To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

That’s nothing. My first name is Googlesearch.

SiouxLines · 30/03/2024 17:30

It’s not even funny though, is it? I get the link obvs but it’s not comical!!

OP I love your name, and I really love Lex / Lexi xxx

AliCB · 30/03/2024 17:34

I really wouldn't worry about it, just take it that they are ignorant to the fact that you have heard it so many times before, Alexa is a pretty name 😊. I had a girl back in my school days with the name Shirley Olive Dennis, needless to say she was teased a lot with those initials and she was a right S.O.D too 😀 There was also a boy with the name John Thomas 😂

Could be worse. I’ve a friend with an 18 year old called Isis.

Thing is, Isis is such a lovely name (a goddess, after all). It's such a shame it's now got such negative connotations.

MyDearOliveDuck · 30/03/2024 17:43

My surname means a very rude word in one of the Asian languages (not sure which one) and I hate being asked for it by Asians. I tend to just give my first name or even my maiden name. My daughters were told this by an Asian taxi driver years ago. He thought it was very funny.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 30/03/2024 17:44

I know a couple who went on hols to Sweden and heard a name there which was really unusual and unique here so decided to call their daughter Elsa. Frozen was released the same year.

Mondaymorningtoday · 30/03/2024 17:47

Years ago, a girl in my school was called Tangerine. It didn't seem to bother her, though, as she was always known as Tangy (pronounced Tanjy) which I thought sounded cool.

That's such a strange reaction from medical staff and very unprofessional. Alexa is a lovely name that unfortunately has been taken over by Amazon.

I second that, so unprofessional. They should get some feedback - that’s not normal behaviour from HCP. What a disgrace!
I don’t actually find it funny - Alexa is a very normal name, it’s like mocking Annabelle because of a stupid horror movie or Henry because of the vacuum cleaner 🤷🏻‍♀️
I would call it every single out - it’s so rude!
<hugs>

Are you actually going to tell us what your name is? Otherwise this thread is going to be so annoying. As annoying as the stick you get for your name.

Can you really not work it out?

DutyBound · 30/03/2024 17:49

Must be beyond irritating.

I guess the positive thing is that it immediately identifies people best avoided, great little filter...

wasdarknowblond · 30/03/2024 17:51

Oh I feel for you. In the 60s I was constantly asked where Frederick was. It drove me mad!! I just used to sigh and roll my eyes. My name has long been forgotten now - unless you are quite old like me. Sending a hug. 🤗

Not unreasonable. I would give your name and if they mock it, give them a cold stare until they stop.

She has given her name. It's in her username. And if you can't work it out from that there are further clues in her post. And if you STILL can't work it out it's been said about 100 times throughout the comments.

And if you still can't work it out - it's Alexa. (Assuming you've read this far).

Moll2020 · 30/03/2024 17:58

I fuc*ing hate that some idiotic American has tried to ruin my name by likening it to all middle aged, fat, racist white women. I went through a stage of being embarrassed about my name but not now, I stand up for my name, I’m not what the idiot Americans think. Be proud of your name, don’t let the ignorant bastards grind you down.

Primmyhill · 30/03/2024 18:01

I honestly don’t think being called Alexa is remotely funny and it wouldn’t even cross my mind to ridicule someone. It’s a lovely name. Just shows the mentality of some people. I’m very tall and used to get strangers commenting on my height, had it at job interviews, meetings etc and it used to annoy me. It’s not as bad now as I think people are a bit more PC but I still get the odd comment (usually from very small men!).

I'm not changing my name, I'm too old for that crap.

It just gets irritating when you hear the same "jokes" daily.

Just needed a moan that's all....

I can well imagine it would get tiresome hearing it all the time. It is a lovely name, when I began reading your post I was trying to guess what it could possibly be, I didn't immediately jump to Alexa.

I agree with another poster who said that maybe they're not laughing AT your name, more like laughing along the lines of 'I bet that makes life interesting.' Unfortunately people wouldn't perhaps consider that you've heard it all before and as such it might become annoying.

Nope I hadn’t read the whole thread. Yes I read this far because I was quoted. ‘Still can’t work it out’ repeated is a bit insulting - like I’m mega stupid when actually CBA to read whole threads. Finally, why does it bother you so much? You could have just said ‘she’s called Alexa’ in which case I probably would have replied ‘ ok , silly me, I should put my brain in gear before posting’. 🙄

Michael Fish?

This was my first thought until the Amazon comment!

Oh my, not sure whether to laugh or to cry. That is why they say the wrong name can actually ruin your life. I surely hope I chose the right one for my boy.

Funny - we have people in this thread... and then we have people like you :-) and then we wonder where this world is going???

Mylifesadrama · 30/03/2024 18:13

Why don’t you just change your name by deed poll. It’s around £20 ish online. I did it myself to change my surname. I’ve spent 50+ years of people questioning the spelling of my name, drives me mad, but it was my late dad’s mistake when registering my birth, and I’ve grown to like it.
