AIMB to embrace the grey?

I'm 57 this year. My natural hair colour is very dark brown, but I started going grey years ago and have always dyed it. I've had enough and have decided to embrace the grey! My hair is short and I've almost grown out the dye now, I'm getting used to it and rather like it.........but I've had some very strange reactions from some people who are horrified!!!
Have you embraced the grey? How did you find people reacted?

@inhibernation (at 8.56 today...) Your hair looks very nice, like a lot of totally grey/totally white haired ladies on here. But as I said, it's OK if you are/have gone totally grey. I am only about 10-15% grey, and am not 'embracing the grey,' because there's too little of it. It's far easier for me to dye the 10-15% of my hair blonde (like the rest of my hair,) than it is to just let the grey grow through. It would look shit. (On me!)

If anyone else wants to let the grey grow, and keep growing even though they are less than a quarter grey, and just have silver streaks in mousy or brown hair, then knock yourself out. It's not for me!

My father - and grandfather - didn't ever go fully grey really. They were both blonde/light mousy haired, and it was a mix of blondes and light greys by about 70-75. Looked mostly blonde weirdly. (like two-thirds...) Happened to my aunt too (Dad's sister.) I can see myself going that way. I will never be grey enough to 'embrace the grey' I don't think.

Has anyone who has embraced their grey, found a decent eyebrow pencil / product that isn't really dark? I don't really want to tint mine, but they're still quite dark when the front of my hair is white so I feel like Father Ted some days 😂

My eyebrows are still black but I found a good charcoal grey pencil on Amazon. I'm sorry I can't remember which one it was but it was purple- the pencil not the colour inside. It's a deep cool charcoal with no warmth in it .

I went fully Greg at 49 . I just couldn't be bothered to dye it every week . I've never regretted it ever . The front is pure white and as you can see it's down to my bra strap . Not witchy at all , more Galadriel.

You have lovely thick hair and nice curl in it, too! It looks good!

I'm 51 and have been grey for about 4 years now. It's bliss not having to colour it every 6 weeks and it's in the best condition it's been in decades. It's also long, I do have to be careful it doesn't get too long - other wise I start to look a bit like a scarecrow, and it is a bit more wirey, but I am 51, embracing it and I love it.

Your hair looks in really good condition - good for you in embracing the grey!

Mid-50s, love my silver hair! I feel like a platinum blonde 😊

Ok, you’re my style icon when my hair finally goes grey enough to embrace it (currently 36 and still only have a few random silver strands, but my hair is a similar length and texture to yours). Debbie Harry vibes ✊

I agree it’s a depressing thread - but just as much for the “dyeing your hair is ageing and looks awful “ posts. Loads of women look amazing with grey hair - certainly all the ones who have shared photos on this thread, but equally, lots of us who dye their hair look good too.

This! My grandma had natural white waist length hair when she died, my friend’s grandma had a beautiful head of bright auburn dyed permed curls like lucille ball. They both looked amazing. We need to lose ideas about hair colours being ‘inappropriate’ for certain ages, it’s patriarchal sexist bullshit. If you want to go silver at 30 or dye your hair black till you’re 95, go for it and rock the hell out of it.

Haven't read the full thread because this argument pops up over and over on here!

Grey/silver looks amazing on lots of women, but not so good on others, depending on their skin tone. So there's nothing wrong with either embracing the silver or continuing to dye (as I will do to my dying day)

@KnitFastDieWarm Thanks! I love that you're getting Debbie vibes - I've got darker bits underneath at the back which make me feel a bit like Debbie too! First album I ever bought with my own money at the age of 10 was Parallel Lines ❤️.

First off some very lovely ladies in this thread!

I’ve been having this conversation with my stylist for awhile now (I’m 47) I’m not ready to embrace it yet, I’m too young. I’m getting close though… right now I’m red and my stylist is magic with the color. I will get a compliment from a random stranger on average once a month on the color. (To which I always give full credit to her and a business card if they want it).

It’s just not time yet for me.

I am planning on moving to a more rural area in a couple of years making a career change, and generally starting the next phase of my life… I may do it then. But I’ve also asked my stylist if she would be willing to meet with my hypothetical new stylist (paid for both of course) to share her rotation of formulas. She enthusiastically agreed. She also agreed that if the time came and I was still with her and I was getting into the territory that dying it makes me look stupid or pathetic she’d tell me!

My mother does not approve!!! She is a hairdresser and has been the one dying my hair for years.........she also had dark brown hair which went grey early but still dyes her hair now, not dark brown more dark blonde. She looks fab but I just don't want to be beholden to my roots anymore!
She made her living by dying grey hair so finds my choice very strange!!!
My autistic dc is finding it very strange and keeps asking "what's wrong with your hair"
I'm a confident person, don't wear makeup and I'm happy in my skin.

My mother also does not approve! Says it’s ageing. But I have had compliments:) and have liked it myself. It can look striking sometimes. Too many blonde highlights can look a bit bland.

I man 62 and have played around with adding a few blonde highlights. But from now on I am leaving it alone and going natural. Should be a new look by 2025.

RandomQues · 04/04/2024 21:11

^it may be a generational thing?

RandomQues · 04/04/2024 21:36

But I do think some older women do look nice with blonde hair, especially if it’s short and suits their (warmer) skin tone say?

Just doesn’t suit me.

RandomQues · 04/04/2024 21:38

@KnitFastDieWarm my elderly aunt had this amazing silver hair in her 80s. It was almost fairie-like.
