They're 45 quid. It's a water bottle. I just don't get it.

metal straws very dangerous! someone impaled themselves on one while drinking. I would never use them for this reason.

I wonder how many people who have recently discovered that one of these is the key to health and happiness will still be using it in five years time.

I've used one every day for almost four years – admittedly about a year ago I replaced the original one (which was smaller so I had to fill it 4 times a day) with the fake Stanley, but the concept is the same!

Lol
my husband wouldn’t be doing that for me

Oh, that makes sense ! I wondered what the maker of Stanley knives were doing going into cup manufacture. Just read up on it, genius marketing going for the paid influencer route and not branding it with the Stanley yellow/black.

It’s of its time.

It's not the same company.

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 27/03/2024 10:07

Their marketing is on point though.

I saw on TikTok the owner of a car that had gone up in flames. When they got back into the car their Stanley cup was in the cup holder and still had ice in it! 😂

https://www.tiktok.com/@danimarielettering/video/7301724587488759070

Cue a bit of a PR spin where Stanley actually bought them a new car and rode on the wave of publicity, no doubt making far more sales than the cost of the new car!

TediousMansplainer · 27/03/2024 10:09

Having read this I feel less bad about having a Chilly's water bottle, I thought that was a ridiculous extravagance.

The water bottles that scare me are those 2.2 litre ones with lines on telling you how much you should have drunk by each hour of the day. I could never drink that much water!

bananabreadbatshit · 27/03/2024 10:14

We are a yeti household and here's why...

Hot stuff stays hot
Cold stuff stays cold
Dishwasher safe
Completely indestructible - pretty sure one with a handle could be classed as a personal protection device.
Fit in car cup holders
Have interchangeable lids so can be coffee cups, straw spouts, foldable straws or flask type lids.

Cannot imagine life without them. Fill it with water in the morning then hand it over for take away coffee etc and then rinse it out and use it for water again.

I never "carry" mine around by hand unless it's a quick journey from car to door but I do usually have a kids one banging about in the bottom of my handbag.

Have even been known to shove kids leftovers in them at restaurants as a kind of doggy bag or for taking warm snacks out on wintery trips to the park.

10+ years in and our Yetis are still going strong.

I feel you! Canadiens fan here, also bottom of their division. Again.

Flyers fan here anxiously watching the wheels wobble, ready to fall off just in time to miss the playoffs and a shot at the actual Stanley Cup Grin

acatcalledjohn · 27/03/2024 10:29

These cups really make adults look like overgrown toddlers.

It also baffles me when they argue that it helps them to drink enough water. As if a £5 water bottle from any retailer doesn't.

OssieShowman · 27/03/2024 10:29

In Australia, it’s the Frank Green drink bottle.
Must have, all the rage. Followed secondly by Stanley.
$80 plus for a drink bottle! What’s wrong with a $15 bottle from K mart.
i just don’t get it.

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 27/03/2024 10:34

and by the end of the day I find I’ve drunk the full 1.2L

So you're still chronically dehydrated by the end of the day then...because just over a litre is nowhere near enough.

Just be a grown up, get a glass or any bottle and fill it from the tap several times a day.

To me it will only ever be the NHL ice hockey championship trophy.

Exactly what came into my head as well. An enormous cup for men who fight on ice rinks.

I don't use a straw, but surely as long as you're not being silly, they aren't dangerous? It's like saying metal forks are dangerous - only if you're not using it properly. Or a knife is dangerous because you can cut yourself with it.

ArcticOwl · 27/03/2024 10:44

i dont use Stanley, i have the tiktok knock off brand one.. Meoky. Does the same thing and only cost me £10.

I like it because it really does keep water cold, i can't stand water at room temp, so filling that up and plonking it on my desk means i have cold water all day.

Imagine you slipped while using it? It's a bit different to the shape of a fork etc which you're generally sitting down while using. This is a rigid tube that can go up into your brain.

Not worth the risk IMO and especially unsuitable for kids.

Apparently they also are more dangerous for teeth causing more chips to enamel etc.

Boy, 4, almost died after metal straw pierced his throat, tore artery to brain

The freak accident highlights the danger of metal straws, especially for children, doctors say.

Oh my god. This is perfect - you've literally put into words what I've failed to try and express... I have ADHD, when people say "just..." it drives me insane. It's not that simple. I forget to feed myself if I don't have a social cue or reminder. "Just eat when hungry/just have water when you're thirsty..." I don't even know when I'm thirsty or hungry for fucksake!

Thank you @Begsthequestion - I'm going to use your explanation more often.

Aw no problem! I totally understand. I also struggle with feeding myself regularly and drinking enough water. I can do it for someone else, but it often takes conscious thinking plus mammoth motivation for myself. It's not our fault, and doesn't make us stupid or immature. It's how our brains work.

You might notice more how often people dole out "just..." advice on so many things. I try to catch myself when I do it because to me it shows shallow thinking that is somewhat lacking in empathy.

SayFuckTheLemonsAndBail · 27/03/2024 10:49

I really don't understand why people are so offended by other people drinking water. Ok, you don't need to blow the best part of £50 on a status cup, but there's nothing wrong with drinking water regularly/taking steps to make sure you'll remember to drink water regularly.

Your brain isn't going to swell up because you drank a few litres of water a day. And yeah, you probably won't die of dehydration if you never drink any water, but you will likely get headaches, cracked lips, and knackered looking skin.

I don't leave the house without taking water with me, although I prefer something that fits easily in a bag. Is that really so outrageous to some people? Bizarre.

LuckySantangelo35 · 27/03/2024 10:49

Everyone who uses Stanley cups is gonna get loads of wrinkles around their mouth

I don’t think it’s worth it

even if you were just leaving the house for half an hour?!

Why not get some manners and read all the responses?

OK so I see that poster has ADHD.
Anyway, this isn’t what the thread is about.
It does seem strange that many people can’t drink enough if they only have a cheap cup, but if they have an expensive flask endorsed by influencers, then suddenly the problem is solved.

Yep.

Why on earth would anyone take time out of their day to care about that?

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 26/03/2024 22:21

I confess I really did think you meant the ice hockey trophy. The Stanley Cup is like the FA Cup, or the Ashes or the Super Bowl. It’s massively famous.

Has a company really used that name? Seems a bit daft.

Ice Hockey Sport GIF by NHL

Stanley, as in makers of the Stanley knife. A tool company.

But yeah, my head instantly goes to the hockey championship.
