AIMB to embrace the grey?

I'm 57 this year. My natural hair colour is very dark brown, but I started going grey years ago and have always dyed it. I've had enough and have decided to embrace the grey! My hair is short and I've almost grown out the dye now, I'm getting used to it and rather like it.........but I've had some very strange reactions from some people who are horrified!!!
Have you embraced the grey? How did you find people reacted?

There's nothing more aging than someone of 65-70 or older dyeing their hair a uniform dark brown

Absolutely agree. My mum does this and it doesn't suit her complexion at all. It looks so fake.

I definitely look older with grey hair but couldn't care less. I made a conscious decision to "opt out" of all this anti aging stuff and societies expectations that you continue to "make the effort". I don't wear make up anymore, although I never did wear a lot. The only exception maybe being for a night out but even then it depends what I'm doing.

It makes me happy. The last time I didn't care what people thought of how I look was when I was about 9 yrs old. It's nice to go back to that feeling. I feel free! I'm not interested in impressing anyone. Male or female. If someone judges me for it, it's not someone I'm interested in knowing. And if it's strangers, who cares!

Britinme · 30/03/2024 15:29

I stopped dying my hair during lockdown - took me a year or so to grow it out. I'm glad not to be paying extra to a hairdresser every six weeks or so. I like the grey now I'm used to it.

nearlymrs · 30/03/2024 15:42

I'm 36 and I've started noticing a few more greys recently. I haven't dyed my hair since my early 20's, and don't want to start now. So I'm thinking I'll just have to let it happen and hope it suits me!

S72 · 30/03/2024 15:47

I'm mid 30s, stopped dying my hair late 20s and have many wiry, grey hairs.

My family rib me for it and say it makes me look old and tired. At the same time, I've stopped wearing make up unless it is a special occasion.

JMSA · 30/03/2024 15:49

I'm 49 and a long way off embracing it. I'm blonde though, so thankfully it hides itself well.

Kittynoodle · 30/03/2024 15:50

Oh no!!
grey hair is ageing and dreary

it definitely looks like you’ve given up on yourself

DappledThings · 30/03/2024 15:52

I have no idea when my mum (now 75) started going grey as she's always dyed it. I'm 44, started going grey about 28 and have never cared about dying it. Reckon I'm about 50:50 grey to brown now.

SingingSands · 30/03/2024 15:55

I've never dyed mine - it's very salt and pepper at 45 and I don't care. A good cut is better than a bad dye job.

Barnabyted · 30/03/2024 16:18

I’m 55 and definitely embracing the grey look, or in my case the silvery white.
I’ve had loads of compliments on the colour and am often asked who colours my hair.
I recently tried on a brown wig which is my natural colour, and not one of my friends said I looked younger with brown hair. I looked different, but not younger.
Looking old has more to do with skin colour and texture, your eyes, the way you move, the way you dress and hold yourself. I’ve seen women with dyed hair that look older than people who are greying/grey.

I don’t see a woman with grey hair and think she’s lazy or doesn’t care about her appearance. I see a confident woman not worried about aging naturally and not caring a hoot what other women think.

it saddens me some of the comments on this site. It appears it’s okay for a man to go grey, but not a woman.

HummingbirdChandelier · 30/03/2024 16:21

YANBU.

Most of mine is quite white, I get the darker bits bleached and a white toner. Love it. It’s also long.

I think as long as it’s kept well going with the grey looks great

I think people who post bollocks like this should be required to add a picture of themselves so the rest of us can critique their style.

Sharontheodopolodous · 30/03/2024 17:21

I started going grey at about 21 but am now 45 and stopped dying it about a year ago

I can't be bothered anymore

The only person to be offended is the woman my brother married

I'm nc with my whole family, never met her,I wouldn't know her if I fell over her but she's using it as a stick to beat me with after seeing a video online of me at christmas

I don't give a fuck so carry on with my silver highlights and I'm starting to like how they look

My darling grandad went the same shade of grey and I love how I match him

As for her,she ain't fucking, feeding or financing me so I don't care what she thinks

Timetocheersme · 30/03/2024 17:25

I've been silver now for three years. Never had a negative comment. I'm 48 now.

unsync · 30/03/2024 17:37

I grew mine out years ago and couldn't give a shiny shit what other people think.

Ponoka7 · 30/03/2024 17:40

If I had a hairdresser in the family, I definitely wouldn't. I home dye and my grey gives me natural looking highlights. I go a dark blonde. My plan when I'm older is possibly rose gold. I'm old enough to remember the blue and purple rinces that pensioners got.

Hatty65 · 30/03/2024 17:41

I have embraced the grey. I'm almost white now, and love it. I was very dark too, and had a moment of revelation when Ken Dodd died at 90 and I suddenly thought, 'Jesus - I'm starting to look like him, with dying my hair dark'.

My DM hates it. She's still kidding on she's blonde (now aged 86). She keeps saying 'Your hair is very aging' and I keep thinking, 'Yeah. Not as aging as the Ken Dodd look was, however'.

My hair looks better than it ever has, to be honest.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 30/03/2024 17:44

I'm the same age as you and I'm not ready to embrace the grey yet. I've only got it at the front... and it makes me look totally washed out so I'm happy to keep it dyed. I have gone a lighter shade though...

Dweetfidilove · 30/03/2024 18:03

I always smile when someone says grey ages you or makes you look lazy 😀.

My cousin’s wife is 54 with mostly grey hair now and she just glows. Lovely lady worked in my office - fully grey, very well dressed and groomed and she looked amazing! As do the women I follow on instagram- all normal grey haired, well kept women, looking fabulous.

YourNimblePeachTraybake · 30/03/2024 18:10

I'm 53 and have been completely grey for about a year.
My mum hates grey hair. My sister loves my colour and wishes hers were the same (hers is a beautiful, pure white). I've had a few compliments about my colour. I much prefer it to dyeing every three weeks.l, however old it does or doesn't make me look.
Tbh I'm pretty sure my neck is what makes me look old, not my hair! 🤣

mathanxiety · 30/03/2024 18:14

I got mine cut in a very short style and so ditched both the colour and the volume all at once. Either people are being very kind, or it actually suits me short and grey. I like it, and that's all that counts in my book.

So much depends on the cut. There are styles that look very dated and styles that look hip or even edgy.

Along with cut, you can look older if your cut doesn't suit your face shape.

Condition makes a difference too.

BigBarm · 30/03/2024 18:27

I embraced it a year ago. My hairdresser is a good colourist, but it was getting harder to get the right balance. To help the growing out stage he put in a few very fine highlights and a then toner. I now just have a toner when I get it cut every couple of months.
I like all the different colours and how it reacts to light - sometimes I still look dark haired, sometimes bluey silver, and sometimes quite blonde.
I’m 55 so past caring if some randomer thinks I look older. I AM older! DH loves it. And I like it because it’s perfect for my skin tone and makes my dark eyes really stand out.

AIMB to embrace the grey?
Notfeelinghunkydory · 30/03/2024 18:29

I'm 40 and haven't dyed my hair for over 2 years. I'm very salt and pepper but mostly salt on top 🤣 One less job for me to do and I love my hair colour.

Sunsetsarethebest · 30/03/2024 18:34

Grew mine out at the back end of last year, love my natural grey colour....I'm 38 and decided to embrace it.

SnacksToTheMax · 30/03/2024 18:40

I embraced it at 35 - I was already around 70% grey and just couldn’t keep up with dying it as it grows too fast and my roots were incredibly obvious all the time.

Zero regrets. It’s in much better condition than it was before and I get loads of compliments on the colour, which is actually really flattering to my skin tone (very pale skin and dark blue eyes). I don’t find it to be aging. I have solid streaks of pure white, silver and pewter grey - way more interesting than my dyed colour, and more rock and roll too.
