Accidental crime...

ChinChinDarlings · 27/03/2024 21:30

NC, because I have become an inadvertent criminal.

This sounds unlikely but it true and I would like some advice and insight.

I was out today with a friend, lunch, galleries, bit of shopping. Tapping away merrily with my card.

My husband met me at the station to pick me up and I said I needed to go to the supermarket to get something and he asked what I'd been paying with all day because he had my card in his pocket.

We'd been away at the weekend and he'd been using my card because that was the card we had on us, I have a premium banking product and my card is very distinctive. I'd checked that I had my card in my holder before I went out today because I knew We'd both been using it at the weekend. Saw it was in my holder and have been tapping away all day.

The card I had in my holder and have been merrily using all day, is not my card. It belongs to a man I've never heard of. The only solution I can see is that I picked his identical card up that he left on a table and I assumed it was my card.

I have been spending a stranger's money all day. Shall I just phone the bank? Won't I look like a criminal?

TL;DR. I have accidentally spent some blokes money all day. I don't know what to do!

I have his bank details because I am in possession of his card!

One of your first replies on this thread was that the bank details aren't on the card...

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 09:39

Do I? That indeed is ick, but you just sound on the edge, however I don’t care enough to analyse why. I actually asked out of genuine concern but never mind.

OP probably alienates people in real life too @Daffodilsandtuplips

Hope you get some sleep OP, when you crash I’m sure it won’t be pretty.

So, they breached the data protection act by giving you another customer's bank details?

Unlikely.

Did you also self report that your husband uses your (tres exclusive) bank card, because with most (all) banks, that is against their terms.

Maybe she means she transferred the money back to the bank and they gave it to the man whose card she used.

I have no idea how this works - but I'd say, the bank notes her spending on the man's card - this is then looked into for fraud reasons, then is debited from her premium banking account. The bank then looks into if the man spent anything on her account, and then vice versa happens as per last sentence.

But from this website, all that happens is the customer pays back the money spent, so OP is right there:

It's 9:30am have you rung the bank yet?

Noyesnoyes · 28/03/2024 09:41

@Ramalangadingdong the £200 went up to £300 later.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 09:42

@uhOhOP if only mumsnet had an auction for great usernames 😂

Most banks offering Premium banking have 24 hr telephone banking. Just saying.

Once more.

For those at the back.

I have a card that not many people have. It's a premium banking product. I made no claims other than that. I can only tell you that I don't pay much attention to people's cards. I obviously picked up a bloke's card assuming it was mine.

You know sometimes you get your children confused? It was a bit like that. But money was involved.

My bank didn't open until 8am.

I have transferred all spent funds to the undoubtedly very confused man who is wondering a) why his cards doesn't work any more.

And b) when he investigates; there's a transaction from a woman he's never met entitled, 'sorry'.

Retrospectively, I hope it causes him no grief...

@Ramalangadingdong the £200 went up to £300 later.

It was about 250 when I tallied it.

I transferred 280 to be on the safe side.

Well done for doing the right thing.

I hope you are correct that he wasn't caused any difficulties because of this.

And I hope those on MN for whom loosing their card and hundreds from their cash flow would be a big deal, don't end up with someone like you carelessly picking up their card.

Viviennemary · 28/03/2024 09:47

You need to inform your bank without delay. You will probably be on CCTV fraudulently using a card. You seem to have a very casual attitude. I would be worried sick. And what about the person whose card you have been merrily using. Do you give them a thought. Doesn't sound like it.

Noyesnoyes · 28/03/2024 09:48

@ChinChinDarlings once more you stated you didn't have his details on the card? Then you did?

I can put that in bold if you're standing at the back.

mumda · 28/03/2024 09:51

My premium banking product had a 24 hour concierge call number. It was ridiculous really.
No longer have that product as I put my money into a house and now only qualified for their pauper account.

Lack of imagination? Hunger more like.

Hunger for a two hour chicken banquet? Going by the prices of the transactions the got five meal deals each! As I said I hope they enjoyed their feast!

uhOhOP · 28/03/2024 09:39

One of your first replies on this thread was that the bank details aren't on the card...

Yes! That is true.

But PPs were extolling me to just put the money in his bank account.

Which I wasn't going to do until I had actually spoken to the bank.

I was fudging it a bit.

Mea culpa.

Contrary to what others think, I’m not convinced you have a ‘wicked sense of humour’, OP. I haven’t seen you have a sense of humour in any of your posts. You just sound bored and strange.

I’m loving OP’s sense of humour, she has a come back for every cutting remark.

She’s not going to let you hold her premium bank card.

Indeed. They are, shock horror, just normal banks (faints at the thought) who offer extra services and funny coloured cards to mugs apparently speshul insecure customers.

Usually they are offered to customers who have cash savings over about £50k, and a salary over a set amount. They have lower or no charges, often free travel insurance, and other preferential perks.

Oof, so you used some random bloke's card. And your husband used your card - even though it's not his bank.

You are the 'let them eat cake' of bank cards.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 28/03/2024 09:58

His account details are probably on the card, I'd transfer the money to him and call the bank to tell them
