To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.
WIBU?

There's nothing normal about asking a stranger whether they're vegetarian or not, in an attempt to gauge whether they "need" a cheese sandwich more than you do, @xxxjanxxx.
Not to most people, anyway.

MonderMomen77 · 31/03/2024 20:34

Can I just say, I totally get your reasons for asking about the possible sandwich switch. I don't think it's rude if asked politely. His wife needs to mind her own business. And I do think you should get special treatment from random people in supermarkets and elsewhere, for your excellent diet related choices! (Love from the animals....saved from suffering because of your selfless choices!) 🐷🐮🐥🐔🦆🐬💐💐💐😘😘😘

StarlightLime · 31/03/2024 20:35

🙄

StarlightLime · 31/03/2024 20:38

You do realise op was trying to get the other guy to take a meat sandwich instead of the cheese one, @MonderMomen77 ?
Where's the net benefit to the sweet little animals?

SmileyClare · 31/03/2024 20:46

Yeah probably best in ethical terms to congratulate the man for choosing a cheese sandwich for him or his wife and grab yourself a pasta pot or something. Oh well.
Im guessing you’re stoned or something @MonderMomen77 and not thinking clearly

Ive been asked similar before.. Ive been unsure what i want, picked something and someone politely asked if i minded swapping. It didnt bother me at all. I didnt even really want that item, but the other woman really did, so i gave it to her and picked something else.
Sometimes when i shop i just take random stuff that i dont mind giving up at all. I probably wouldnt be thrilled if everyone did this all the time, but come on, how often does this really happen?

It happens rarely, because 83% don't do it :) if it became normalised, shops would be much more chaotic places.

RavenhairedRachel · 31/03/2024 21:27

Can't you buy bread and put something vegetarian in it ? It seems like a bit of a pointless moan to me.

Juicesausagecake · 31/03/2024 21:33

How many posts does this thread have to get until no one can post anymore?

I think it might be a Mumsnet classic. Or make the Daily Mail. It has been brilliant.

Juicesausagecake · 31/03/2024 21:34

i hope the cheese sandwich man’s wife makes it on here.

And has OP disclosed what she actually had for lunch?

Sleepytiredyawn · 31/03/2024 21:41

Not a veggie, but I don’t like sandwich meats or even cheese, so if the last egg mayo/salad was about to go, I’d honestly never dream of asking someone what you did, and if asked myself, I’d tell you to do one.

Lulu49 · 31/03/2024 21:48

Gluten free is normally because people can't eat gluten as it causes health issues, vegetarianism is a lifestyle choice. It may well have not been vegetarian cheese anyway, if it has rennet in it you couldn't have eaten it.

It’s 1000, I believe. So still some time to go!

@SmileyClare Is that you in disguise @Medsy? 🤨
Op got a simple answer “excuse me, No that’s rude” but she was in her words “quite pissed off actually” 🤣

No, I'm just a normal-thinking person who wouldn't take offence at a simple question OR a wife who feels the need to answer (quite rudely) for her husband

Strange interpretation of OP post, but you do you :)

Yodel294 · 31/03/2024 22:09

I'm veggie and get where you're coming from, but he did get there first. I'm sure there were other options you could have had; something from the bakery counter, or a salad or whatever.

Talkhe · 31/03/2024 22:22

You actually sound like a real life bully.

I don’t think anyone is claiming they’re offended? -apart from op obviously who is determined to think anyone who judges it’ a bit self important and cheeky to ask random shoppers to please have their shopping) is “weird” and “scared of interacting” and “probably someone that is scared to answer their own door”. 🤣

It’s all a bit silly.
As is getting all huffy and retorting Good luck mate and marching out of the shop when someone tells you you’re rude…and then to top it off taking to SM and when lots of people agree it’s a bit rude, calling all of them batshit too 🤣😂

Its entertaining although I’m taking it with a pinch of salt.

xxxjanxxx · 31/03/2024 22:40

@StressedOutButProudMama
You are being u reasonable. How do you know he does t have allergies that means he could only manage a cheese sandwich. Or if he was vegetarian he shouldn't have to answer to you. As for the gluten free excuse that's bat shit crazy, you chose to be vegetarian a gluten free person doesn't usually chose this. The reason there were less sandwiches on the shelf that weren't meat was because it's Easter weekend where many Christians (We are in a Christian county) refrain from eating meat, this is a religious choice, very similar to your choice to be a vegetarian. His wife may have well been upset that you suggested to her husband he should eat meat on Good Friday. Dont make your choices other people's problems.

Eh??!! What!!??

This is an excellent example of what is wrong with the world today.

ForestBather · 31/03/2024 22:41

At this point, I think OP is just having fun with people.

HoldingTheDoor · 31/03/2024 22:43

Considering how incredibly pissed you are about the sandwich I’m wondering just how good they are? Was it plain cheese or cheese and onion? I’ve obviously been missing out.

Ponytailtugger · 31/03/2024 22:52

I wouldn't have asked, but I feel your pain Op. My local Coop was shite at providing vegetarian options. The amount of times I would go in to grab something for lunch and there was literally nothing. Hot food section all meat, sandwich section all meat and fish, so I would go round to the pasty section and still all meat. Yes I could have bought some bread and cheese, but not the most practical when you're on the go. I feel bad for being glad it turned into a Tesco Express as I generally prefer the Co-op's ethos, but I can't understand why they are so bad at providing for vegetarians.

Sallyh87 · 31/03/2024 22:56

Love this thread. For what it’s worth, I voted remain but would never give my chosen sandwich to a grabby entitled so and so. Also the cheese in a supermarket sandwich is almost certainly not vegetarian (containing rennet).

Ilovepotato · 31/03/2024 23:09

I don’t see a problem with the question… if asked nicely it wouldn’t bother me. I am however a vegetarian. 😄 But I’m not mad on sandwiches so I’d likely have just gave you it and used it as an excuse to get something else. Some of the responses here are a bit… intense.

rooftopbird · 31/03/2024 23:44

Sorry but you were weird and rude.
