To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 10:58

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

£100pw is a lot less than uni students pay for their rooms, and they have food etc on top

Hell yes - anything under £140 a week is cheap for most student accomodation, and often over £180-£225 in purpose built student digs.

(DS only paid £110 a week for a terrible shared student house in his final year at Liverpool - it leaked, had erratic heating and black mould in several rooms. Absolutely revolting)

stargirl1701 · 23/03/2024 12:33

It's not very environmentally responsible, OP. A four minute shower is usually suggested by all the eco guides. Try a timer:

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/03/2024 12:35

Yanbu. I love a 15 minute shower, have one nearly every day. I can make it 10 minutes if I'm in a hurry Grin.

I think you are paying to plenty to your parents and they are being mean. I am in my 60s btw and have 2 young adult children and while I might charge them rent if they lived here, I wouldn't think of limiting their shower use if it's 15 minutes a day.

Behindthecurtains · 23/03/2024 12:36

Water suppliers provide free money saving devices

I was sent a free egg timer for the shower, it was for 3 minutes

I have used this

Everyone on here is insane. 15 minutes to shower per day is completely acceptable and £100/week board paid to the people who chose to bring you into the world is more than enough. I’m convinced mumsnet is full of the kind of parents who will be asking themselves in years to come why their children never visit them.

I agree. Can’t believe the op is getting timed by parents whilst in the shower. With three other kids, you’d think they would have more important things to be getting on with.

TheSandgroper · 23/03/2024 12:39

I have only looked at the first few posts but, in Western Australia, where water use is measured because it has to be, the recommendation is Three Minutes. You can get perfectly clean in that.

Fifteen minutes is a lot of water and not environmentally economical at all.

sleekcat · 23/03/2024 12:43

Maybe you could have fewer 15 min showers and 5 min ones on the other days?
I like long showers but I do get a bit stressed about the amount of water my family like using.

Viviennemary · 23/03/2024 12:48

There is absolutely no need for showers lasting 15 minutes. Ridiculous.

What, like trying to get them showered and out the door to school/college?

potato57 · 23/03/2024 12:54

You could be paying £2k a month and they'd probably still complain. My MIL complained about the same thing when SIL and her daughter were living with her, and they paid far more than £100 a week.

It's one of those I-do-things-differently-to-you petty living together things.

If you only had 1 min showers every 3 days she'd still be bringing it up about what you did in the past or going back to your old ways or how much money it cost then blah blah blah.

Even at 15 mins it's probably costing only a few pennies per shower. The average household water bill is under £2/day for everything, inc waste water.

Best thing to do to keep the peace is get a gym or swimming membership and shower there, especially if you have a cheap community centre nearby.

Differentstarts · 23/03/2024 12:54

Yanbu but I'm normally in the shower for about 20 minutes at a time. I dont understand how people are showering in 2 minutes you need to shampoo and condition your hair, have a mini concert, shave everywhere and actually wash your whole body

DustyLee123 · 23/03/2024 12:55

15 minutes of hot water per shower every day is too much.
And I’m one that still has a hot water tank, we were the only ones in our road showering in hot water when the gas went off, thanks to the immersion heater.

LakeTiticaca · 23/03/2024 12:56

15 minutes is more than adequate and 30 minutes is taking the piss
Get your own place and pay your own bills

If you pay 100 a week , you have more than paid to use the shower for 15 minutes.

Errr do you pay rent and bills, £400 doesn't touch the sides

RosesAndHellebores · 23/03/2024 12:58

On the face of it I can't see the issue. Not sure how long dd or I spend in the shower, possibly about 10 minutes. Get wet, 2 shampoos, conditioner, soap up, rinse off, possibly shave armpits and/or legs. Probably 6/7 minutes on non hair wash days.

Whilst it would cost more to live out independently, you aren't doing that, you are sharing your family home with 5 others. There needs to be give and take but I think £100 is about right if your parents need it. DD is still at home and I reckon it puts £50 on the shopping bill but I buy her the things she likes as treats. She pays £100pcm but has never been asked.

Applescruffle · 23/03/2024 12:59

Elephantswillnever · 23/03/2024 11:08

If you are living in their house you should follow their rules. Perhaps consider getting a gym membership. It’s £16 for students in my la and you could have endless showers if you wanted and give you an escape in the evening.

This is a great idea

LadyBird1973 · 23/03/2024 12:59

@BluebelllsRosesDaffodills well she's probably saved the family what it would cost to pay for childcare for 4 dc - not all dual income families can afford to cover that cost out of their earnings.
Logistically, it's undeniably easier for wohp and the dc if there's a sahp - no worrying about covering school holidays, when the kids are sick and childcare won't take them, no having to get to the nursery dead on the dot, so you don't incur late fees.
Family life is easier if there's a parent who can do the school runs, be there at homework time, be able to support the dc on a day to day basis without having the additional time constraints and stresses of balancing a job at the same time.
Such a goady question tbh - people's value doesn't exist purely in financial terms

25% of your pay for a roof over your head, all household bills including council tax and utilities, all food apart from weekday lunches, cleaning, laundry…? Bloody bargain.

Whether OP is there or not won’t affect council tax and rent will it? They’re not going to be using £100s more cleaning products because she’s leaving a trail of filth behind her. The roof over her head is her family home FFS

Of course I pay a mortgage and bills. I would pay them anyway whether a grown up offspring lived here or not. I wouldn't expect them to pay my bills.

Minymile · 23/03/2024 13:01

15 minutes is a long time for a shower everyday.
I suppose if you don’t like the rules and feel it’s unfair that you are the only one contributing and resent your mum staying at home then maybe it would be better for you to find your own place.
A room in a shared house maybe.
Youll find you won’t be able to pay rent and bills on £100 a week.

GalileoHumpkins · 23/03/2024 13:02

Jesus OP, if you're not showering (that includes washing hair, conditioner, head-to-toe exfoliation, shaving and foot scrub) in under a minute you'll be absolutely vilified here. It's always a competition to see who can shower in the least amount of time.

Yes, but a family home has family rules. If they were all taking 30 minute showers on a morning, it'd take three hours to get everyone through. And 3 hours with say, a 10KW Shower would be £7.50 in electricity a day for showering alone.

Did I miss op saying that she is taking too long whilst there is a queue?

EmilyPlay · 23/03/2024 11:03

If you pay 100 a week , you have more than paid to use the shower for 15 minutes.

100% this! My monthly energy bill is £250, plus £50 for water. There are seven of us here, so that includes washing and drying laundry, so I'm not sure how £400 per month isn't enough to cover OP's share of the those bills?

That said, @tryinghere do you actually leave the water running all the time you're in the shower? I can be in the shower for 15 minutes, but I turn the shower off in between soaping up, shaving, etc, to conserve water.

Garlicking · 23/03/2024 13:04

I don't think a 15 minute shower is too long, @tryinghere, and I don't think £100 is too much for your keep.

If there's a gym at your college, or a nearby sports facility with student discount, one compromise would be to have your long showers elsewhere. Otherwise, you could maybe offer a few extra quid for the hot water, but I don't think that's the real problem. You could try, though!
