Accidental crime...

NC, because I have become an inadvertent criminal.

This sounds unlikely but it true and I would like some advice and insight.

I was out today with a friend, lunch, galleries, bit of shopping. Tapping away merrily with my card.

My husband met me at the station to pick me up and I said I needed to go to the supermarket to get something and he asked what I'd been paying with all day because he had my card in his pocket.

We'd been away at the weekend and he'd been using my card because that was the card we had on us, I have a premium banking product and my card is very distinctive. I'd checked that I had my card in my holder before I went out today because I knew We'd both been using it at the weekend. Saw it was in my holder and have been tapping away all day.

The card I had in my holder and have been merrily using all day, is not my card. It belongs to a man I've never heard of. The only solution I can see is that I picked his identical card up that he left on a table and I assumed it was my card.

I have been spending a stranger's money all day. Shall I just phone the bank? Won't I look like a criminal?

TL;DR. I have accidentally spent some blokes money all day. I don't know what to do!

You don't sound like you have much common sense or concern for the person who's card you have. Why post on here instead of just ringing the bank. Waiting until the morning is pointless.

Would you feel the same if it wasn't a card that suggests the person has plenty of money?

ChinChinDarlings · 28/03/2024 08:38

Is this going to be a 'CANCEL THE CHEQUE' scenario?

Allfur · 28/03/2024 08:46

Why not put the card on your phone so you don't even have to take it out with you

Solonelyy · 28/03/2024 08:47

Why did you and this random bloke have your bank cards sitting on a table somewhere?

I have no answer to that.

It was a thing.

That happened.

I'd phone the bank, unlikely the card owner won't kick up a stink about the unauthorised charges.

Your morals are gutter level but your confidence is sky high

Posters like you are what's wrong with MN. You don't bother to read, or understand, what the OP has been saying from her initial post but denigrate her character because she's been having a bit of fun.

This is the essence of what the OP has been saying all day:

She used the card for several transactions before noticing it wasn't her own. (She could only use it because the card's owner had not noticed it was missing. Otherwise, it would have been cancelled).

She said, she'll call the bank in the morning and refund the money.

That's it. The rest is typical AIBU frothing at its best. Including being insulted for having a wicked sense of humour.

ClaudiaWankleman · 28/03/2024 08:51

OP sounds, to me, to have been perfectly reasonable? I don't think I would have been calling at 10pm either - it could've easily turned into 3 hours on the phone and I wouldn't want to be going to bed that late either.

There's some really weird posts on this thread.

Money can't buy class.

I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE BANK AND PAID THE MONEY BACK.

I can do bold for those in the back that aren't listening.

Loving the people who wanted OP to phone the police to report that she hadn't committed a crime.

Utter Lolz.

An Internet connection can't buy the ability to RTFT.

But we do what we can.

When I reported my card stolen to the bank, they advised me to report it to the police. This was approx 2 hours after it being stolen.

the police pulled camera footage and could see who was using the card.

ChinChinDarlings · 28/03/2024 08:55

Nobody stole anybody's card.

Bank accounts can be suspended if the bank decides the transactions are fraudulent.

IamaRevenant · 28/03/2024 08:57

If he knows he's lost it he's going to call the bank and it'll be refunded. I honestly would just leave it. I once had my card stolen and had 12 separate purchases at KFC over the course of two hours adding up to £100 or so on my bank statement. I hope they enjoyed their chicken and the bank can well afford it. No need to worry OP!

There's absolutely no chance that the police have picked this up for investigation and assigned an officer who has communicated with a bank and tracked the usage down to a specific location and also visited that location to collect footage and taken it back to the office to review the footage. Let alone made a connection with the OP and identified her. Within 24 hours.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 28/03/2024 08:58

@ChinChinDarlings is it though?
