To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Very unprofessional behaviour from the hospital staff. As pp said, a hard stare is all you need as a response to such stupidity.

Alexia is such a lovely name. Don't let them make you feel you have to change it, or, as pp suggested, call yourself something like Alex.

If anything her name makes me think of the Mulberry Alexa handbag, therefore Alexa Chung, so chic, classic and stylish.

The problem is, people will think they're the first person to ever have made a joke.

I had a woman on my team called Alexa in my previous job, and every fucking time we had a team meeting it kicked my Alexa off - I always forgot to turn it off until it happened the first time.. and when the woman was first addressed, everyone's would go off haha.

You've got to practice the hard stare and slow single.eyebrow raise. Totally ridiculous of them.

I recently taught an Alexa. Lovely girl lovely name.

I used to know someone who called her daughter Alexa, I have thought about them actually and wondered if this sort of thing happens. I also walk in a park where there's a Dog called Isis.

There's no way that appropriate for NHS staff to react like that. I can't believe that. That's awful.

Tbh if your name is Alexa ( I’ve seen adverts so I know what it is ) it wouldn’t occur to me to laugh. I wouldn’t even put the two together.

Alexa isn't weird, if it really super bothers you you could use deedpoll to add may an 's' to the end and be Alexas.

There a boy at DS school called Karren, his family are middle eastern immigrants so I assume its cultural but first time I saw it I did think 'poor kid, not just a girls name here but one with such a big cultural reputation'.

The only name I would raise an eyebrow on is Kennethina, the rest to me aren’t bad. Not everyone has the same connotations when it comes to names or cares to the point that they would ridicule or think lesser of someone because of it.

Trained??? You can not be trained to be kind or respectful. You either are or you are not. And those who can not be, should not be working with people in the first place.

Ocean is ridiculous as a name for a human being. I can’t imagine an adult being taken seriously with a ‘name’ like that.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with the name Karen? It’s a normal name and far better than stupid ‘names’ like Gift, Patience, Apple, Ocean, Paris.

Alexa sounds like a normal name to me.

Gift, Patience - culturally appropriate names in many west African countries. Just because it sounds silly to you doesn’t mean it is- not very nice to call names stupid. There isn’t just one English speaking culture.
