Personalised numberplates - many of F&F have them

Not a fan myself. Though like my colleague's one as its a tribute to her late DH. It's his country code which see on vehicles (he was born and raised abroad) his home city's code and first 3 letters of name.

Anyway the few ideas have been taken as found cars attached to them on gov's mot check site. Why should I spend £00s or £000s on a number plate?

Most European countries don't offer them

I have 2. They both relate to the cars they are on. The older car is worth twice what I paid for it 19 years ago, partly because of the plate.

Have bought one for my daughter (currently 13) for when she passes her driving test. It won’t mean anything to anyone but her.

Happy with my choices in this area,

(the Ferrari with ADHD AF on the plate is a work of genius! (It’s AD11DAF.)

StormingNorman · 29/03/2024 12:05

Nothing screams nouveau quite like a private plate.

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:14

@SoupDragon they aren’t cheap. It’s not like a choice of mars bar v licence plate. I know they vary - still think people do have them usually have a certain personality that’s on varying degrees of nobbishness.

There’s lots of signs people give and we all pick up on these and make judgements whether we want to hang out with this person. It’s one of those signs.

DoubleOuch · 29/03/2024 12:15

"I drive a BMW, but in case I forget to drive like a nob one day, I'm going to put crappy personalised number plates on, then there won't be any doubt"

I recently paid under £200 for one. That’s less than a designer handbag, a good weekend out, a new outfit, etc.

Whenever I go back up North, I see very few, but in the East and South, they’re very common. It’s similar with luxury brand cars; ten a penny where I live.

CastlesinSpain · 29/03/2024 12:22

I'm on my second one, the first having been replaced by one that (from a distance, 😁) spells out my name. So if anyone is a mad fan of The Professionals TV series, and preferably owns a Ford Capri I've got a plate on retention that's just what you need!
DH used to regularly pass a driveway on his way to work with two cars on it - registrations "2B" and "NOT 2B"

Are you called Bodie or Doyle? Or Cowley?

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 29/03/2024 12:24

Are you called Bodie or Doyle? Or Cowley?

LOL, no. But I have a weird name and only discovered recently that the registration that most resembles it had never been issued - so I applied to the DVLA and bought it quite cheaply.
The Professionals one used to be on my Nissan Micra - never owned a Capri myself. If you are interested it's PR05 FAN. I keep meaning to sell it on Ebay...

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:29

@PotatoPudding see I think £200 on something so pointless is expensive. A bag at least carries stuff and has a purpose. Everyone has different perspectives I guess.

Shade17 · 29/03/2024 12:32

Pipsquiggle · 29/03/2024 09:42

@Shade17 even over 35 years ago?

Where are you getting your information from?

Yes, even over 35 years ago. My basic knowledge of registration formats tells me what is and isn’t possible. The most likely version that fits is EGO 80X and that’s still in existence.

zingally · 29/03/2024 12:34

I don't see the point of them personally. But I know plenty of people who have, and love them.

I used to work for the DVLA back in the day, and a lot of my day to day work involved the transfer of personalised plates. And let me tell you, it very easily become an expensive hassle.

A bag does carry stuff but most of us don’t only own one. I have several unused bags that cost more than my plate.

👍

I’m not a taker. But I can see the attraction in a plate that told the world I was part of CI5.

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:39

@PotatoPudding i guess we’re very different - I have a few bags but not designer so probably add up to £200 total 😂
we’re comfortably off but we spend our money on travel. Others wouldn’t want to do that and that’s fine. I’m not dating people are wrong for buying number plates, just that I wouldn’t choose to hang out with those type of people because 98% of the time it is a certain type of person and they’re not my people… and that’s okay.

Why are we not your sort of people? What do we do differently? Do you think we’re all drowning kittens for fun?

2023NEWMUM2023 · 29/03/2024 12:45

Our 1 yo has a personalised reg! FIL got it him for his baptism when he was 4mo. It has his name and 23 (year of birth). But because both are cars are older than 23 we can't use it. So we'll have to wait till the baby is old enough to drive and owns a car lol (or buy a new car!)

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:47

@PotatoPudding 😂😂😂 if you don’t understand the psychology of different personality types I’m not explaining it to you. Humans naturally are attracted to friends with things in common. It’s not the plate alone. Whenever I’ve met people with plates, there’s other characteristics and they’re not people I would generally gravitate to socially. This is just my experience over many years. I love my dad but also know he wants a plate… he can also be a bit of a flashy nob 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I would love to know the characteristics.

Ruralrecluse · 29/03/2024 12:51

There's a reason they're called vanity plates. The only good thing about them is you can sometimes find out who they are if you need to

TeenLifeMum · 29/03/2024 12:51

Er flashy nob - I’ve been pretty clear. Also playing dumb and trying to get a rise out of people while giving off the air of superiority. Don’t worry - you’re doing it well just in a few posts. It’s very amusing that you’re just embedding my feelings further. I’ll hang with my friends and you hang with yours, it’s all good.

Amazed by the vitriol on here about a bloody number plate.

A free bag also carries stuff so buying one is pointless.

I've transferred mine recently and it was no hassle at all. All done online in a matter of minutes.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2024 13:02

I used to work for a breakdown company and we identified cars by either plate or VIN. But the original plate. The amount of rude arseholes who both didn't remember the original plate and couldn't find their arse with both hands VIN was huge. Even with detailed instructions. They were rude, snippy and superior. So I've never really lost my utter contempt for people who have them. Them and BMW drivers.

And it's not money. The people driving Astons and Bentleys were typically lovely.
