To not get the Stanley Cup thing

They're 45 quid. It's a water bottle. I just don't get it.

I bought a water bottle from Tesco last year took it on a trip to Australia including the 40°C outback. My drinks stayed ice cold all day. Its the best bottle I've had and it cost me a tenner. There's no way I'd pay all that for a Stanley cup when I was really happy with a £10 bottle!

Ap24 · 27/03/2024 08:17

I've got a "fake" one. It's perfect for breastfeeding.

ThePoshUns · 27/03/2024 08:18

This thread is reminding me of this classic sketch from Smack the Pony

No, he was previously bringing me a normal glass and obviously being much smaller I was drinking less. The size that everyone is mocking is the whole point he bought it. Plus I was leaving a normal cup behind if I was moving around with my laptop, as I often go between the desk and kitchen table, but you don’t need a free hand to carry the Stanley cup, only a finger!

This. I previously had a chilli bottle, then a glass bottle with time markings on it, then a Starbucks cup with a straw - and it’s only since getting the Stanley I consistently drink it all. Partly the ease of carrying around, partly the size.

I probably could’ve shopped around and got a different brand with similar features cheaper but I didn’t need to.

yellowsmileyface · 27/03/2024 08:21

It's a status symbol.

A much cheaper water bottle would fulfil the same purpose if you presume the purpose is to stay hydrated, but that isn't really the purpose of the Stanley anymore.

Grown women aren't pushing each other out of the way at Black Friday sales because they're so eager to stay hydrated.

Influencers have been paid to push it as the latest "must have", to the point that young girls are actually being teased at school if they don't have a Stanley. I've also seen videos of girls, around 7 years old, shrieking and crying with happiness over getting one for Christmas. Imagine being 7 and being so elated to receive a water bottle for Christmas??

Sparklesocks · 27/03/2024 08:21

Neither do I. But it’s a trend, like anything else it’ll come and go. The older you get the more detached you seem to get from young people fads!

Comedycook · 27/03/2024 08:23

It's utterly bizarre. Was no one able to drink water prior to this?

Dramatic · 27/03/2024 08:27

I bought my teens one each for Christmas, they were only £12 from tiktok shop though, I wouldn't have paid £45 for them.

That makes more sense. Someone’s pointed out that it’s the Stanley screwdrivers etc company. I can’t believe they’ve never heard of the Stanley Cup.

So it’s others’ shorthand.

If it’s Stanley tools, presumably it’s a big, rugged water bottle. I’m not sure why a water bottle would need to be like that though, unless you can also bang nails in with it.

It's not the same company as the tool company. But they are yonks old, they always made flasks, like Thermos flasks.

The original flasks are pretty rigged but no, the new cups are not rugged.

There are about a million brands and types of cup that keep the drink cold, these just happen to have gone viral. I am also someone who forgets to drink, but actually despite the fact I have at least twenty water bottles and cups not much reminds me. I didn't have any water yesterday. A Stanley isn't going to change that.

Iloveeastereggs2020 · 27/03/2024 08:29

Mine is the best thing I’ve ever brought for my health and skin. I drink SO much more, I make sure I drink one with every meal. I used to go all day only drinking a cup of tea. You can of course get the same from a cheaper water bottle though..

Angrymum22 · 27/03/2024 08:34

It’s the metal straw that really puts me off. As a dentist I know how difficult it is to clean out aspirator tips at work which are glorified straws( they are all disposable). I think if I ever had one I would be autoclaving it daily.
Do they come with a thin bottle brush to clean them?

NeverNameChange · 27/03/2024 08:36

There's a couple of people on the thread comparing Stanley to Smiggle, is this true?? I just bought my DD a smiggle lunch box because I thought it was cute 😬i didn't know it was "a thing"....it was only £4

Rewis · 27/03/2024 08:39

It's like any other fashion trend. Something comes along and stays for a while and then the next thing comes. You can use any cup, but the same thing can be said about anything. I don't think there really is anything to get. There has been tons of "must get" items.

0001010001a2 · 27/03/2024 08:39

They are excellent quality, had mine for over a year now (before it was cool 😅)
Too embarrassed to use it out in public though!

CatMadam · 27/03/2024 08:39

I got myself one when I was suffering from morning sickness and drinking ice water with a straw was the only thing that made me feel better! The judgment and nastiness over… a water bottle… on this thread is absolutely wild, can’t believe adults actually act this way!

ThePoshUns · 27/03/2024 08:41

It's not the bottle that's benefiting your skin and your health. You could drink enough water out of a pint glass every day.

Same! The thirst is like no other! And you don't have to refill during the night

ShyTed · 27/03/2024 08:42

It’s a bit much.
For some reason a group pops up on my Facebook newsfeed and people collect them and display them. Like 20 or more! The company has definitely struck gold with going viral!
I bought a bottle on Amazon for about a tenner it does the same job!

I couldn't get further than £45 are they really THAT expensive? My god there Is no justification for a cup.

I can't/won't drink from straw or spout bottles for this reason. Also, they taste funny.

I like a one-hand opening bottle which keeps drinks cool or hot. There are plenty on the market. All dishwasher safe too.

Mnetcurious · 27/03/2024 08:44

Anyone going around with a Stanley cup just looks like a massive fashion victim imo. Cringe.

Begsthequestion · 27/03/2024 08:06

Side note - Any advice that starts with "Just..." is usually hokey and not worth the energy taken to express it.

And in this case, it definitely is. With ADHD it never works to say "just do it". We're not stupid and have already thought of that.

I use a big copper water bottle, as copper keeps the bacteria at bay.

Oh my god. This is perfect - you've literally put into words what I've failed to try and express... I have ADHD, when people say "just..." it drives me insane. It's not that simple. I forget to feed myself if I don't have a social cue or reminder. "Just eat when hungry/just have water when you're thirsty..." I don't even know when I'm thirsty or hungry for fucksake!

Thank you @Begsthequestion - I'm going to use your explanation more often.

WhatACluster · 27/03/2024 08:48

I was conned by my teenager for an air up bottle…All the kids at school have one 🤷‍♀️ I did find a discount code so paid around £25 for it with a few flavours.

I have a cheap Home Bargains water bottle does exactly the same as a Stanley 🤣

The hype around these is astounding

YES!!!! 🏒🥅

Although, I’m a Blackhawks fan, so the less said about this season the better.

I’m a Leafs fan, for my sins. Not followed much in recent years.

On the topic of the thread, I have Stanley food flasks because they’re good at what they do. I have generic stainless steel type water bottles for days out/long journeys as they’re good at what <they> do. I’d not buy one of the giant bottles because they just look so unwieldy and unnecessarily large.
