Personalised numberplates - many of F&F have them

Not a fan myself. Though like my colleague's one as its a tribute to her late DH. It's his country code which see on vehicles (he was born and raised abroad) his home city's code and first 3 letters of name.

Anyway the few ideas have been taken as found cars attached to them on gov's mot check site. Why should I spend £00s or £000s on a number plate?

Most European countries don't offer them

I’ve never heard F & F either and I’ve been here for ages.

Sounds like you don’t want a personalised number plate though so just don’t get one??

@PotatoPudding the fact you've never kept a car more than 2 years seems to fit with having a personalised plate

If you're trying to show that you're much classier than @PotatoPudding , it's not working.

I'll get flamed here, but I think they're totally cringe. A bit of a wankers badge.

Each to their own, whatever floats your boat, horses for courses and all that and my opinion matters not a jot to the person with the car.

Why would you get flamed for a mainstream Mn opinion?🤣🤣🤣

Cattyisbatty · 29/03/2024 08:38

I’m not a fan of them. I’m not interested in cars though beyond the fact they have 4 wheels and work 😆
My late FIL had a personalised plate and that pretty much sums up my thoughts on them.

ADoggyDogWorld · 29/03/2024 08:38

I don't understand why you are cavilling about not buying something you don't want.

ColleenDonaghy · 29/03/2024 08:40

My PIL bought two new cars at the same time donkeys years ago, so the plates were sequential. They kept them for ages after that, every time they changed cars they kept the old plates. I always thought that was very sweet.

likepebblesonabeach · 29/03/2024 08:40

I'm not sure if your question. You said you're not a fan so why are you asking if you should spend money on them?
Surely you're not considering getting one if you're not a fan, they are not mandatory, you don't have to buy one so why are you asking why you should spend money on one?

Moveoverdarlin · 29/03/2024 08:44

Swoopy · 29/03/2024 08:09

You could save money by changing your name to RG64 7TP

The oldies are the best 😂

Um not the best. Thats the formation of a UK postcode, not a UK number plate.

Glitterbiscuits · 29/03/2024 08:44

I've not seen F and F used like that...I remember when all this was fields....

Although F and F is probably more Fairfax and Favour than Florence and Fred in these parts.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2024 08:46

Why should I spend £00s or £000s on a number plate?

Substitute "number plate" with handbag, holiday, car, jewellery, furniture, clothing.... the answer is the same: because you want to. If you don't want to, fine. Who cares?

It's utterly ridiculous the amount of whinging about personalised number plates that goes on.

For purely practical reasons we bought identical cars at the same time when we returned from living abroad, they had sequential numbers but it didn't occur to us to keep the plates.

ColleenDonaghy · 29/03/2024 08:47

F&F for friends and family has been around forever. Not a MN thing, but in the wider world. I thought it was clear OP!

Gardenproud · 29/03/2024 08:48

Dh and I have matching plates, our initials and birth years so 1 digit difference between the two plates. To those not in on it, it just looks like we drive cars older than they are! Think DF 62 GMB and DF 63 GMB. Not cringe, just meaningful to us.

My plate was under £200. It’ll cost me more than that to change my name.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 29/03/2024 08:52

I have one, I was given it as my 21st birthday present and just change it onto new cars. Never need to remember my license plate as it has been the same for so long.

Plus it is the only thing I was given for my 21st that I still use, which is nice.

I’ve never kept a car more than 2 years. Why would I want to enjoy all the depreciation rather than move a car on whilst it has some value, add a little to it and ensure I maintain a car as best as I can without finance?

The fact you see a stranger on the internet changing their car after 2 years as a personality slight paints you as rather dim, miserable and,
possibly, jealous.

That's what I was thinking. I've been on MN since 2003 and never come across it before

The only good personal number plate I have seen was when I was growing up there was a bloke with a fancy sports car. The reg was
EG0 B0X

It wasn’t, could’ve been E60 BOX though but that’s not currently on a car either.

@Shade17 it was over 35 years ago.

It was definitely EG0 B0X

How?

I had my last car for 13 years and only changed it because of ULEZ.

@Shade17 even over 35 years ago?

Where are you getting your information from?
