To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

Really unprofessional and stupid for people to laugh at that. I’m a nurse and would probably not comment as would assume you’re tired of daft jokes/comments

Mt thoughts. You don't need this in the setting you're in.

Ramalangadingdong · 30/03/2024 22:58

People are idiots. What's so funny about being called Alexa? It's a really nice name.

GoBonobo · 30/03/2024 22:58

redalex261 · 27/03/2024 20:09

That’s nothing. I have seen some stunningly bad forenames on paperwork. For example:

Yaris.(FGS, just go with Paris)
Sierra Cosworth (1st & middle name, clearly in honour of that eighties iconic vehicle)
Ocean (just why? especially partnered with a surname something like McClunkybum….)
Kennethina (the very worst of the ones where the parents wanted a boy)
Chardonnay (I am not kidding, blame Footballer’s Wives)
Armani & Jazz (siblings)
Khalessi (Game of Thrones anyone?)

So count yourself lucky, Alexa is a lovely name. No need for fiddling round with deed poll changes!

The ‘boys name-ina’ is quite a traditional Scottish thing. I had an older auntie called Robina (Ruby) also knew a similar aged Thomasina (Tibbie), and countless ‘Ina’s who might have been anything (Davidina, Adamina and Donaldina are some that I’ve heard). So could well be a family thing, though I don’t think it is used much now outside the Highlands and Islands.

Raffles76 · 30/03/2024 23:00

It’s a cool name and people are twats - my name is Alexandra and I like it when friends occasionally call me Alexa for short! Just roll your eyes when people laugh and say “I’ve never heard that one before”. It’s not as though it wasn’t a name for decades before AI came about so I don’t know why people get so excited. X

PotatoPudding · 30/03/2024 23:07

I would put in a complaint. You don’t expect this from professionals. I have a name that was uncommon in the 80s but was used in the name of a food and a shop. Both ceased to exist about 20 years ago (when I was mid-20s) and you wouldn’t believe how many people would say the name of the food or the shop and laugh, each one saying it like they were the first person to think of it. People are so disrespectful.

SweetDreamsAreMadeOf · 30/03/2024 23:14

I used to work with a Thomas Thomas (i.e. first name and surname)...I was desperate to ask him if his parents had ever indicated why! Seriously who does that to their kid!?

We also used to have a someone that worked at one of our suppliers that was named Mark Moist (which is unfortunate enough in itself), but because of the way the company email system was set up it appeared in Outlook as 'Moist, Mark', cue lots of jokes (not to his face), about having a moist mark in our inboxes...

You could have it worse 🤣

Karen?

Edit: missed the amazon bit! Alexa then!

I have a friend called Karen and she absolutely hates it now. People constantly smirk and ask if she is one.

Edited

I hate this, the ruining of the name Karen is a symptom of the misogyny directed towards older women, because older women won't put up with the sort of crap they used to when they were young. But it's become acceptable to abuse older women by calling them a Karen, and your friend has been taught to dislike her perfectly acceptable name by those arseholes

Jenny Taylor

RecklessGoddess · 30/03/2024 23:58

I don't blame you for being angry, it's extremely unprofessional for any staff member, in any occupation, to laugh at patients or customers names. I don't see how it's so funny, who cares if the name matches a popular AI, or anything else for that matter! It's not like you're called Frogmella, Spudulika or another ridiculous name!

Wincey (Willis)
shows age

Wincey Willis went to school with my mam, and her real name was Winsome Dimmock!

TerriPie · 31/03/2024 00:44

Started off thinking 'Michael Fish' but glad I read to the end 🤣

Agentdanascullyx · 31/03/2024 02:04

I absolutely love the name Alexa! My name’s Alison - I’ve had no end of Alice in wonderland jokes, when I say Alice and Alison are different names, I get ‘oh it’s the same’ No it’s not, I feel your pain op

We had a Fernando Fernandus
and a
Brenda Penda

DingoWoodworm · 31/03/2024 04:26

I too thought Michael Fish until
the end. 🤣

useitorlose · 31/03/2024 05:18

I'm a teacher and we once had Alexa and Siri in the same class (international school).

Yes, this! I worked with Mohamed Mohamed. Some parents, really. But he is Arabic, so obviously in a different culture this is probably not unusual.

Rottweilermummy · 31/03/2024 06:11

I know an Alexa too, would never occur to other people I worked with to make fun of her name or anyone else's, and certainly not a patient. maybe next time member of staff comes up to you start laughing at their name

GoldEagle · 31/03/2024 08:06

How flaming unprofessional not to mention rude of the medical staff, but a sad indication of falling standards in every section of society.

Julianne65 · 31/03/2024 08:16

I don’t understand why they would laugh. It’s a lovely name. I don’t even think of Amazon when I think of the name Alexa. I think of Alexa Chung who is really
cool!

ChatLike · 31/03/2024 08:18

I don’t even associate Alexa with Amazon. I think of Alexa Chung if anything. It’s a great name. The staff were unprofessional.

And I would cringe so much at anyone who found this funny. Probably the same ones on MN who snort their tea out at banal comments and are easily amused. The only person I can imagine doing this irl is my dad and he is a socially incompetent idiot.

ChatLike · 31/03/2024 08:24

I am cringeing at all the people saying, could be worse eg Siri, Google etc with laughing emojis. Do they really think they are being original or funny? 🤯

Ocean Ramsey seems to manage just fine.
Patience is a very traditional name from the 1600s no less, not that it should matter, ridiculing names is not OK regardless.

Parents registering their babies with stupid and ridiculous ‘names’ is not OK either.

amusedbush · 31/03/2024 08:52

I think it's a beautiful name and it's a shame it's now synonymous with the Amazon speaker. I was obsessed with Alexa Chung in my late teens/early 20s and Mulberry recently re-launched their bag named after her.

Selfishly, I'm a bit nervous about my name (Jessica) being ruined the same way Karen has. I've noticed a trend on social media where my name is being used as the Millennial version of a "Karen", and I saw a Tiktok where someone was stopping people in the street to ask them the bitchiest name, and most people immediately said Jessica Easter Sad

amusedbush · 31/03/2024 08:57

Retiredfromearlyyears · 30/03/2024 19:30

Could've been Siri! 😆 🤣

Siri is a name though, and laughing at it is just as rude as laughing at Alexa.

There is a very popular creator on Tiktok called Siiri Parks.

It’s a Welsh thing too although less common nowadays. Years ago common for boys to be called Lewis Lewis or William Williams!
