To think for £100 a week to live at home I can have a shower every day?

I live at home, I work f/t and I'm doing an online course. I pay £100 a week contribution and I am moaned at for spending about 15 minutes a day in the shower.
Admittedly one day I was in there half an hour and accepted that I was in there a long time, I was asked to be more considerate and I did, but, I have reduced it to 15 minutes a day and that's still too long.
Apparently it's not necessary to be in there that long and the rest of the family make sacrifices and go without only showering every other day and using sink and flannel in between, I hate this.

My parents don't have a lot of money but they do have 4 children and my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.
As the oldest, I'm the only one paying my way and don't feel it's unreasonable to shower for 15 minutes a day.
I get my parents choose not to so they can save money but I pay them a lot.
Do I stand my ground on this one and shower away or is 15 minutes ott for £100 a week.

15 minutes for a shower? That is way too long.
What's taking so long?

tillytoodles1 · 23/03/2024 11:00

It only takes about 5 minutes to have a good wash in the shower. Are you washing your hair every day too?

Anameisaname · 23/03/2024 11:00

15 mins ! I struggle to wait 3 mins for hair conditioner as I'm pretty much in and out in 2 mins

yellowjumperoo · 23/03/2024 11:02

If you can't accept their rules..Move out and have the 30 min showers you want.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 23/03/2024 11:02

£100 a week is nothing if you think what it would cost to live in your own place.

Dryt · 23/03/2024 11:02

I lived with a 15-30 minute showerer, I don’t understand it at all, literally what do you do to take that long? It’s very expensive and annoying to not be able to get in the bathroom for that long every single day, often at peak times!

Sasqwatch · 23/03/2024 11:02

my mum chooses to stay at home meaning she chooses that we make sacrifices.

You sound horribly entitled OP.

KnackeredBack · 23/03/2024 11:03

Too long. There would be no hot water left in our boiler for anyone else if you were that long at my house. YABU.

Womblingmerrily · 23/03/2024 11:03

Take a look at what your £400 would get you in your local area - would it even pay for a room in a shared house?

Does that cover your share of the energy bills/council tax/water and sewage/food and household supplies?

If you would prefer to move out and pay your own way entirely then do so.

I suspect if you did the maths you would find out that your parents are still subsidising you to live at home and therefore they can limit the amount of resources you are using - especially if you using them is preventing others from doing so.

ManchesterBeatrice · 23/03/2024 11:03

What takes so long?

I can shower well and wash and condition hair in 5 mins!

EmilyPlay · 23/03/2024 11:03

If you pay 100 a week , you have more than paid to use the shower for 15 minutes.

KimberleyClark · 23/03/2024 11:05

15 minutes is a ridiculously long time to spend in the shower.

tryinghere · 23/03/2024 11:05

Okay, I didn't think it was excessive but I don't know how long people take on average.

sashagabadon · 23/03/2024 11:05

It’s a waste of water for a start, is v annoying for others waiting for you to finish plus makes the bathroom like a steam room unnecessarily which takes a while to air. 5 mins easily enough
just don’t do it or move out!

S72 · 23/03/2024 11:06

Is that the only bathroom in the property? Is there a separate toilet? Is there a hot water tank or unlimited hot water? Are you showering at peak times when the family need to get ready for work/school?

All things to consider.

If it bothers you that much, perhaps get a membership to a gym with decent showers instead, or look for your own place.

£400 doesn't go far with the cost of living these days.

ComeAlongPeggy · 23/03/2024 11:06

It is excessive. £100 per week is not much at all. As others have said, you would be hard pressed to live independently on £400 pm. 15 minutes is too long unless it’s your own house and you’re paying the bills.

Abstractthinking · 23/03/2024 11:06

Presumably you are living at home to save money?

You have a choice: follow by their rules (and everyone else seems to be have quick washes), move out or find the cost of 1 hour and 45 minutes of a hot shower and add on to the £100.

Whether your mum works is between her and your dad.

PickledPurplePickle · 23/03/2024 11:06

15 minutes in the shower is way too long

Presumably your £100 a week incudes everything, board, utilities, food, etc?

Luddite26 · 23/03/2024 11:06

15 minutes is far too long for a shower. Where is your thought for the environment?
You sound a bit entitled with your £100.
You wouldn't get much for that in the grown up world.
Try a house share if you think you deserve more.

Wastedagreatusername · 23/03/2024 11:07

Is £100 a week covering all bills and food? Your parents may be barely breaking even.

You are not paying a lot. You are getting an absolute bargain.

Hellogoodbyehello4321 · 23/03/2024 11:07

I'm not sure what leverage you have to 'stand your ground'? If your parents stand theirs, that presumably means they'd be asking you to leave and you'd find yourself needing to pay a lot more than 100 a week?

15 minutes is a lot - 30 minutes is crazy, did you fall down the plug hole? Try and compromise on 10.

TheIceQween · 23/03/2024 11:08

I personally think 15 mins for a good shower is t long enough. I spend about 30 minutes in the shower. Maybe you could offer to pay a little more in return for your longer shower? I’d definitely do that as I love my long hot steamy sessions 🚿

Elephantswillnever · 23/03/2024 11:08

If you are living in their house you should follow their rules. Perhaps consider getting a gym membership. It’s £16 for students in my la and you could have endless showers if you wanted and give you an escape in the evening.

SameSameButDeliverance · 23/03/2024 11:08

If I wash my hair, it takes me at least 15 mins or so in the shower - scalp scrub, two shampoos, conditioner and mask. My hair is knotty, frizzy mess without this. I do all the above twice a week, so I appreciate a 15 min shower is definitely possible.

Other showers are about 5 mins I guess.

Any compromise you can make OP?

Flatleak · 23/03/2024 11:08

Average length of a shower is 8 mins
