Accidental crime...

ChinChinDarlings · 27/03/2024 21:30

NC, because I have become an inadvertent criminal.

This sounds unlikely but it true and I would like some advice and insight.

I was out today with a friend, lunch, galleries, bit of shopping. Tapping away merrily with my card.

My husband met me at the station to pick me up and I said I needed to go to the supermarket to get something and he asked what I'd been paying with all day because he had my card in his pocket.

We'd been away at the weekend and he'd been using my card because that was the card we had on us, I have a premium banking product and my card is very distinctive. I'd checked that I had my card in my holder before I went out today because I knew We'd both been using it at the weekend. Saw it was in my holder and have been tapping away all day.

The card I had in my holder and have been merrily using all day, is not my card. It belongs to a man I've never heard of. The only solution I can see is that I picked his identical card up that he left on a table and I assumed it was my card.

I have been spending a stranger's money all day. Shall I just phone the bank? Won't I look like a criminal?

TL;DR. I have accidentally spent some blokes money all day. I don't know what to do!

If he knows he's lost it he's going to call the bank and it'll be refunded. I honestly would just leave it. I once had my card stolen and had 12 separate purchases at KFC over the course of two hours adding up to £100 or so on my bank statement. I hope they enjoyed their chicken and the bank can well afford it. No need to worry OP!

What!

That is ver' funny.

The lack of imagination!

Oh sorry! I wouldn't have but am impressed you did!

You wouldn't have given back money you realised wasn't yours to spend? Presumably it's the realising you'd made the mistake that makes a crime.

You must be knackered OP. Hope you're not a brain surgeon by day.

Great news!

I'm abso-fucking-lutely not.

That feels very much like a you problem.

But then, why were you up until all hours posting on MN about this? Surely you have sleep to attend to? I mean there's no bloody way I'm on MN past midnight, unless I can't sleep for worrying about something...

SheepAndSword · 28/03/2024 09:02

I've found this depressing as the OP's attitude right from the start has been "I am frightfully amusing, yah?"

I don't understand why you didn't call the bank right away? Posting on here about the situation all night rather than making the call there and then makes it all seem a bit more doge than you're worried about!

OP has the rudeness and cheek (chutzpah) to be a surgeon. But not the intelligence levels.

The fact they weren't open was a massive inhibitor.

@Ginnnny OP also states that was the intention all along - to call in the morning.

OP, are you alright? You’ve been up all night and are being quite confrontational and waiting for posts so you can pounce. It’s bizarre.

Most banks (even the premium ones) have 24 hour phone lines.

But to be fair to you, I probably would've left it til daylight too.

That is nonsensical, you must know that?

It is very strange, why has she been up all night? If I ever pulled an all nighter I'd be knackered.

What business is it of yours? The OP has not shared any information about her life or why she's awake.

As usual with posters like you having nothing to contribute to the actual thread is to deflect to issues that are none of your business.

It is not nonsensical as it applies to you, well at least from my POV.

As my New Yorker friend would say, you've been a bit snarky this morning.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 09:07

@Alondra are you OPs alter ego?

Alondra · 28/03/2024 08:24

I believe it. We are Spaniards living in Australia and the last time we travelled to Madrid, somehow we ended up in the wrong line. A passport control police guy took a look at my DH's passport and waved us through. We later discovered DH had my passport and trust me, he doesn't look anything like me.

I went on a school coach trip to Italy in the mid 1990s and the lead teacher got all the way to Rome (four days and several borders in) before discovering she had been travelling on her husband’s passport. She had to get hers couriered over!

Ginnnny · 28/03/2024 09:08

@Betterbuckleupbarbara I guess many other worrying about being "dodge" as OP was, would call right away - even premium banks have 24 hour phone lines!

Wasn't just me concerned about the OP's sleep or lack of it. I couldn't give a flying fuck if she slept or not.

But not sleeping well and posting on the internet, it's bound to affect one's mood, I find. Especially if you're a bit stressed about something.

LOL, I doubt it.

But on the other hand, who knows? 😎

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 09:09

@Ginnnny absolutely and the lost / stolen / fraud line on any account is 24/7 so makes no sense at all unless this is a wind up

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 09:10

@Alondra hah hah 😄

Can't have been tapping 'all day' as every 5th tap requires PIN authentication (can be fewer taps if you've spent close to the £100 limit for a couple of taps).

No it doesn't. I am rarely asked for a pin.

ChristmasTreeThief · 28/03/2024 09:12

NC for this as my daughters are on here and they will INSTANTLY recognise me (hello girls!)

Whilst living in Germany some years ago we visited a huge garden centre in December as was our tradition to purchase our tree and other wonderful German Christmas decorations.

I'd filled my huge trolley and the tree was underneath wrapped in netting. It was about 7' tall so not insignificant! The way it worked was you got given a ticket to hand in to the check out on exit - I'd put this in my pocket and merrily gone around the centre loading my trolley. I spent LOT of euro!

We loaded the car and started driving off. My girls said, mum did you give the tree ticket?

Oops! No I hadn't 🤦‍♀️ I'd walked out with a 7' tree 🤦‍♀️

Thank you.

I've had very odd sleep-patterns since I was a child. It's always been commented on as though it was somehow a moral failing.

I never understood why.

Anyhoo, we're not here for that.

However, now the villinary has been settled, we can talk sleep, or lack of.
