Accidental crime...

ChinChinDarlings · 27/03/2024 21:30

NC, because I have become an inadvertent criminal.

This sounds unlikely but it true and I would like some advice and insight.

I was out today with a friend, lunch, galleries, bit of shopping. Tapping away merrily with my card.

My husband met me at the station to pick me up and I said I needed to go to the supermarket to get something and he asked what I'd been paying with all day because he had my card in his pocket.

We'd been away at the weekend and he'd been using my card because that was the card we had on us, I have a premium banking product and my card is very distinctive. I'd checked that I had my card in my holder before I went out today because I knew We'd both been using it at the weekend. Saw it was in my holder and have been tapping away all day.

The card I had in my holder and have been merrily using all day, is not my card. It belongs to a man I've never heard of. The only solution I can see is that I picked his identical card up that he left on a table and I assumed it was my card.

I have been spending a stranger's money all day. Shall I just phone the bank? Won't I look like a criminal?

TL;DR. I have accidentally spent some blokes money all day. I don't know what to do!

Contrary to what others think, I’m not convinced you have a ‘wicked sense of humour’, OP. I haven’t seen you have a sense of humour in any of your posts. You just sound bored and strange.

I accidentally quoted myself instead of you.

Which does indeed make me look a bit strange.

And buggers up my nonchalance.

I am very glad you took the time to tell me I don't have a sense of humour.

1/5. Would not ask for reviews again.

How so, is the OP a teacher? Although it isn't actually the school holidays where I am so it wouldnt make a difference if she was

His account details are probably on the card, I'd transfer the money to him and call the bank to tell them

What??

No way.

All sorted!

I've transferred the money I spent.

And the bank very very kind.

A happy ending and the police can concentrate on actual crimes.

Boooo, you shoulda gone down fer this...doof doof...

Tis a truth universally acknowledged.

When I reported my card stolen to the bank, they advised me to report it to the police. This was approx 2 hours after it being stolen.

the police pulled camera footage and could see who was using the card.

Wow, that's lucky. When I was violently robbed at the cashpoint, the police were unable to gain access to the CCTV from the very same bank for over 8 weeks. It was not the Met's fault, they updated me every few days to say they were still waiting for it.

ilvautmieux · 28/03/2024 10:10

IF it's a Coutts card it COULD look like this - which is pretty distinctive!

Back in the day, MN used to have a veritable host of comedy characters.

Usually they are offered to customers who have cash savings over about £50k, and a salary over a set amount. They have lower or no charges, often free travel insurance, and other preferential perks.

I know, I work in banking.

I have well over those limits myself (though my bank doesn't actually know my salary) but have never bothered to take up these special accounts. I actually find that all my accounts are free. I've never paid an account fee. Nationwide had free travel insurance for years but sadly stopped at a couple of years ago.

Looking at those accounts the other "preferential perks" tend to be things like mobile phone insurance (not needed), breakdown insurance (not needed) etc. Or discounts on their totally standard insurance policies which you can get for the lower price by going through comparison sites.

Oh, and fancy coloured cards.

Shefliesonherownwings · 28/03/2024 10:30

I think you’re done now OP.

You sound very entitled, and boastful. Well done on not having a card many people have. Move along now.

Can't have been tapping 'all day' as every 5th tap requires PIN authentication (can be fewer taps if you've spent close to the £100 limit for a couple of taps).

No it doesn't!

WOMANDOWNN · 28/03/2024 10:43

OP you have handled the vipers BEAUTIFULLY.

Chefs kiss to you. Bravo!

SapphosRock · 28/03/2024 10:43

Just waiting for the Relationships thread started by some poor woman who saw a payment of £280 on DH's bank statement from an unknown woman with the reference 'Sorry'.

The consensus from posters will be to LTB as it was a refund from an unavailable prostitute.

100% this. This thread is hilarious, people are crazy and @ChinChinDarlings you are my new favourite poster.

I need to know what kind of drugs you are on that could power the world!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/03/2024 11:06

Ohhh dear, @ChinChinDarlings - you really have been well beaten-up over an innocent mistake, haven't you! I'd suggest you use the card one last time, to order yourself some sackcloth and ashes.

I cannot transfer money to a person who is only known to me by their name.

Their account details are not on the card.

Jesus!

(You know Easter is round the corner. Calm down now).

oooooh a contradiction ...

So, they breached the data protection act by giving you another customer's bank details?

Unlikely.

Did you also self report that your husband uses your (tres exclusive) bank card, because with most (all) banks, that is against their terms.
Show quote history
I have his bank details because I am in possession of his card!"

ps i only noticed as I was only reading posters comments lol

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 11:18

@WOMANDOWNN why are you encouraging such fuckery?

@GoldenDoor quite!

pizzaHeart · 28/03/2024 11:26

Have you contacted your bank already? And if yes, what did they say ?
Im just curious.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/03/2024 11:31

@pizzaHeart - @ChinChinDarlings contacted the bank before 8.20 this morning, transferred the money to the account holder and sorted the whole thing out.

If you go to settings (click on the v next to where it says Talk, at the top of the thread) you can choose to highlight all the OP's posts in any thread by changing their background colour - this makes it much easier to spot any updates.

BowtieBling · 28/03/2024 00:48

@ChinChinDarlings I think you are fabulous.
You had a great day, realised about the card, had a little panic, posted in here, calmed down and are now providing us all with an entertaining thread while planning to sort it out in the morning.

Why anyone else has their knickers in a twist over these facts is beyond me.
Anyone who has ever had to contact a bank or card company in the phone should be under no illusion that it's a draining, time consuming pita! Posters declaring they would ring and sort it out right now are either deluded, liars or self righteous sorts determined to tear others down.

Chin chin to you and good luck on the phone tomorrow 🥂

I suggest anyone that thinks its a PITA to call their bank should switch to First Direct.

Absolutely hassle-free!

JamieGoo · 28/03/2024 11:42

@ChinChinDarlings I doubt you will entertain me but how rich are you? Are you from a family of wealth? Did / do you work or ever worked in professional senior role?

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 28/03/2024 11:45

ChinChinDarlings · 28/03/2024 08:38

Is this going to be a 'CANCEL THE CHEQUE' scenario?

You are working a little too hard for that. Always very painful to see someone try to engineer a Classics thread.

I also doubt that this scenario being described by @ChinChinDarlings happened. I think ChinChin is telling porkies.
