To wonder which way the vote will go?

There'll be a general election this year and there's been such a lot of chat everywhere about the Torys losing.

I'd love to think this will be the case, but was thinking where will the votes go! I've always voted labour, and will again, but is there a chance the Torys might get back in?

Maybe there's a big set of silent voters who'll vote them back!

Is the consensus here that they will lose? And if so, to labour?

I have zero hope we will get Tories out. Looking at worldwide elections it seems no matter how dodgy a candidate is, people vote them back in time and time again. I think something pretty extraordinary would have to happen for things to change.

This is my fear too…I’m in Scotland so we have the idiots voting SNP which will bolster the Tory vote away from Labour because FREEEEEEDUMB

concernedchild · 27/03/2024 16:07

@neverbeenskiing but labour don't care about me either. I'm on to qualify as a solicitor and have a decent salary, and they won't help me then, will they? And they won't help the lower earners either.

This! There is no alternative. Labour as basically the monster raving looney party reincarnated. I read something about a party called Reform. Maybe I'll vote for them.

Sorry what and what- Labour Party are what and you’ve only just heard of Reform?

Redlarge · 27/03/2024 16:08

HardyJoker · 27/03/2024 15:09

With the stupidity and ignorance of so many people in this country I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Labour got in. In my opinion there should be a higher age requirement on voting because of this

Yeah, make it even more shit for the young. Take power from them and ringfence it for older people. In fact, why dont we just keep the votes for men like the good old days.

Redlarge · 27/03/2024 16:08

I'm a single issue floating voter.
my issue us womens rights and as such I'll be voting Tory.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha 😂 😄 😆

mathanxiety · 27/03/2024 16:09

Sixty three Tory MPs will stand down and not run again in the next election. Some are formerly leading figures - Sajid Javid, Theresa May, Ben Wallace, Kwasi Kwarteng, Adam Afriye (sitting on a majority of over 20k), Sir Graham Brady...

An additional four have had the whip removed and will not run again.

It's a case of the rats deserting the sinking ship, and there will likely be more. The last time this happened was ahead of Labour's 1997 win.

midgetastic · 27/03/2024 16:10

To vote for someone because they are "on the right" does seem stupid reason to me

The tories have had 14 years in power in this last stint

Indeed over the last 120 years labour have only been in power for ~ 30 - Of which 5 or 6 were the seminal post war years that started so much good stuff

Now do you think that things will be getting better if we give the tories yet more time ?

Stupid is repeating the same mistake over and over and hoping for a different result

MaloneMeadow · 27/03/2024 15:03

Why should older people get to decide on policy when they’re not the ones that will have to bear the brunt of it for many years to come? It was the exact same situation with Brexit

Older people don't get to decide. They make up a third of the electorate if that. You would have something to complain about if the voting age were raised to, say, 65

Janehasamane · 27/03/2024 16:11

It’s very left leaning on here, or the left leaning are very vocal, the tories, supporters remain silent. I think when it comes to a ge, Tory could take it, voters don’t give the bloody nose they do at locals. Starmer and cronies just haven’t mounted a credible defense, so it’s better th4 devil, you know.

Yeah I don't really keep up with politics all the time - had a letter through the door about Reform in my area looks pretty good. Labour have no tangible policies that I can see would benefit me. Their MPs past and present have put me off for life too. Jeremy corbyn and the ginger woman and the lady who wore odd shoes everywhere have done me. I'm out on Labour party.

Generally why labour seldom win. People aren’t stupid.

It is now a 99% certainty that Labour will get into power according to a polling expert.

Eta: Professor Sir John Curtice is the pollster. I couldn't remember his name!

Very well said. Of course die-hard Tory voters like @CroftonWillow are delusional enough to believe their own stupidity

The ageism at both ends on this thread is unreal.

Taise the voting age to stop people voting Labour? Come on,

Janehasamane · 27/03/2024 16:15

CroftonWillow · 27/03/2024 16:02

To say anyone voting Tory, the only viable party on the right, is stupid and ignorant suggests there is a mere trace of left wing in you.

And this is why this forum becomes an echo chamber , people come on with no rational argument or ability to,provide one and hurl abuse, half a brain, stupid, ignorant. It simply makes the silent majority reading think they don’t want to be associated with that, if that’s what labour looks like.

Hyperion100 · 27/03/2024 16:16

I honestly dont see how anyone that hasnt been living under a rock for the last 14 years can cast their vote for more of the same under another conservative government.

  • National debt more than doubled since 2010 to over 2.5 trillion approaching 100% of GDP.
  • NHS in tatters (and yes there is more money going in but they are including the 37 billion for test and trace - effectively laundering public money in to their pals pockets)
  • Schools crumbling
  • Rivers and oceans literally full of shit
  • Immigration the highest its ever been
  • Society divided along so many lines I've lost track
  • Roads look like open strip mines
  • Inward investment fallen off a cliff
  • Foodbank usage off the charts

And all this with record high taxation.

Where the hell is the money going?

Parliament will be dominated by Tories. They'll just have different coloured rosettes. Same fiscal rules, same donors, same taxes, same cuts to services & welfare.

GingerReader · 27/03/2024 16:18

MaloneMeadow · 27/03/2024 15:53

Not lefty in the slightest, actually right wing until a few years ago but good try! Neither party is a good option but it’s about making the best of a bad situation - the Torys have completely decimated public services over the last 14 years and have lost control of their own party, why would anyone with half a brain want that back in government?

Want to reiterate this - Tory’s have wiped out so much vital support for babies, children and young people. I have to believe that Labour will at least care a bit more about creating and maintaining services for the most vulnerable in our society.

concernedchild · 27/03/2024 16:20

@GingerReader they won't. They're selling themselves as Tory light

64% of 18-24s voted in Brexit Referendum.

And yet this generation of people now, are the ones who have been shouting the loudest about the result being LEAVE. (When a THIRD of them didn't vote!)

While I think you have a point, I don't think Labour will be as wantonly cruel.

I also think Labour won't sell the NHS down the river, but Streeting needs to go as he is in the wrong party and is not a good person.

Ineedaweewee · 27/03/2024 16:21

To be fair to the PP, there is a huge issue in this country that the policies that benefit our ageing population also screw over the younger generations. My chances of owning a home have been screwed because of the boomers who bought property like it was going out of fashion. Something needs to change rather than allowing a section of the population ruin the future generations.

So how do you feel about these awful’boomer’ parents who allow their children to stay at home for free and help pay towards their exams and upkeep?
You do realise that ‘Boomer’ is a very derogatory expression aimed at older people who worked their arses off to own a home without all the new furniture m decor ,gadgets that are expected these days .
How did the above generation know what would happen in 30-40 years time ?
Have you got a crystal ball to know how this country will be economically in 30-40 years time?
