To not get the Stanley Cup thing

They're 45 quid. It's a water bottle. I just don't get it.

I love mine. I drink squash and plastic water bottles all taste of squash after a period of time and stain, whereas this doesn’t. I also prefer to drink from a straw, other water bottles make the straw really difficult to clean.

I normally get a bottle, after a while decide that it’s not clean and then it joins the bottle graveyard. It’s expensive but I’ve probably saved money as I’ve stuck to the same bottle.

Chilli cup for coffee (original not the weird new style) and Stanley for squash. Happy to die on this hill.

NotQuiteUsual · 27/03/2024 08:54

I don't get the weird cup things. But I have a massive Stanley thermos and I bloody love it. Hot chocolate on cold days out, cold squash on hot days out. I used to take it on school trips and managed to give hot chocolate to a class of ten and the teachers with spare. Worth every penny.

I assume the appeal is something similar but on a more personal scale?

Comedycook · 27/03/2024 08:55

You see loads of these cringe worthy influencers with them...I fell down a social media rabbit hole I'm afraid. Cannot bear the type...with their neutral coloured gym gear, grey houses, 4x4s, tiny dogs, and filling up their Stanley cup and tapping it with their annoying clicky nails.... ahhhh

I confess I really did think you meant the ice hockey trophy. The Stanley Cup is like the FA Cup, or the Ashes or the Super Bowl. It’s massively famous.

Has a company really used that name? Seems a bit daft.

The Stanley brand has a rich 100+ year history. Born from inventor William Stanley Jr. who forever changed the way hot drinks were consumed, in 1913 he fused vacuum insulation and the strength of steel in one portable bottle. This is where the name came from.

I did pay about £20 for very 'good' steel water bottle which really does keep water cold for hours - amazing on a hot maternity ward. But the stanley ones look a bit mad. I saw young women walking around the shopping centre nearly hugging them at the weekend.

No harm though, it's a fad and not a harmful one

I've heard some nonsense in my time...and "I need a Stanley cup otherwise I'll shrivel up.", is some of it.

They were designed for lorry drivers on long haul. The narrow bottom fits in the cup holder and the large handle and straw makes them easy to pick up and drink from.

If it makes you happy I suppose.

Oh, that makes sense ! I wondered what the maker of Stanley knives were doing going into cup manufacture. Just read up on it, genius marketing going for the paid influencer route and not branding it with the Stanley yellow/black.

It’s of its time.

Yeah, I get the Stanley drinking stuff company name now. And that it’s different to Stanley tools. But the Stanley Cup is unrelated to either as far as I know. Wiki says the Stanley Cup competition was named after a former Governor General of Canada.

It was just what ‘Stanley Cup’ in the thread title first made me think of, that’s all.

So many kids at the primary I teach in are coming in with these very silly air up bottles. Talk about gimmick!!

Mould factories! Not changing that disc for a week means the water/mould under it is gross

WildRosesForCathy · 26/03/2024 22:14

I have to say that mine is the best water bottle I've ever had, I didn't pay £45 for it though.

Can you explain what differentiates it from all the other water bottles you previously owned?

There will always be overpriced "fashion" and there will always be people insecure enough about their image to buy it.

Why not get some manners and read all the responses?

peachgreen · 27/03/2024 09:26

I've got a fake one and it's great. I fill one up in the morning, make sure it's finished by lunchtime, refill and make sure I'm done before I go to bed. Cold water on hand all day and it makes sure I get my 2.5l.

ManchesterLu · 27/03/2024 09:27

It's just like every other trend. You get some influencers showing they use it, and before you know it, it's taken off. Just look at Prime and the like. The amount kids were paying for one bottle of the stuff is ridiculous!

DarkDarkNight · 27/03/2024 09:29

I hate these crazes because people just move on to the next thing and what was meant to be a sustainable eco-conscious bottle becomes landfill. The problem is people aren’t just buying one (or even 2), they buy collections of them.

People's cupboards must just be full of absolute crap when they move on to the next "thing"

tkwal · 27/03/2024 09:33

They are an American thing. Americans are (generally) accustomed to having larger drinks that we are. This particular brand arose because people travelling large distances (truckers, business travellers, people moving from coast to coast by road or rail) needed to stay hydrated and its easier to do so if your beverage is pleasant to consume, hence the insulation.
From reviews I have read its the best available here although personally I'd prefer something easier to carry around.

Dryt · 27/03/2024 09:37

I wonder how many people who have recently discovered that one of these is the key to health and happiness will still be using it in five years time.

Ogam · 27/03/2024 09:40

Do they fit in the car drinks holder?

I have a plastic water bottle from Amazon with a straw which was about £6. It’s ok but it tells me it’s a litre when it’s actually only 700ml capacity. When I get to the end of the bottle though the water does taste a bit weird- presume the plastic bottle is to blame. Any water bottle recommendations that aren’t £45?! My daughter has an air up- total waste of money. If she doesn’t start using it I’ll just steal that even if I do look like an idiot with it. I’ll remember to clean it though after reading about the mould under the scent thing!

concernedchild · 27/03/2024 09:40

I got mine for £3 off TikTok shop. I thought it was a scam but it arrived. I love it purely because it encourages me to drink more water

Saturday Night Live did an excellent skit on this

Biiiiig cuuuuuup….. you can taste the bacteria….

Thanks for mentioning this. Very funny!! 🤣

Topsyturvy78 · 27/03/2024 09:43

I don't get it either. But it's the thought of the straw being there all day uncovered exposed to germs. If I get a water bottle I like the spout to be covered.

ConcernedOfClapham · 27/03/2024 09:50

Yep, thought this was about Ice Hockey from a North American poster.

Never heard of this other one I’m afraid.

ButterflyTable · 27/03/2024 09:57

I’ve not seen a single one! And I live in a very naice area!
