Personalised numberplates - many of F&F have them

Not a fan myself. Though like my colleague's one as its a tribute to her late DH. It's his country code which see on vehicles (he was born and raised abroad) his home city's code and first 3 letters of name.

Anyway the few ideas have been taken as found cars attached to them on gov's mot check site. Why should I spend £00s or £000s on a number plate?

Most European countries don't offer them

@PotatoPudding i guess we’re very different - I have a few bags but not designer so probably add up to £200 total 😂
we’re comfortably off but we spend our money on travel. Others wouldn’t want to do that and that’s fine. I’m not dating people are wrong for buying number plates, just that I wouldn’t choose to hang out with those type of people because 98% of the time it is a certain type of person and they’re not my people… and that’s okay.

have bought 3 plates in 19 years. First was £300, second 2 £400 each. They haven’t stopped us from travelling (or anything else)!

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:14

@SoupDragon they aren’t cheap. It’s not like a choice of mars bar v licence plate. I know they vary - still think people do have them usually have a certain personality that’s on varying degrees of nobbishness.

There’s lots of signs people give and we all pick up on these and make judgements whether we want to hang out with this person. It’s one of those signs.

I said they aren't expensive.

There are many attitudes that are signs of being "nobbish". Making ridiculous generalisations and being rude based on them is probably one.

Im not flashy, I'm not a nob, I'm quiet and unassuming. I don't drink wine or have expensive taste in fashion, I just have a private plate that makes me smile. In the same way that someone buying a £200 bag makes them a flashy nob, having a private plate doesn't either.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 29/03/2024 13:05

I was given one a few years ago as a present, haven't got around to putting it on the car yet though.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 29/03/2024 13:05

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2024 13:02

I used to work for a breakdown company and we identified cars by either plate or VIN. But the original plate. The amount of rude arseholes who both didn't remember the original plate and couldn't find their arse with both hands VIN was huge. Even with detailed instructions. They were rude, snippy and superior. So I've never really lost my utter contempt for people who have them. Them and BMW drivers.

And it's not money. The people driving Astons and Bentleys were typically lovely.

That is so interesting - about the Aston and Bentley drivers I mean.

I have zero hope of driving either. But when I buy a lottery ticket I shall mentally allocate myself an Aston Martin.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 29/03/2024 13:05

I know a few people that have them to disguise slightly older cars as well.

Those people were rude because they are rude people, not because they had a private plate.

why did you have to identify a car by a number other than the one it is registered as though?

As an aside, my car has never had another plate so if it had an "original" I wouldn't be able to tell you either.

ThePoshUns · 29/03/2024 08:18

Ah.
I bought one for my som for his 21st.
It's his initials and his year of birth.
I wanted to get him something he would keep forever. He didn't want jewellery/ watch so I thought it was a good present and so does he.
Each to their own.

I got mine for my 21st and love it. I got a watch for my 18th but never really wear it anymore.

ThePoshUns · 29/03/2024 13:09

VerityUnreasonble · 29/03/2024 11:17

Saw a classy one the other day:

B18 BCK

DS, who is an innocent soul, questioned what was funny about "Big back"

I don't get it either?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 29/03/2024 13:10

My DS18 has one. He bought an 18 year old car and paid £200 for a number plate that spells his first name. He did it because he thought it would be fun and it also disguises the true age of the car.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 29/03/2024 13:11

ThePoshUns · 29/03/2024 13:09

Was it meant to be B18 DCK?

Bit shit if it was.

TedMullins · 29/03/2024 13:12

SweetFemaleAttitude · 29/03/2024 07:14

I'll get flamed here, but I think they're totally cringe. A bit of a wankers badge.

Each to their own, whatever floats your boat, horses for courses and all that and my opinion matters not a jot to the person with the car.

I agree. Usually seen on a sports car or a Range Rover and it just makes me think the driver is probably a materialistic wanker with a house where everything is grey

ClockworkDisaster · 29/03/2024 13:12

What a strange thing to get your knickers in a twist about. Someone having a private plate on their car doesn’t impact on your life at all.

But I can’t talk. I have 4. I
hope that doesn’t make me flashy, rude or obnoxious. I like cars. My work life is connected to cars and my hobby is cars. 2 of the plates were bought for my old business and helped bring in work as they tied the business together well.

If that’s what I want to spend my money on then that’s up to me. My bills are paid, no one is going hungry. I don’t care at all for jewellery, fashionable clothes, designer brands, handbags or shoes. Supermarket stuff does me fine. But I don’t call people who do like those ‘flashy’ or that it identifies them as a knob, or suggest that they probably have certain personality traits. That’s what they want to spend their money on, and that’s fine.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 29/03/2024 13:13

I just think of it as an optional twat tax

OldTinHat · 29/03/2024 13:18

Every other car, expect tourists, seems to have one where I live. The county name is abbreviated to three letters so everyone and his dog have that incorporated.

My husband’s life and work are also connected to cars, which is how I got into them. Where I live, there‘s at least one car event within a 30 mile radius every weekend day from Easter through to the end of October. People love cars in this neck of the woods and private plates don’t stand out, as they’re a fairly normal thing to have.

@ThePoshUns and @VerityUnreasonble see my 12.16 post

People use it to advertise which town they're from. You'll also see ones with AB56 which is the postcode

shoppingshamed · 29/03/2024 14:06

Pipsquiggle · 29/03/2024 09:04

@Shade17 it was over 35 years ago.

It was definitely EG0 B0X

That can't be right, the letter O want used in number plates then I'm pretty sure and the format doesn't work

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 14:09

@SoupDragon yes, and as I’ve said, we have different opinions and that is okay. I also said 98% of plate owners I’ve met also have the other characteristics so perhaps you’re one of the 2% 🤷🏻‍♀️

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2024 14:46

why did you have to identify a car by a number other than the one it is registered as though?

Just how they were registered in the system. I was a lowly call centre peon so I wasn't in charge of that Grin

Everyone should know the basics of their car. Including what a VIN is and where to find it. Although, there was a thread the other day where a woman never put petrol in her car so what do I know?

I didn't mind explaining where it was. It was the patronising "well young lady, just send a technician, it's not where you said it was". No, it is there, you're just too arrogant to listen to a woman who works in a call centre.

There were nice people with Beemers and 'cherished' plates but it was noticeable that so many weren't nice. And I never had a wanker driving a Mini, which is a BMW brand. They were always lovely. No one wanted to pick up BMW calls!

Papyrophile · 29/03/2024 15:00

DH has one, originally bought for a cherished restored soft top, but he transferred it to a rather ordinary motor when he sold the favourite child. It regularly makes small children people smile.

Edited to correct spelling!

That’s why I call my car Rex as my numberplate begins LL12 - the postcode for Wrecsam! It’s not a private one mind you, it’s just that my car is almost a teenager!

@shoppingshamed

I haven't used an 'O' , I have used a '0' = zero.

Anyway @Shade17Is probably right and has been bothered enough to correct me numerous times - we all love those people who are technically right that ruin a punchline - well done her 🙄

In fairness, the letter “O” was in use back then.
