Personalised numberplates - many of F&F have them

Not a fan myself. Though like my colleague's one as its a tribute to her late DH. It's his country code which see on vehicles (he was born and raised abroad) his home city's code and first 3 letters of name.

Anyway the few ideas have been taken as found cars attached to them on gov's mot check site. Why should I spend £00s or £000s on a number plate?

Most European countries don't offer them

I agree that many drivers who have them seem to be wankers with no consideration for other road users, however I have a couple of f&f who have them who are not at all egotistical or inconsiderate drivers!

I don't have one, wouldn't buy one, but I
A) like reading them and trying to guess what it stands for/ means.
B) sometimes look to see if I could get one that meant something for me / dh etc but still wouldn't buy it!

When it was first made easier to switch plates (when DVLA realised there was income to be generated) DH looked at buying plates (which were available then) that exactly matched our initials and surname. Same format as for example J Tait, which could be JTA 1T. We thought better of it - too identifying.
Next door neighbour owns a company and his reg ends in B 0SS.

I live in a town with one of the highest percentage of personalised number plates. I find them haff and would never have one. I particularly find the ones that almost spell out a name but don't ridiculous - like using a 4 for the letter A etc.

However it did come in handy once when I was almost run off the road by a woman who had one that virtually spelled out her name.

Toooldforthis36 · 29/03/2024 10:26

Really can’t stand them, quite vulgar imo.

Good Lord, you've looked that up have you? 🙄

It was an anecdote about when she was a child. Who cares if it's 'currently on a vehicle' or whatever it was you said.

Whatever it was they said?
You quoted the post, yet you can’t read what they said in it? 😅

I don't mind them, saw one just last week that I'd quite like FFS1 . Thought it would be a good fit for me as they're probably the most common occurring words that come out of my mouth.

CarrotCake01 · 29/03/2024 10:42

I think they're a bit cringe usually. I just kept the standard one that came with my car, like most people do.

BCBird · 29/03/2024 10:45

B and SiL have one. Each to their own i suppose. Major ick for me.

TheSolstices · 29/03/2024 10:46

It’s the gender neutral equivalent of putting those eyelashes on your headlights.

I'll get flamed here, but I think they're totally cringe. A bit of a wankers badge.

Each to their own, whatever floats your boat, horses for courses and all that and my opinion matters not a jot to the person with the car.

Agreed. Ultimate expression of money over sense.

Don't get it

BIossomtoes · 29/03/2024 11:24

As someone with an addiction to shoes, I was deeply envious of MR55HOE.

OrangeLemonLime24 · 29/03/2024 11:30

I’ve seen LE55 TAX on a farmer’s Range Rover! Thought that was funny. Someone round here has BIO MOM which I think is odd.

generalexpert · 29/03/2024 11:33

It's an easy way of spotting a knobhead on the road. So quite useful really.

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 29/03/2024 11:37

What are you talking about? You won't have to spend anything on it. Unless you want one.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 29/03/2024 11:40

I used to live in California, and if you buy one there the money goes into a fund for environmental causes.

I'm confused by this thread. So you don't like them but were still researching them?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 11:53

I always assume they’re for people with too much money and a desire to ensure people know they have money by first impressions. I don’t get them at all.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 29/03/2024 11:59

But they aren't expensive.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 29/03/2024 12:02

I also find them somewhat tacky, but why the hate and judgement of anyone driving a car with them?

Who knows whether it's even their car. And if it is, was the registration their choice or a gift they're too kind to reject?

Most of all, I have friends and family with personalised registration plates. I disagree with their taste in that particular matter, but they're lovely people, not wankers!
