AIMB to embrace the grey?

I'm 57 this year. My natural hair colour is very dark brown, but I started going grey years ago and have always dyed it. I've had enough and have decided to embrace the grey! My hair is short and I've almost grown out the dye now, I'm getting used to it and rather like it.........but I've had some very strange reactions from some people who are horrified!!!
Have you embraced the grey? How did you find people reacted?

OP, your mum reminds of of my lovely late MIL When my SIL arrived home (she lived overseas and hadn't been home for a few years) with her grey hair after years of black, my MIL was horrified and offered her money to get it dyed back while she was at home.

Grey hair undoubtedly makes you look older

Some of my friends have embraced the grey. I don't think it's a good look, but obvs keep my views to myself

Woolftown · 30/03/2024 10:33

I’ve embraced the grey and often get compliments. It seems more of a trend since lockdown so attitudes may start shifting. Do what makes you comfortable.

What’s wrong with looking older? It’s what tends to happen to people.

Exactly. And it’s not even true. You get to a certain point and you just look like an old person with dyed hair.

I'm the same age as you & stopped having highlights about 4 years ago. I'm not completely grey. I've got a grey, brown, dark blond, highlight look,. My DM, late 70s, has got gorgeous coloured grey highlights, so hopefully, I'm taking after her.

KnackeredBack · 30/03/2024 10:50

54 here and embraced the grey just over a year ago. Half grown out, but the rest is v v blonde so not awful. Not had many compliments, but getting more as it grows out, as it's mainly white but with dark brown stripes in places and that's much better for my facial colouring than the blonde. The bright white is good against my face and it's definitely making my eyes and eyebrows show better now, which is good. Don't regret it.

WoodBurningStov · 30/03/2024 10:51

I'm 51, have long hair and have been grey for about 4 years now. I love it and people have been very complimentary about it. It's my closer family and friends that take the piss but I actually love it, it's in the best condition it been in since I can remember, and it's bliss not having to colour it every 6 weeks.

jeaux90 · 30/03/2024 10:19

I embraced it. I get so many compliments on my hair colour as it's really stripey. Go for it, it's such a relief not colouring anymore.

Same, I'm early 40s and I don't dye my hair, the grey is coming in in streaks and I've been asked where I got my highlights done 😂.

Nottodaty · 30/03/2024 10:55

I want to embrace the grey but the
way it grows currently - no :( My SIL looks amazing the way her grey/white has grown against her very dark hair. She looks lovely and it suits her.

Mine just grows in my hairline spirally dirty grey colour :( I tried this year and it looked bloody awful. I caved and gone for a slightly lighter colour in the hope I can stretch the root touch up to six weeks!! So far it’s worked!

PuppyMonkey · 30/03/2024 11:13

Another here who has embraced the silver. I mostly like it, sometimes have doubts and think I’ll dye it my old dark brown again. But even my hairdresser has told me not to as she loves it grey. Mine is a classic bob with fringe.

A woman serving in the hills in Morrisons greeted me the other day with: “Oh, it’s the lady with the perfect hair!” Grin

Knock yourself out, it's entirely up to you. Not in a million years would I 'embrace the grey' though. Never. Maybe if I was already 90% grey, and was having to dye it every other week, but mine is only about 7-8% greying, and so it's easy to cover up (I keep it blonde, and it only needs doing every 2 months!)

I think 'embracing the grey' and going full grey looks OK/nice on some women, but definitely does not suit everyone, and will result in making you look 10 years older than you did when it was dyed brown/blonde etc... JMO.

chamename · 30/03/2024 11:20

I've embraced it and get loads of compliments. I'm salt and pepper. A few people have assumed I've had it coloured to look like this.

takemeawayagain · 30/03/2024 11:20

I'm amazed that anyone can be bothered to be sorting their roots out every five minutes. I'm not embracing the grey I just really could never be arsed with dying it - and the cost to have it done properly! There are just so many other things i'd rather spend my money on.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 30/03/2024 11:23

My friend has gone grey. She has a sharp bob with a thick fringe. It looks like a steel helmet. I’d never say anything to her, but it does not suit her at all.

Hadalifeonce · 30/03/2024 11:25

I am 66, it's only in the past 5 years or so that I have obviously started to go grey. I haven't dyed my hair for about 20 years, I feel much better about going grey, as I was constantly asked about dying my hair, even DH thought I dyed my hair!

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 30/03/2024 11:29

I am 48 this year and just starting to get some grey hairs - not ready for that yet so will booking to have some highlights done soon!

Peridot1 · 30/03/2024 11:31

I’m not sure I’m embracing it as such but as I think I’m about 80% grey/white now and the hairdresser was putting in a white blend I decided it was a bit crazy to pay for that if it’s there anyway and I haven’t had it coloured since before Christmas. It’s been coloured blond for years but I was originally mousey. So I’m seeing how I go with it. I’m using purple shampoo every few washes.

Getting it cut next week so may go a bit shorter too. I went to a new hairdresser a couple of months ago for a cut and really liked what he did and I think he would do a good job on a shorter cut. And would be honest if he didn’t think he would suit!

oh and I’m about to turn 60.

I'm 40, been going grey since my early 20s, finally embraced it about 18 months ago. I love it. The condition has improved so much since I stopped dyeing it and the grey is sparkly silver and pretty.

I went down the route of getting ashy blonde highlights first to blend with the grey, so I didn't have as extreme a demarcation line as I grew it out. I've now covered what's left of the blonde with pink, so it's silver on top and pink on the bottom. People my age and younger have gushed profusely about how amazing it looks but my mother (68 and says she will never stop dyeing her hair blonde) is absolutely horrified!

Does it age me? Of course. But I still have quite a young-looking face, so for me it's more that it signals my age rather than makes me look older, if that makes sense. I was fed up with people thinking I was much younger than I am and I'm perfectly happy to actually look my age!

😅😅you have described me @BIossomtoes yes I am an old person with dyed hair. Unfortunately I'm not ready to give in yet, so will have to keep paying around £500 a year to get my roots done.

I can’t understand anyone “embracing the grey”, it just looks lazy and like you can’t be bothered. Why anyone would want to look several years older than they are is a mystery to me”

I’m frequently told I look several years younger than I am so maybe it’ll make me look my age, yippee 😁

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 30/03/2024 11:52

I decided, when I was a good bit younger, to just embrace my grey as it came in.
Now in my late 40's I am about 20% (max) grey and it's just blending happily in. I did use a semi permanent dye to add some brightness, but it turned out less intense than planned and so the grey was still grey and the brown was shinier brown - it was an accidental success! Somebody once said to me 'you're too old to be grey' and my response is that 'I'll go grey when my hair decides it's time to be grey'. I feel like it's a personal thing, I don't judge anyone for greying naturally, using dye, going a bright shade of pink (or whatever colour they like) - I would say it is easier to start grey naturally than it is to decide to do it after a period of dyeing (you might well know that, but others might not). Do what makes you happy!

Isn't it more lazy to judge someone for something that affects you not a jot?

KimberleyClark · 30/03/2024 11:54

I’m 62 and yet to embrace the grey. If I ever go white all over then I will. But my skin tone does not suit grey hair.
