To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.
WIBU?

I don’t eat mayo and the only sandwiches that ever have no mayo are the just cheese and just ham ones so I wouldn’t have given it to you either - it’s not just vegetarians with preferences 😬

ThePenguinIsDrunk · 31/03/2024 18:24

Blimey OP, from the reaction anyone would you'd snatched the cheese sandwich out of his hands and demanded that provide evidence that his need was greater than yours.
I think that YWNBU to ask, if you don't ask you don't get! I wouldn't be bothered if you asked me. Although I'm also vegetarian so the answer would have been no.

Why do you think that?
Once someone else has selected it then it's no longer available to you.

Ive been asked similar before.. Ive been unsure what i want, picked something and someone politely asked if i minded swapping. It didnt bother me at all. I didnt even really want that item, but the other woman really did, so i gave it to her and picked something else.
Sometimes when i shop i just take random stuff that i dont mind giving up at all. I probably wouldnt be thrilled if everyone did this all the time, but come on, how often does this really happen?

What, people buying random stuff they don't really particularity want?
Not very often, I'd imagine.

Brendaloves · 31/03/2024 18:42

Oh my dear, I’m afraid if this indeed happen and it’s not some kind of made up story for reaction then you are an extremely rude individual.

Personally this is why I couldn’t even consider being a vegetarian or a vegan as it often follows a deep sense of entitlement.

The lack of stock is an issue of the COOP, Not the gentleman who happened to procure the item before you selected it. It is not your right as a vegetarian to be able to demand someone hand over an item of shopping. Regardless of is this meant there where no other options which took your fancy.

I have a particular weakness for jammy dodgers, but if there where two packets of biscuits left in a store, I couldn’t demand I have the jammy dodgers from someone’s trolly if the alternative in the shelves was a pack of bourbons, and I have a dislike of brown food.

Well alright Brenda, but just so you know if I took the last packet of jammy dodgers and you came up tp me and said they were your favourite and you were really craving them, I would give them to you without question and take the bourbons because chances are I just picked them up on a whim 🤷‍♀️

My guess is never.

I guess this has never happened to you @starlightlime. I'm in my late 50s and go to the supermarket probably about 2 to 3 times on average for my entire adult life and many many times in the shops for my mum as a child.

This has never happened to me or been witnessed by me ever. Obviously I'm not a huge sample by myself, but I'm guessing based on the answers on this thread, it hasn't happened to most either. That's really all you need to know about whether it's normal or not.

Cheekydachshundlover · 31/03/2024 19:04

So rude. Would you have swapped if he had asked you for the last cheese sandwich? I don’t eat meat sandwich but prefer homemade than shop bought you had other options. I would have eaten it in front of you.

SmileyClare · 31/03/2024 19:13

Well this happened a lot during the pandemic- remember when the shelves were bare?

In our Tescos there were some entitled individuals questioning shoppers about the number of tins they had and other nonsense and arguing over toilet rolls. Luckily most people were respectful enough to just get the shopping they could from the shelves and resist trying to cadge other peoples chosen items.

I don’t think I’ve ever put items I don’t particularly want in my trolley or picked stuff up on a whim, although I’m a on a tight budget so stick to a list.

I thought you’d wrapped things up op? 🤣
Good luck with making connections in the Co op!

surreygirl1987 · 31/03/2024 19:19

*why start an AIBU but then not accept when they are being told they are?

Are you new here?*

OP, you're making yourself look worse and worse 🙈

Toptops · 31/03/2024 19:19

YABU! And forward!
I'm a meat eater but always choose non- meat sandwiches.
We have a saying in our house 'little me'.
It's only little me, I should have that parking space because I deserve it more than you. Its about entitlement and dismissing others' needs and preferences in favour of your own.
You were being little me because you thought you had more right to that sandwich than the poor man you put on the spot.
I wonder if you'll see the point of view of people voting YABU.....

surreygirl1987 · 31/03/2024 19:19

Medsy · 31/03/2024 08:39

The co-op wife vibe is strong in this one...

Completely proving my point... 🤦🏼‍♀️

surreygirl1987 · 31/03/2024 19:22

I wonder if you'll see the point of view of people voting YABU.....

Doubtful. Despite (currently) 83% voting YABU, the OP is determined to argue that she was correct, is being aggressive and sarcastic with anyone who disagrees with her, and is portraying herself really badly. She didn't get the response she wanted so apparently (she says) she's gone...

SmileyClare · 31/03/2024 19:27

She’s being a Cheesy Fucker that’s for sure

Sennelier1 · 31/03/2024 19:27

I think it's weird asking that question to a total stranger. In a group of friends, o.k., like "help me out here, anybody wants to switch sandwiches?", but surely you don't ask that of a total stranger?

😂😂😂 that did make me giggle

LubyLooTwo · 31/03/2024 19:58

You need to be quicker. One thing I can't stand is people walking round shops and supermarkets with a phone pressed to their ear asking what DH, DW, DS or DD wants to eat. Its pathetic. If you know them yiu should know.

Mellowbear · 31/03/2024 20:05

Rude and entitled!!!

SmileyClare · 31/03/2024 20:07

I’ve got “She’s a Cheesy Lover” by Phil Collins playing in my head every time this thread pops up on my watch list.

Love a silly supermarket thread on a bank holiday weekend. The “batshit” middle aged woman is always lurking in small local Co op’s it seems. There’s always an innocent victim (the op) who is “baffled” by the MN responses too.

Solid work op 🤣

StressedOutButProudMama · 31/03/2024 20:18

You are being u reasonable. How do you know he does t have allergies that means he could only manage a cheese sandwich. Or if he was vegetarian he shouldn't have to answer to you. As for the gluten free excuse that's bat shit crazy, you chose to be vegetarian a gluten free person doesn't usually chose this. The reason there were less sandwiches on the shelf that weren't meat was because it's Easter weekend where many Christians (We are in a Christian county) refrain from eating meat, this is a religious choice, very similar to your choice to be a vegetarian. His wife may have well been upset that you suggested to her husband he should eat meat on Good Friday. Dont make your choices other people's problems.

OldPerson · 31/03/2024 20:20

What you can't make a cheese sandwich yourself? Or a bit of toast? Or there was nothing else in the entire shop you could have eaten?
It's not just rude, it's like the strangers who stop you in the street and ask for money.
"Got any spare change mate? I might be on benefits, but I want to guilt you and make you feel uncomfortable until you hand over what I want."

xxxjanxxx · 31/03/2024 20:21

oh wow! There are some seriously weird responses on this thread.

The OP asked a simple question. The person asked could give a simple answer. The OP would accept the answer.
What is it with people on MN AIBU? ! - do they not have normal interactions with people in everyday life??

FWIW @Medsy I don't find your question to be strange/ rude/ odd/ entitled / rude / cheeky / whatever ....... and I don't think you are strange/ rude/ odd/ entitled / rude / a CF.

It was a perfectly reasonable conversation between two adults, And I genuinely don't see why so many people have a problem with you .......... ! (even though I voted for Brexit 😬 )

Is that you in disguise @Medsy ? 🤨

Op got a simple answer “excuse me, No that’s rude” but she was in her words “quite pissed off actually” 🤣

YoureALizardHarry11 · 31/03/2024 20:33

I wouldn’t have minded if you’d asked me, OP, but then I’m in the minority it seems
