To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

It sucks as I've always loved the name for a baby name but it's totally off the cards now. But you are not being unreasonable. Like you say fuck Amazon 🤦🏼‍♀️

I thought Karen and my name is Karen. My 10 yr old grandson thinks it’s a load of rubbish about Karens and I’m the nicest person he knows. That’ll do for me 🤷‍♀️

I always think of the scary Disney film Watcher in the Woods as the ghostly girl was called Karen. Still my favourite film (even though it has aged poorly)!

Funnily enough the pariah name from a few years ago was Sharon, which rhymes with Karen. Did Darren ever get a bad rap…?!

MrsWimpy · 31/03/2024 09:18

DD has a classmate called Alexa. In lockdown when they were all online learning , every time the teacher said her name about 20 devices went off asking what she wanted 🫣

TealPoet · 31/03/2024 10:01

It’s horrible to laugh at anyone’s name. Professional people should know and do better. They aren’t five year olds in a playground 😰

Busybee44 · 31/03/2024 10:29

If it is Alexa, I'd just say Alexis to stop the jokes

Jessieshome · 31/03/2024 10:38

Alexa is a lovely name. That is incredibly moronic of the hospital staff. I would make a proper complaint, it's completely unprofessional and unacceptable behaviour.

Eastre · 31/03/2024 10:43

You want to try being in my position, my name is so “hilarious” that I’m actually changing it legally. I’ve had hassle everywhere I’ve gone for years and nobody believes it’s my real name.

outing but - Annabelle Lecter. Obviously I’ve gone by Belle for years

Beautiful3 · 31/03/2024 10:48

I don't have an Alexa so honestly didn't make that connection. I actually had to read the thread to find out! Alexa is a lovely name. Lots of cars/technology/trainers etc are named after people/gods. I'm suprised people do that to you, because the name was around a long time before amazon's product.

Karen?

Edit: missed the amazon bit! Alexa then!

I have a friend called Karen and she absolutely hates it now. People constantly smirk and ask if she is one.

Edited

The Karen meme has got boring.
just another way of society shutting down women with an opinion!

‘okay Karen’
’stop being a Karen’ etc …

T1Dmama · 31/03/2024 11:13

You’ve not actually said what your name is… I don’t believe for a moment that Alexa on its own would generate so many jokes?!…
Now that your procedure is done and hopefully a success I would be lodging a complaint and saying how unprofessional you felt it was if staff to mock your name in such a childish and belittling manor!
I would absolutely call people out on it.. just a simple ‘oh… because I’ve never heard that one before!’ Would turn the joke back on them and make them feel very daft and unoriginal !!

Which part will you change?
It is unfortunate when parents name their children without much insight!

At school I had a teacher called Sue Spender! (She was a miss so hadn’t married into that surname)
My brother went to school with a Jamie James… and my dad went to school with a Robin Hood!

You hear of people with the surname Davison naming their kid Harley and you just think what morons the parents are… there was a post on mumsnet not long ago where a woman was asking if she was wrong for not wanting to call her unborn son Ted Bundy! (Theodore) because her husband and inlaws were pressuring her too! I do hope she held her ground and refused to call the poor kid that!

Coffeewinecake · 31/03/2024 11:30

@NotAmazonAlexa I am a medical professional and I am shocked to hear that you have had this experience. I can’t imagine any of my colleagues commenting, let alone laughing. I would definitely complain, totally inappropriate behaviour and it is belittling at a time when you are vulnerable.

DianaTaverner · 31/03/2024 11:31

MyDearOliveDuck · 30/03/2024 17:43

My surname means a very rude word in one of the Asian languages (not sure which one) and I hate being asked for it by Asians. I tend to just give my first name or even my maiden name. My daughters were told this by an Asian taxi driver years ago. He thought it was very funny.

Surely in that situation you'd go to the effort of Googling and find out which particular language it's a problem in? "Asian" covers 60% of the world's population, whereas even if it was Mandarin that's only about 15%.

wulzcat23 · 31/03/2024 08:59

It’s a Welsh thing too although less common nowadays. Years ago common for boys to be called Lewis Lewis or William Williams!

Yes I've got a Thomas Thomas in the Welsh part of my family tree.

coastalguy · 31/03/2024 11:41

Change your name by deed poll
GOV.UK
www.gov.uk › change-name-deed-poll

It costs £48.32.

or use Ale (Alley) it sounds lovely spoken, as a shortened version

TinkerTiger · 31/03/2024 11:43

Change you name to Siri.

Kklasd808 · 31/03/2024 12:26

If I were you next time someone upsets you say Alexa says " I can recommend some surgeon's who do face lifts"

It hardly new, for example the name 'Jesse' use to be used derogatorily for boys etc... just watch any Billy Connelly stand up.

ChatLike · 31/03/2024 12:35

It’s just not even funny. And laughing at people’s names is so damn rude. Some people are really thick. Even names like Ocean are hardly that unusual or funny in 2024.

Don’t change your name. Alexa is a great cool name. Other people are idiots.

Elly46 · 31/03/2024 12:36

I think it’s a beautiful name. Wouldn’t cross my mind to think of the Alexa machine until mentioned. The people who mock your name must be quite small minded.

ChatLike · 31/03/2024 12:38

Do people live under a rock and only have Amazon for company? The fact idiots can only associate Alexa with a website says more about their narrow-mindedness than anything else. I can’t believe people are suggesting you change your name or turn it into Alexis 🤯

Even Isis doesn’t need changing fgs. Really people need to judge names less. And I say that as someone with a bland name and pretty standard kids’ names.

JoeLovesGina · 31/03/2024 12:39

YABU to use the word "pissed" if you mean "pissed off". Really pisses me off.

MyDearOliveDuck · 31/03/2024 13:07

I tried googling it but it came up with Arabic lettering which I don't understand.

MyDearOliveDuck · 31/03/2024 13:10

I went to school with a Susan Smellie and a Susan Rood! Alexa is a very pretty name.

Skybluepinky · 31/03/2024 20:31

Sounds made up
