To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

on a thread where someone has said they are upset being mocked for their name there's loads of people mocking various names.

Classy

I honestly think Alexa is a lovely name. Such a weird thing to find funny.

Yep
Agree
And I have an 'Alexa'

I’m shocked at the immaturity of adults sometimes.

Better than if you were called Siri, or Isis.

I knew a child called Isis years ago now, they changed her name to Iris

SignoraVolpe · 28/03/2024 07:01

I had to treat a man named Adrian Mole, his dob indicated that he would have been a teenager when the book first came out.
I felt so sorry for him and said absolutely nothing about his name.

A stupid colleague at another appointment brought up his name and commented jokingly on it and the book. He rightly imo gave her a telling off.
She absolutely deserved it.

Forhecksake · 28/03/2024 07:34

That's just bizarre. Alexa was a female name long before the Amazon product existed, so I don't understand why they think it's funny.

I know a Paul McCartney who is about the same age as THE Paul McCartney so he lived a perfectly normal life for about 20 years and then every time he met a new person he'd get:

Say hi to John/George/Ringo for me

Can't believe you've given up music to be a teacher

Are you named after him (despite that clearly being impossible).

He's always said that the worst thing was just how unoriginal all the jokes and comments are and each person thinks that they will be the only one to say it so it's a bit unreasonable to get arsey about it, but it's actually horrible meeting new people and knowing that you're going to have to get over their reaction to your name and not be snarky about yet another round of jokes and comments (he is a far nicer person than me!!).

Ooh, that must be so very tedious indeed - especially as the former Beatle's real first name is actually James; Paul is only his middle name.

I always used to feel so terribly for people on Family Fortunes, during the Les Dennis era, where they clearly had to put up with Les 'hilariously' pointing out something that 'nobody' had ever noticed before.

People who had names like 'William Little' or similar - being forced to pretend to find it side-splitting and soooo original when it was mentioned that they were actually 'little dick' and you could just tell that they wished they could mercilessly whack Les with a nine iron!

Meanwhile, over in the Baby Names topic, people are reassuring assorted OPs that their child will never be mocked for their name and that it never happens.

My name is Karen and apart from a few cheeky quips from my teenage son, nobody has ever commented on it. I don't think it's as pervasive in the real world as some seem to think. I had to explain it to my two best friends, one of whom is also called Karen.

OP's user name is NotAmazonAlexa and the last paragraph of her OP is "Fuck you Amazon".

Has everyone's reading comprehension dissolved in a puddle of school holiday stress, or are you all just really bad at puzzles? ConfusedGrin

It really is a very tedious thread. Not the ops fault of course!

Justkeeepswimming · 28/03/2024 09:00

I don’t find it funny because a close childhood friend was called Alexa and I associate it with her.

I do think about her frequently now - obviously - and have often thought it must be difficult.

Sorry this has happened, people will just try to make conversation - badly. Agree it’s very unprofessional.

marshmallowfinder · 28/03/2024 09:40

Yabvu to be 'pissed'. Assume you meant 'pissed off'?

Alexa is a beautiful name. I would really not tolerate comments on it OP, and tell people so as soon as they start up. Bunch of idiots.

Why does it matter, you still understood what she meant? Good grief.

I am known by my second name for pretty much the same reason My first name became a joke in the 1980s (now thankfully not so much.) I changed it after someone interviewing me for a job basically said they never expected someone with such a chavvy name would apply for the post!

People of a certain age still laugh when they learn my name, including people who should know bette and make comments such as you 'don't look/sound like a (insert name).

Honestly OP my advice is use a dimunitive/alternate name and don't be afraid to call people out - everytime. The MN classic 'did you mean to be so rude' is a good start. I only wish I'd known the phrase 30 years ago.

SwordToFlamethrower · 28/03/2024 10:49

My mother in law suggested it as a name for our DD, 18 months ago. We were incredulous. Up till Amazon got hold of it, it would have been a lovely name.

I would make a complaint against everyone who in a professional setting, made fun of it. Absolutely horrible thing to do

TomatoWrap · 28/03/2024 11:04

I had a friend called Jihad. Poor fucker had to stop wearing his name badge at work. There was definitely no laughing, just horrific abuse to one of the mildest mannered people I've ever met.

OP, you're not wrong to be annoyed - get yourself a couple of really good lines to come back with to let people know they're being dicks.

I felt so sorry for him and said absolutely nothing about his name.

This illustrates the issue because there was a time where that book was everywhere and SO so popular, then a TV series, it peaked mid-80s. I bet that most people under the age of what- 40? - would have no idea who Adrian Mole is.

Alexa will pass eventually. They'll create some new model called something else and someone else will inherit the curse.

I'm @@ at the person called Jihad and feeling sorry for Isis.

Westfacing · 28/03/2024 17:14

If it's really pissing you off maybe you can go by 'Alex' - just dropping the A makes it sound so unlike Alexa.

It would annoy me too - what is the matter with people!

Biffbaff · 28/03/2024 18:33

People need to stop naming things after women's names. It's irritating and doesn't happen with men's names in the same way.

It's because the app is a virtual assistant.
