To think that using a chainsaw at 10am on a Sunday is a bit early/inconsiderate?

Just that really. We were woken up by it and thought it was 9am as we hadn't yet changed the clocks.

The two incidents are quite different. If they do the 7am pulling of the bin again I would very calmly just mention that it wakes you up and would they mind putting the bin back later.

10am on a Sunday is perfectly acceptable, even if it's annoying for people who work late / nights on a Saturday.

namechangeaaargh · 03/04/2024 09:01

@Zonder thanks that seems sensible. I can't think straight and get very emotional when I haven't had enough sleep. I know that isn't normal but it is what it is.

I'm the same without enough sleep @namechangeaaargh so I feel your pain.

Kalevala · 03/04/2024 09:03

They used to either leave the bin out til the weekend or bring it up in the evening both of which were preferable. They were bringing it in today not putting it out. I don't hear the bin men come because our houses are a long way back from the road.

In the evening as in straight after work? Noise after 7 could annoy people settling small children. There are very few times outside of regular working hours that don't affect someone.

iLovee · 03/04/2024 09:09

Could you move your bedroom so it's not as close to their driveway?

You have my sympathy OP, not getting enough sleep is torture. It makes me emotional too!

NameChangedAgainn · 03/04/2024 09:17

I would invest in some decent ear plugs, and check the seals on your triple glazed windows. Our bin alley goes past the back of our house and I can't hear the bins going in or out from inside the house, and it's quite a racket if the windows are open or I'm outside.
Our neighbours sometimes put them out at 6am and bring them back in at 11pm or around 6am the following day and it's never disturbed us.
If you're this sensitive to normal neighbour noise then is moving an option? Or maybe buy yourself a white noise machine?

Would you stop after lunch for children's nap time?

Nope. After 11am all bets are off.

Why are you waiting until 11am if you don't care about people's sleep?

Kalevala · 03/04/2024 09:59

I don't understand waiting until late morning only to make noise through afternoon nap time. Not just for young children, my grandmother naps in the afternoon. If I had the choice I'd pick 9am to 12pm as the best time for noise personally.

oh don’t be daft. the vast majority are up and about at 11. shops open at 10 or 10.30 on a sunday

I'm not saying they're not. I would start earlier so as to avoid the early afternoon and give people some quiet then if possible.

on a sunday i’m totally accepting of any noise after sunday trading hours start. before 10…. would be inconsiderate in my opinion but not enough to say anything

when you say you’d start earlier

9am on a weekend, 8am on a weekday I think is reasonable. Stop 12 to 2pm.

weekday… absolutely agree

weekend… i could not in all conscience start up a chainsaw at 9am when i know no shops or cafes are open and the vast majority of people will be at home and many in bed

whereas 12-2…. all shops and cafes open, public transport in full swing, and vast majority are up and about

I don't see why Sunday trading matters. Would you stop noise at 4pm then?

If I didn't care about people's sleep, I wouldn't wait until 11am.

because then you know people will be up and about and shopping and getting coffee and breakfast

and pubs and restaurants still open well in to the evening

Many people such as young children and elderly people nap in the afternoon.

but they are the minority by a significant margin

Topseyt123 · 03/04/2024 10:17

Why on earth would anyone bother stopping work during the day because babies somewhere might be napping for a couple of hours now and then?

I certainly wouldn't. Babies have to learn to deal with normal daytime noise, so no need to feel guilty about lawnmowers, chainsaws etc. Just get on with it.

I know, I nap on a weekend too.

Whatever time of day, there will always be someone who wants to sleep. However a majority of people will be up and about most of the day.

FlickyCrumble · 03/04/2024 10:18

9am Or in the case of my keen gardener neighbour 8.30 is fine. When we have lots to do outside and the sun is out we get out to make the most of the day.

exactly

it’s about what works for the majority in a society
