They're 45 quid. It's a water bottle. I just don't get it.

@Begsthequestion
Hardly ableist when PP had failed to yet drip feed she had adhd when I commented, life must be very boring when you're trawling threads looking to be offended.

You can't help but insult others it seems.

I do like to stick up for others when I see them being unfairly treated.

If that means your insults are deleted, then so be it.

SD1978 · 30/03/2024 21:01

I can understand them (ish) if they never left the house. It's basically a big glass of water. The need to take them out tickles me. They are not leakproof, have to be held upright at all times, and are oversized. Just why. I don't see it as a status symbol lugging a large metal cup around, but utterly daft

This thread is so symptomatic of the tiresome trend in modern discourse where literally EVERYTHING is turned into accusations of ableism. I think it’s making the rest of us a bit impatient/cynical and is wearing out our sympathy, frankly.

2025 discourse:

Person A: Slavery is a bad thing. It’s wrong for people to own slaves or for society to create systems of slave ownership.

Person B: Can I just remind everyone, gently, that there are many people on this earth who actually benefit from slave ownership? I’m sorry you appear to be incapable of putting yourself into other people’s shoes, but disabilities and chronic illnesses can mean that some people are simply not able to take care of themselves or live a decent life without a personal slave. Not everyone has relatives or friends who can help out. The ableism on this site is getting so exhausting.

(OK, a bit silly, but par for the course. I’ve actually seen things like prostitution of women being justified because “for some disabled men, this is the only way they can enjoy sexual intimacy,” and companies like SHEIN (which are known to use actual slave labor) being defended on the grounds that “some people’s weight fluctuates a lot, so they need to buy cheap clothes multiple times a year”).

JMSA · 31/03/2024 00:55

It's down to personal choice. I'd never judge someone for their choice of water bottle. I'd be more inclined to think 'good on them for downing enough water!'
You'll always get the 'more money than sense' brigade. Chances are they own a Regatta rain jacket, for example, while some of us prefer something less basic.
Each to their own.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 31/03/2024 17:12

Ahh, we show our age when we get like this…

I said the same about the Prime trend, kids wearing sportswear everywhere and crocs. Then I remembered we all did the thing back in the day too, whether it be the shell suit, baggy cargo pants, perm, Stussy, etc etc etc. it’s a tale as old as time.

I just think what has caused the confusion now is we are watching much older people influenced by social media influencers then when we were younger and we are all just influenced by marketing and our peers.

Newsenmum · 31/03/2024 17:14

Why is it so good? Is it because it holds a lot?

Sorry but anyone who spends £45 on a water bottle must be absolutely bonkers!

They are for YouTubers who do things like put make up on or do their hair while talking to the camera and have recently developed specific hand gestures to help make whatever fascinating point they are making seem important.

Not the squashed hand! I'm 38, my work partner is 21, she does it. I walk away when the squashed claw is thrust in my face. The same for tapping her acrylics on everything! I've told her I'm invoicing her for loop earplugs so I don't have to listen to the tip tap tapping 8 hours a day!

Oh my god the tapping! On all the Facebook/ Instagram videos they tap everything, so so bizarre and makes me cringe and feel a bit ill now for some reason! Think it's the focus on the nails 😄.

Me and DD have Stanley cups and love them. We drink a lot through the day so it just means you have a drink on the go for longer and it keeps them really cold. It will be amazing in the summer. Not sure I'd take it out and about, apart from in the car maybe. And I didn't pay £45 for ours!

Lifeisapeach · 31/03/2024 23:28

I love mine! It was a gift and a bloody awesome gift. Yes it’s huge, yes it’s not functional, but it’s better than any other water bottle on the market that I have tried! (I’m no trend follower, I just love when something is really well made!)

CammyChameleon · 01/04/2024 00:26

They don't appeal to me, I walk most places so any bottle I take with me needs to go in my backpack without pissing water everywhere and I dislike straws anyway.

How can something be not functional but also better than any other water bottle on the market?

I think these massive, leaky things are designed for people who don't walk much. A person who walks and bikes wants something sensible sized and leakproof that will fit into a bag, rather than a car cupholder.

Mugaloaf · 01/04/2024 05:42

They don't sound as well insulated as a normal bottle. They only keep drinks cold for 6 hours. The free promo bottles I've been given keep drinks cold for 24 hours....🤷🏾‍♀️

Mugaloaf · 01/04/2024 06:17

Comedycook · 27/03/2024 08:55

You see loads of these cringe worthy influencers with them...I fell down a social media rabbit hole I'm afraid. Cannot bear the type...with their neutral coloured gym gear, grey houses, 4x4s, tiny dogs, and filling up their Stanley cup and tapping it with their annoying clicky nails.... ahhhh

I really hate clicky nails. The sound goes right through me.

Then surely you would buy a sporty leakproof bottle if you wanted it for walking/biking etc. that’s not what a Stanley is for so doesn’t compare. I use mine at home (I have three stories so saves me up and down stairs for cold water ), at work and on sunshine holidays. I have a different bottle I take to the gym. The Stanley keep my drinks cold for 12 hours advertised but actually it’s more like 24 hours. Haven’t found another water bottle that does the that. So each to their own.

I confess I really did think you meant the ice hockey trophy. The Stanley Cup is like the FA Cup, or the Ashes or the Super Bowl. It’s massively famous.

Has a company really used that name? Seems a bit daft.

I've never heard of the ice hockey cup, but ice hockey isn't a big thing here. If you Google 'Stanley Cup' the massively famous metal cups by the Stanley brand come up. The brand has been around over 100 years but has become really popular in the last year or so.

I assumed they were leak proof from the amount of videos I see of people taking them out of the house.. How odd.
We have chillies bottles, which are leak proof, and I do like that they keep drinks cold for 24 hours but I wouldn't use them at all if they weren't leak proof.

I hear you. You have to give the creators of this (and Yeti and similar brands) and their marketing people credit though. Absolute genius, such a boring everyday item going viral. And now they're keeping the buzz alive with stupid accessories and limited edition colours etc.

Agree re the Stanley but I have to defend the Yeti. Got a Yeti mug and lid for my birthday and it's an absolute god send. I fill it with coffee on my way to class at 7:30 and I can still have warm coffee by 11am break. It's super sturdy and the lid is awesome.

I wouldn't pay the cash for it myself (couldn't afford to) but it's been the best travel mug ever. On holidays, DH takes it into the garden when he's working and his coffee stays hot for an age!

user1477391263 · 01/04/2024 10:51

You can easily buy Thermos bottles that keep contents hot or cold, while also being leakproof and capable of being put into a bag, and not forcing you to sip through a silly straw all day long (which causes smokers' wrinkles, by the way).

If people could just admit "I like Instagram type stuff and influencers and I think it's fun to keep up with the latest trend, and yes, it'll probably gather dust once it's out of fashion," that would at least be honest.

CommentNow · 01/04/2024 11:04

I have an expensive water bottle (not stanley) and so does my 5 year old. They are indestructible and keep hot drinks and soup hot all day and cold drinks still have ice in them after school so top ups stay cold.

Never had a leak, despite dropping them on concrete. And because they are expensive we make sure we dont lose them.

100% dishwasher safe so easy to clean.

Its nice to have nice things and not worry about having multiple plastic water bottles that need replacing when children drop them.

I save a fortune on commuting coffee and single use plastics so for me it's worth it.

Sure. I think it was the way the title was written “…Stanley Cup…” with capitals. When I said it was famous I meant generally in the world, not particularly in Britain. In the same way the Super Bowl is famous even though American Football isn’t a sport played much outside the US.

But I now know all about the Stanley Quencher! Not that I’ll be getting one.

Can people explain why it’s so good? So many people here are saying how much they love it but as it’s not leak proof it doesn’t seem that much better than most other insulated cups.

It’s not leak proof but I don’t carry mind about with me so that’s not a factor for me. have one at work and one at home. Had them about 2 years so before they took off. Ice lasts about 12-15 hours in mine. I just too up with water as I need it.

So it’s good because it keeps it cold basically?
