To be annoyed that DH spent €350!!

DH just popped out to the shops. He said he needed a couple of pairs of jeans. He has gone to an outdoor clothing store (very pricey) and bought two pairs of jeans for €100 a pair and then a jacket for €150. He’s come back and I’m upset. We have so much to pay for this month. We are going on holiday and we also have a number of events that we are attending. We are not rich. DH’s argument is that he never buys clothes. He doesn’t buy clothes often but he has sports that he plays where the equipment is really expensive. In the last couple of months, that has been a big expense. I have asked DH to return the stuff and buy cheaper alternatives. He is really upset with me for this. AIBU?

If you can't afford them he should return and manage with what he has. Buying cheap is a false economy, especially things like jeans and a practical jacket that will get a lot of wear.

susiedaisy1912 · 30/03/2024 14:36

Wow that's a huge amount to spend on clothes without chatting about it first.

ABwithAnItch · 30/03/2024 14:39

My husband doesn’t buy clothes often and I wouldn’t care if he bought a few nice items for himself. It kind of sounds controlling and I get the impression even though it’s a lot, you can afford it. To me 100 for jeans is not outrageous

I choose to spend the spare money I can afford to spend, on Botox. Works out as €30 per month. Why is that an issue? Would you say the same if I go for lunch with friends once a month? I’m allowed to choose what to spend my spare money on.

Edited

30 on Botox a month = 360 a year
350 on clothing once a year = 350 a year

MeAndMia · 30/03/2024 14:20

See above… he bought two good quality pairs for less than half of the price. That’s the benefit of shopping around and not buying things on a whim.

As I said, just because they are Levi’s, doesn’t mean the fit or quality is best.

How much do you spend on clothes each month? Is this a regular occurrence for you DH to spend this much?

SwordToFlamethrower · 30/03/2024 14:57

Wow. And here is me, stressing about buying a £12 pair of Primark jeans. Who on earth thinks €100 for one pair of jeans is reasonable!

My primark jeans last me years and years by the way. Currently sat wearing a pair that I bought a decade ago.

Intriguedbythis · 30/03/2024 15:04

You sound really controlling! He’s not a child ffs

And what if he told you not to spend that as you couldn’t afford it. Or made you cancel?

Waiting to hear how Botox is essential but clothes are not

mydogisthebest · 30/03/2024 15:09

I would think DH had lost his brains if he paid that much for jeans. Why did he need 2 pairs? The jacket is not so bad although neither me or DH would pay that much for a jacket

Lots of people will think it's reasonable.
Lots of people avoid Primark, for various reasons - I have had some good quality items from there but also have seen lots of poor quality fast fashion items, the sizing is notoriously unpredictable, plus we have to travel a long distance to reach a Primark store anyway (live quite remotely).
I'd rather save up for Levi's jeans that buy Primark ones, and that's based on having owned both, in various styles.
If OP can spend 30 Euro a month on Botox surely her partner can have some decent jeans.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/03/2024 15:11

I personally think as men's clothes can cost more for quality items (less fast fashion available) this isn't the end of the world.

A toxin or some clothes, let me think......

Not unreasonable for good brand of jeans and jacket. Those things should last and they won’t if it’s fast fashion.

womens clothing have a lot more choice in fast fashion so it’s a bit unfair to compare.

I have never paid more than around £35 for a pair of jeans and DH hasn't either. He wears his a lot and they last years and years. Not paying stupid prices just because they have a certain name

Heatherbell1978 · 30/03/2024 15:24

It wouldn't bother me as DH and I each have our own (equal) spending money and house/bills money is separate. So if he wanted to blow half of his monthly spend on clothes then it would only impact him. This is why you need to organise your money.

No, he’s not a dc. And yet he takes no interest in the household bills leaving it all to OP.
He can’t have it both ways.

Oblomov24 · 30/03/2024 15:24

It doesn't seem bad, because if you are buying quality goods they last longer.

Seems like neither of them have sat down and done a budget, based on what OP has written so far.

Calling something a 'stupid price' doesn't mean much - there's choice because different people want/need/can afford different things.
