next day.

It would be nasty enough in the day, but it's a bloody horrible way to wake up and too painful and abrupt to conciously manage your response.

Magnesium and other electrolytes help with prevention.

Cramp can be absolute agony

After years of not having one I had one a couple of weeks ago. Was awful - the pain was intense. I got very dizzy and everything went black for a couple of seconds. Can be excruciating

saraclara · 03/04/2024 14:18

Yep, I think cramp varies hugely. I don't get it often, and mostly I react like you @Daisypod . But once i had an exceptionally painful one at a level that I wouldn't have believed existed, had I not experienced it. So now I don't assume that cramp yellers are being dramatic.

SummerFeverVenice · 03/04/2024 14:20

My DH had night time leg cramps until he started to eat a banana a day. Something about potassium stops cramps.

Me too. The only solution is to rub the calf muscles vigorously with the heel of my palm. It bloody hurts for hours after too. I panic now if I stretch my leg to far and feel a twinge in my calf.

Curlyblondefemale · 03/04/2024 14:23

I've definitely shouted out in pain due to pain, can't be helped.

Geebray · 03/04/2024 14:28

My DH hasn't woken me because he doesn't get cramp, but I have certainly woken him! The thing is that you're fast asleep, and then BAM you're in massive pain and discomfort. So the yelling is totally reflexive. You can't control it.

PietariKontio · 03/04/2024 14:28

My old housemate used to get cramps a lot, day and night, but would only shout out a night; which he'd put down to the shock of waking up in agony rather than the pain in itself.

I dont tend to make a noise at all when in pain, not bravery or anything, it just's not a reflex I have, wouldn't judge anyone who did tho. Pain isn't a fixed scale for everyone with fixed reactions/tolerances, I know that my wife can tolerate pain that I can't and vice versa, and we both react very differently with our particular least well-tolerated types of pain.

CrappySack · 03/04/2024 14:29

Daisypod · 03/04/2024 09:26

Ok fair enough I am bu. I think partly it's that dh had also been up a lot in the night to go to the loo and woke me every time so I'm a bit tired too. He's still in bed though so I haven't said anything to him yet and I shan't be having a go, glad I asked.
I have been up with the toddler for a couple of hours so hopefully he won't be feeling too bad when he gets up.

Does he try not to wake you when he goes to the loo and also does he do his share or toddler wakings?

If not, it might be displaced (and fair) annoyance about that.

Also a heads up that you'll get a billion people saying you're awful and unreasonable still even though you've accepted you were being u!

Soubriquet · 03/04/2024 14:30

Sometimes, the cramp isn’t as painful even in the same place.

I’ve had it where my leg actually cramped my heel to my bum. I thought I had dreamt it until I woke up the next day and went to stand up and my leg gave way.
